De Kock, Breetzke and Milne lead SEC to bonus-point victory

Half-centuries from Quinton de Kock (77) and Matthew Breetzke (52) set Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) up for a big finish, but they ended up with 188 rather than the 200-plus total they seemed on course for, with Tymal Mills and Lungi Ngidi conceding just 20 off the last three overs with their slower balls into the pitch. It proved a big enough total, however, as Pretoria Capitals (PC) faded away after a promising start, with Adam Milne wrecking their chase with figures of 4 for 25.The game was in the balance with Will Smeed well set and PC requiring 92 off the last 58 balls, with seven wickets in hand. But Senuran Muthusamy cleaned Smeed up with a left-arm spinner’s dream delivery, triggering a collapse of 3 for 14 that all but ended the contest. SEC eventually won by 48 runs, picking up a bonus point.Quinton de Kock gave SEC’s innings its early momentum•SA20

De Kock, Breetzke add 116

After Ngidi dismissed Jonny Bairstow in the second over, de Kock and Breetzke dominated for almost 12 overs. By the end of the powerplay, SEC had 64 runs on the board and had hit five sixes. Four of them had come off de Kock’s bat, one of which stood out for its grace. Off the second ball of the fourth over, de Kock leaned into a length delivery wide of off stump from Ngidi and effortlessly lofted it over mid-off.De Kock reached his fifty off 29 balls in the eighth over, even as Breetzke took his time at the other end. But from 25 off 20 at one stage, Breetzke thumped 27 off his next 13 balls to get to his half-century in 30 deliveries. By the time de Kock was stumped off Bryce Parsons in the 14th over for 77 off 47 balls, SEC looked set for a huge total.

PC limit the damage despite Hermann cameo

Jordan Hermann arrived when de Kock departed, and hit two boundaries off his first three balls. He started the 17th over with four and six off Wihan Lubbe, and was on 27 off 12 balls with three overs left. SEC were sitting pretty at 168 for 3, with an eye on 200. But Tristan Stubbs pulled Mills to deep backward square leg, and the changes of pace kept working for Mills and Ngidi. Hermann fell to Mills in the final over, for 37 off 20 balls.Adam Milne ripped through Capitals with four wickets•SA20

Milne trumps Hope and Smeed

PC were 49 for 1 five overs into their chase. Shai Hope had motored to 36 off 18 balls with five fours and a six, including three boundaries off Anrich Nortje in the fifth over. But just when PC had all the momentum, Milne’s back-of-the-hand slower ball landed on a yorker length and flattened Hope’s off stump.Lewis Gregory then had Dewald Brevis caught at wide long-on in the eighth over. Smeed, though, looked in control just over the halfway mark, only for Muthusamy to get him with a beauty. The ball drifted in and dipped onto a length on leg stump, and turned and bounced enough to hit the top of middle. Smeed departed for 35, and the others followed.Milne bowled Connor Esterhuizen off another slower ball in the 13th over, and a mix-up with Sherfane Rutherford resulted in Lubbe’s run-out. Milne got two more wickets – both in the 17th over – when he had Keshav Maharaj and Rutherford caught. With the match going out of PC’s hands with every passing wicket, Rutherford was their only hope for a miracle. But he only managed 25 off 19 balls, having been left with too much to do.

An Unfortunate Bi-Product Of The Beautiful Game?

Our beloved sport has endured a few body blows in recent months; we’ve had scandals, teams slip into administration and several tragedies both on and off the pitch. As a dedicated audience we relish the prospect of football evolving as both a physical activity and an entertainment spectacle, but has anyone stopped to truly consider the detrimental impact this could have on the players?

The intensity of English football currently resides at an unprecedented level with the physical hardship of each season matched only by the increasing amount of expectation placed upon such fragile shoulders. The football schedule is so congested that players are finding themselves constantly nursing niggling injuries even when they’re not confined to the sidelines.

The magnitude of this escalating strain is highlighted by the worrying increase in cardiac related fatalities. There were seven recorded deaths in total between 1970 and 1989, compared to 10 in the 1990s and an unparalleled 28 in the 2000s. Since the turn of the decade we’ve already lost 11 more individuals, with the recent passing of Piermario Morosini bringing Italian football and subsequently the world to a standstill.

There is still an air of confusion surrounding the death of Morosini, initial analysis suggests that the 25-year-old may have collapsed suddenly due to erratic electrical impulses in his heart. However, there is an underlining universal concern that perhaps not every possible aid is made available to athletes, competing not only in football but also in events throughout the world. In the wake of the tragedy, the Lega Pro chiefs have pledged to ensure that a defibrillator is on standby at the top 134 venues in Italy. This is a promising development but there are still numerous precautions yet to be implemented behind the scenes.

Mario Balotelli, a player who played with Morosini during their time with Italy’s Under-21 side, revealed to La Gazzetta dello Sport that in his experience there are things English authorities can learn from their Italian counterparts.

“New findings need to be acted on,” said Balotelli. “In England there are not the heart checks we have in Italy. It is better to take precautions.” (Goal.com)

If this is truly the case then new measures need to be introduced to ensure we’re doing everything in our power to identify any underlying issues at the earliest opportunity. Italy coincidently has a reputable history of discovering potential heart problems from an early age, as highlighted by none other than Portsmouth’s Nwankwo Kanu.

In 1996 when the Nigerian was at Inter Milan, tests found that he had a congenital heart defect and in November of that year he underwent surgery to replace an aortic valve. To this day the striker is still playing football and since 2000 has publicly continued to address the issue of heart problems in African children and adults, by setting up the Kanu Nwankwo Heart Foundation.

The main obstacle to overcome is finding a way to identify such conditions that display no physical symptoms. Perhaps until we make significant technological advancements in healthcare we simply have to accept this as poignant reoccurring theme within the game. However, we cannot sit idly by when there are still procedures we can promote to help increase the chances of discovering any possible problems.

Professor Sharma, Consultant Cardiologist at BMI The Blackheath Hospital and Cardiac Risk in the Young charity, as well as cardiologist for the London 2012 Olympics, supports the notion that practices like ECG’s should be encouraged amongst athletes across the professional spectrum.

“I’m not saying we should mandate ECGs or make them compulsory, but I think we should make the practice available to anyone who competes at a high level to have these tests done and, unfortunately, that’s not the case in most athletes in the UK,”

“I can tell you that from my own experience as the cardiologist for the largest cardiology charity organisation, Cardiac Risk in the Young, we pick up a serious fault in one in every 300 athletes we test with the ECGs.” (Goal.com)

The evidence is therefore clear and cannot be ignored as we prepare for a particularly intense summer of sport. I’ve developed a worrying fear that the emerging trend of player simulation and gamesmanship will create a ‘boy who cried wolf’ scenario whereby players, officials and crucially the emergency services will be unaware when a player is truly hurt or in danger. This could prove pivotal in those situations where every second counts.

Rangers must axe Borna Barisic

Gio van Bronckhorst’s Rangers are set to turn their attention away from Europe today as they return to Premiership action at Ibrox.

They beat Borussia Dortmund 6-4 on aggregate in the Europa League, after a 2-2 draw in Glasgow on Thursday night, and now come up against Motherwell.

The Gers are chasing Celtic at the top of the table and need to pick up all three points today to keep the pressure on their arch-rivals.

Time’s up

One player who must be ruthlessly axed from the starting XI for this match is left-back Borna Barisic after his poor displays against Dortmund.

He has been way off the mark required in Europe and that should result in him being dropped to the bench against Motherwell today. The Croatia international was hauled off at half-time on Thursday to make way for Leon Balogun, with Calvin Bassey moving to left-back, and that could be the change that takes place in the side ahead of kick-off at Ibrox.

Barisic recorded SofaScore ratings of 6.2 and 6.4 against the Bundesliga outfit, which suggests that he struggled badly in both games. Therefore, the 29-year-old dud, who was once dubbed “mind-boggling” by Richard Foster, has now been way off it in his last two outings and does not deserve to be in the starting XI on current form.

Bassey, meanwhile, managed a SofaScore rating of 7.3 in the second leg against Rangers as he played at both centre-back and left-back. His second-half showing at full-back, setting up James Tavernier’s second goal, suggests that he is in a better place, as it stands, to start ahead of his Croatian teammate against Motherwell.

However, this does not mean that all is lost for Barisic. He is currently enduring a bad patch of form but has proven that he knows what it takes to put in top-class performances in the Premiership. The defender has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.28 in the division this term.

This shows that he is capable of delivering excellent displays on a consistent basis, but he needs to be able to get himself back into a position where he is able to do that again. The Scottish Cup tie with Dundee FC next month could be a good opportunity for him to come back in and find his feet, for example.

For now, van Bronckhorst must ruthlessly axe him from the starting XI and go with Balogun and Bassey in the back four next to Tavernier and Connor Goldson.

Celtic: Kieran Devlin defends Daizen Maeda

Celtic journalist Kieran Devlin has expressed his surprise at the notion that January signing Daizen Maeda has started his Parkhead career ‘poorly’.

The lowdown

The Hoops signed the Japanese forward from Yokohama F Marinos on an initial loan last month, and in the summer, the move will be made permanent for a fee of £1.38m.

The 24-year-old has made nine appearances so far for the club, starting four Premiership games and both legs of the Europa Conference League play-off tie against Bodo/Glimt.

Maeda has netted four goals for the Hoops up to this point, including one on his debut against Hibernian.

The latest

On The Athletic’s matchday forum, a supporter said that their problem with Maeda was his ‘woeful’ first touch, arguing that the 24-year-old produced a ‘particularly poor’ performance against Dundee last Sunday.

Devlin mounted a strong defence of Maeda in response, suggesting that his ‘outstanding’ work off the ball was underappreciated.

The journalist replied: “Game of opinions and all that, but I think we must be watching a different sport! Thought he was decent on Sunday with a directness that had been badly missing from Celtic’s wingers in the games previously, especially how well he does in creating the second goal.

“His control isn’t great but neither is Giakoumakis or Abada’s, really, but they like Maeda have other good qualities. His linkup play has been good enough while off the ball he’s outstanding, both in his pressing and his movement to create chances for himself and teammates.

“I can’t wrap my head around the theory I’ve seen online that he’s started his Celtic career poorly – but as I say, what makes these discussions interesting is how we all think differently about football and Celtic!”

The verdict

Maeda’s goal return for Celtic so far is solid, but what do the rest of his performance numbers say?

He has missed three big chances, namely situations where he should reasonably have been expected to score (via SofaScore). He hasn’t offered much from a creative standpoint either, supplying only 0.2 key passes per 90 minutes, and he’s only winning 39% of his duels.

As for his control, he is averaging two unsuccessful first touches per 90 minutes (via WhoScored).

There is some room for improvement, but perhaps he’s almost suffering from the form of fellow J1 League arrivals Kyogo Furuhashi and Reo Hatate, both of whom have impressed so much in the early knockings at Celtic that they’re already being touted as future Premier League players.

More patience may be required with Maeda.

Journalist talks up Neves exit from Wolves

Wolves could potentially lose Ruben Neves to Barcelona following interest from the La Liga giants, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Neves a star man at Wolves

The 24-year-old wasn’t always at his best last season but he is enjoying an excellent 2021/22 campaign, running the midfield for Wolves alongside Joao Moutinho.

Neves, who was once the club’s most expensive signing of all-time, has scored three goals and registered one assist in 25 Premier League appearances this term.

He has been linked with a move to Barcelona in recent days, though, with a summer exit possibly on the cards.

The Latest: Journalist talks up Neves exit from Wolves

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones claimed that Neves could find the lure of playing for Barcelona too much to turn down at the end of the season.

The journalist stated: “There is definite interest from Barcelona in Ruben Neves and that’s a bit of a worry for Wolves because they know at some point the player is going to test himself at one of the elite clubs.

“They were confident he wouldn’t jump ship for Arsenal or Manchester United right now, but Barcelona? That’s different.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“388797″]

The Verdict: Hard to turn down Barcelona

Neves has been a loyal figure for Wolves since coming to the Black Country in 2017, but while it would be fantastic news to hear that he wants to stay for many more years, the prospect of him moving on from Molineux does not seem implausible.

At 24, the midfielder looks to be heading towards his prime footballing years, and he may believe that he is capable of starring for a Champions League club, rather than one on the fringes of Europa League qualification.

Playing for a club like Barcelona would be a dream for many players, and after five years of loyal service at Molineux, it would be hard to begrudge him a move there, even if the La Liga giants aren’t the force of old. Portuguese legends such as Luis Figo and Deco have worn the famous blue and red jersey and Neves could be eager to follow in their footsteps.

Raphinha could be axed for Norwich clash

Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills believes that Raphinha could be left of the Whites’ squad entirely for the Premier League clash with Norwich City this afternoon.

The Lowdown: Raphinha in a rut

The Brazilian has been a wonderful signing from Rennes, excelling over the past two seasons and standing out as one of Leeds’ best players.

Raphinha’s form has clearly dropped off in recent months, though, with only one goal and one assist since the turn of the year.

Not only that, but he has arguably cut a sulky figure as the Whites have been drawn further into the relegation mire, with a massive home clash against fellow strugglers Norwich coming up on Sunday.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Mills thinks Raphinha could be dropped

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills claimed that Raphinha could even be left out of the matchday squad at Elland Road, given his recent attitude. The 44-year-old fumed:

“With Raphinha, there was clearly one or two issues with him leading up to Marcelo Bielsa being relieved of his duties. He was taken off and then dropped for the Manchester United games.

“There has been murmurings all along he was looking for a move and there has obviously been a little bit of interest. Since Christmas, he hasn’t shown anywhere near the type of form that we’ve seen previously.

“Jesse Marsch will have to look at that. They are playing Norwich, it’s not a must-win but it is a must not-lose game, that’s for sure. Raphinha, even if he’s a little bit not quite at it, is he more likely to create and score? Possibly.

“Is it worth even taking him if he’s on the bench? His attitude hasn’t been the greatest. I know he came on and did well against Man United for 10 minutes. Sometimes players like that you might as well not bother taking him than putting him on the bench.

“It’s a difficult call for Jesse Marsch to make.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-37/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Still likely to start

While Mills makes a fair point in terms of Raphinha’s form, it would still be a huge surprise if the Brazilian wasn’t involved in some capacity today.

He is still someone with the ability to win a match on his own – he is comfortably Leeds’ top scorer in the league this season with nine goals – and a moment of magic could make all the difference against the bottom-placed Canaries.

That being said, a massive improvement is required from Raphinha, both in terms of quality and attitude, with another poor performance likely to attract further criticism, especially if the Whites fail to pick up three points this afternoon.

Celtic: Journalist reacts to Ben Doak move

‘Celtic should be gutted’ that they’re losing Ben Doak, journalist Kaustubh Pandey has said.

The lowdown

According to The Athletic’s James Pearce, Premier League giants Liverpool are ‘closing in’ on the signing of the 16-year-old. Celtic are apparently in line to receive only ‘minor compensation’ given that the player hadn’t signed a professional contract at Parkhead.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy-2/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Hoops have tried to persuade Doak to stay amid interest from a host of ‘top clubs’ by demonstrating that ‘a tangible first-team pathway’ exists, but the lure of working under Jurgen Klopp has proved to be too strong for the teenager.

The latest

Pandey, the editor-in-chief of Get Italian Football News, gave his reaction to the news after Pearce’s report was shared by his colleague Kieran Devlin, Celtic’s correspondent for The Athletic.

Pandey tweeted: “This is a fantastic move. Ben Doak has impressed me whenever he’s played this season and it again shows that Liverpool know they need to refresh a squad which will be ageing soon. Doak is an excellent signing, even though Celtic should be gutted.”

The verdict

If Doak goes on to realise his potential on Merseyside, perhaps Celtic will be left wondering what might have been. Regrettably, the same goes for Parkhead alumni Liam Morrison (snapped up by Bayern Munich in 2019) and Josh Adam (lured to Manchester City a year later).

The 16-year-old is a player who, in the words of Pearce, possesses a litany of exciting attributes such as his ‘incredible pace and directness’, and it says a lot that he has played in two Scottish Premiership matches already, having only turned 16 last November.

Celtic: Boli Bolingoli returns to Parkhead

Celtic outcast Boli Bolingoli has returned to the club after his loan move to Russian club FC Ufa collapsed, The Glasgow Evening Times report.

The Lowdown: Pictured holding shirt

It looked as if the Hoops finally managed to get the left-back off the books last month, with FC Ufa posting a picture on Twitter of Bolingoli holding up their shirt.

FC Ufa confirmed that an agreement had been reached between the two clubs over a loan move to the end of the season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Bolingoli, who the Hoops slammed for a ‘stupid’ health protocol breach in 2020, had made just two Premiership appearances under Ange Postecoglou this season.

The Latest: Glasgow return

As reported by The Glasgow Evening Times, Bolingoli had been training with FC Ufa in their Turkish winter training camp for the last month.

However, the Russian side were unable to secure a work visa for the defender due to diplomatic relations between the UK and Russia. As a result, Bolingoli will have to return to Celtic, with the Hoops once again stuck looking to offload the 26-year-old.

The Verdict: Ange’s awful international break continues

Postecoglou hasn’t had the best of starts to the international break with concerns over both Daizen Maeda and Tom Rogic, so this update on Bolingoli just adds to his woes.

Celtic already have Vasilis Barkas surplus to requirements at Parkhead, with the Greek goalkeeper ‘demanding’ to leave the club.

The Hoops are now stuck with having to deal with Bolingoli once again, as he prepares to enter the final 12 months of his Celtic contract in the summer, potentially even reaching the point where he will prefer to let his deal run down so he can demand more wages elsewhere as a free agent.

Newcastle keen on Alessandro Romagnoli

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in AC Milan machine Alessio Romagnoli.

What’s the talk?

According to Tutto Mercato, the Magpies are one of the teams plotting a move for the Italian central defender ahead of the summer transfer window.

The report claims that Lazio, Juventus and Sevilla are also keen on the 26-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the campaign, although Milan are said to be holding out hope that they can pin him down to an extension.

Imagine him & Burn

PIF must ensure that they can seal a deal to sign Romagnoli on a free transfer as he would be a fantastic addition to Eddie Howe’s squad and would be able to form a strong partnership with Dan Burn at the back.

The Italian defender has been in fine form for the Rossoneri this season and has led the Serie A giants to the top of the table after 30 games. In the league, he has averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.08 across 18 appearances as he has consistently delivered quality performances.

Whilst completing 89% of his attempted passes this term, he has also averaged 2.4 tackles and interceptions and won an impressive 68% of his individual duels. Romagnoli is a strong defender who can read the game and he has been showcasing his ability throughout the current campaign.

Milan legend Paolo Maldini previously hailed the gem, saying: “He is one of the best ever, he is already at the national team. He must have well precise objectives. It’s a growth process. Milan of the last few years did not help Alessio but we now hope that he will help us return Milan back.”

Romagnoli has played 246 Serie A matches throughout his career and this shows that he has the experience to go along with his impressive performances and praise from Maldini. He has consistently delivered over a number of years and is, therefore, not a one-hit-wonder who is having a flash in the pan.

Burn has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.03 in the Premier League this term, winning 57% of his duels and making 3.1 tackles and interceptions per game. He has proven himself to be a reliable player in the top-flight for the Toon and that is why the Magpies can form a strong partnership by signing Romagnoli to partner with the ex-Brighton man.

Both players are strong performers at the top level and, therefore, can provide a solid base upon which Howe can build the rest of his Newcastle team.

Celtic in talks for Carter-Vickers deal

Celtic are in talks concerning a deal to bring Cameron Carter-Vickers to Parkhead on a permanent basis.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Sky Sports, who claim that Ange Postecoglou’s side have now started negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur regarding the centre-back’s full-time switch to Glasgow – with Celtic possessing a £6m option to buy clause for the defender.

The report goes on to state that the discussions between the two clubs concern the structure of this £6m fee, rather than the overall price of the transfer – as it is understood that there is no wiggle-room over the total cost for the USA international.

An update Celtic supporters will love

With Carter-Vickers having gone on to establish himself as a key part of Postecoglou’s first-team side this season, the claim that Celtic are now in talks to secure the permanent signing of the 24-year-old is sure to be an update the Parkhead faithful love.

Indeed, over his 26 Premiership outings this term, the £2.7m-rated centre-back has been in imperious form in the heart of the Celtic backline, helping his side keep 14 clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.2 interceptions, 0.9 tackles, 4.2 clearances and winning 5.9 duels – at a success rate of 68% – per game.

The £22k-per-week defender has also impressed going forwards, scoring three goals and providing his teammates with one assist, in addition to taking an average of 0.5 shots and making 0.3 key passes per fixture.

These metrics have seen the player who Keith Costigan dubbed a “monster” average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.35, ranking him as the fifth-best player in the top flight of Scottish football.

As such, should Celtic go on to seal a deal for the American sensation this summer, it would undoubtedly come as a huge boost to Postecoglou and his side, as Carter-Vickers could well prove to be the rock that the Hoops’ defence is built upon for many a year to come.
