Sheffield United: Oliver McBurnie withdraws from Scotland squad through injury

Sheffield United have been dealt a blow before the season starts as one of their key players has picked up an injury, which could prompt Chris Wilder to seek a replacement in the transfer window.

According to Yorkshire Live, Oliver McBurnie has withdrawn from the Scotland squad after he incurred an injury.

The extent of the injury remains unknown and Blades fans will have to wait and see what Wilder says about it whenever he next speaks to the media.

The Yorkshire Post reported that an extra option at centre-forward could be particularly welcome in the short term following the setback to McBurnie just days before the start of the 2020/21 Premier League.

Everyone associated with Sheffield United will be hoping that the injury is not too serious as McBurnie was their joint-top scorer last season alongside Lys Mousset, and also averaged 1.2 shots per game, via WhoScored. He is the third most expensive signing in the Blades’ history after his arrival from Swansea City last summer for £17.19m, per Transfermarkt.

Thhat the 23 year-old is being selected for Scotland highlights that his performances under Wilder have not gone unnoticed, although the Blades definitely don’t need to think about finding a replacement in the transfer window, but rather someone who can cover temporarily. It is worth wondering whether someone currently in the squad can come in to replace him and it would most likely be super-sub Mousset, who scored the most goals as a substitute in the Premier League last season.

He should therefore be the ideal replacement to cover for the injured McBurnie, and so Wilder should not feel like he has to rush into signing a new striker to compensate for the Scot’s injury.

Blades fans, can Mousset step up in the absence of McBurnie? Let us know your views in the comments below!

Are Manchester United ready for Premier League title run next season?

Manchester United have shown encouraging signs that their Premier League title drought could well end in the next campaign due to the resurgence of their attacking flair. The Red Devils have been derided over the past seven years following their fall from grace since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, and Jose Mourinho all failed to return the club to the Premier League summit.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put faith in his young players to push United back into contention for a Champions League, and they have delivered. The uncertainty of Manchester City’s future in Europe’s elite competition has opened up a pathway for the Red Devils to capitalise on their rivals’ misfortune.

It would be the perfect springboard for Solskjaer’s men to launch an assault on the Premier League crown. Liverpool and City are not going anywhere soon, but the recent performances of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Mason Greenwood, along with new signing Bruno Fernandes suggest that United could have a strikeforce to match the potency of the Reds and Pep Guardiola’s side.

Despite their lack of relative success, the club remains one of the most popular in the world, especially in the United States, according to research by Statista. With a return to relevance, United will no doubt be a popular bet in markets to win the title in the 2020/21 Premier League season due to their strong and loyal following across the globe.

It will be worth monitoring the best football betting websites to find optimum value. They’re unlikely to be ahead of Liverpool and City, but their performances could edge them ahead of another side whose rebuild looks very encouraging – Chelsea. Shopping around for the top value or offers could pay dividends for those supporters who wish to back Solskjaer’s men – and there are plenty of reasons for them to.

Firing Frontline

Outside of Rashford, United were struggling to fire under Solskjaer in the opening six months of the current campaign. There was no creative outlet to allow the Red Devils to flourish in the final third, especially after Paul Pogba was ruled out of action for a long period of the term, only returning in June. All eyes were on United to make a splash in the transfer market to spark the team into life.

Fernandes has performed above all expectations since arriving from Sporting CP. The 25-year-old has been the architect of United’s renaissance, bringing out the best in Rashford, Greenwood, and Martial. Even Pogba appears to be more relaxed in his approach – with the burden of carrying the fortunes of the team in the middle of the park been eased by the Portuguese.

Martial’s resurgence has been particularly noteworthy, blossoming into the number nine that Mourinho did not believe could flourish as United’s spearhead. Both the Frenchman and Rashford are approaching 20 goals apiece for the campaign in the league. That is the level that can allow United to compete with the forward lines of Liverpool and City. Add Greenwood into the mix – with the potential to be even better than his team-mates, and it could be a trifecta that sees the Premier League crown return to Old Trafford after an eight-year wait.

Depth Issues

United remain one injury away from a world of trouble. Their starting line-up is good enough to match up with their potential rivals, but their levels of depth in the squad are not. Their cause has not been aided by the impending departure of the promising Angel Gomes, while Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard’s days as contributors appear to be numbered. Should Fernandes suffer an injury, then the club are back to square one.

There’s no Phil Foden emerging through the ranks in the middle of the park to fill the creative void. A player like Jack Grealish would be a welcome addition to provide that additional layer of depth to ensure that Solskjaer and his team can compete on four fronts without having to adapt their system. That issue is also prevalent within the three-man strikeforce. The club will want to keep Rashford, Martial and Greenwood fit and firing throughout the term. Liverpool have successfully managed the fitness of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Mohamed Salah without losing one of their trio for a significant period of time.

United could have the same fortune, although the presence of a forward of the ilk of Odion Ighalo is useful. If the club can secure his services on a permanent basis, he could be a solid depth option. Wissam Ben Yedder is also another reported target and adding a veteran presence would be a wise idea, which could even lead to the prospect of Edinson Cavani. However, they will not want to disrupt the harmony and development of their forwards – therefore any move must come with the caveat of not denying Rashford, Greenwood, and Martial the starting roles.

Manchester United: Red Devils consider four Jadon Sancho alternatives

Manchester United always knew that signing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund was never going to be an easy task.

While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer maintains that Sancho remains his top target this summer, the Red Devils have drafted a list of alternatives should they fail in their attempts to bring him to Old Trafford.

Dortmund director Michael Zorc’s recent comments will not have gone down well with Ed Woodward and Matt Judge.

Man United are firmly focused on signing Sancho but the Bundesliga outfit have insisted the 11-cap England international is staying at the Signal Iduna Park for at least another season.

According to The Manchester Evening News, United are considering Kingsley Coman, Rabbi Matondo and Thiago Almada, while ESPN revealed Barcelona flop Ousmane Dembele is also on the shortlist.

Whether or not this is simply part of the poker game, only time will tell, but it is telling that the Red Devils are ready to look at other options.

Dembele seems to be the odd one out as the 23-year-old has not managed to play a competitive game all year.

He has struggled for consistency since his £135m move from the Bundesliga to La Liga because his career has been plagued by persistent injuries.

Spanish newspaper Sport insists Barca will allow him to leave on loan as long as there is a mandatory option to buy included in the deal. However, the Red Devils harbour concerns over his injury history and view the Frenchman as a risky investment.

Meanwhile, United continue to be linked to Coman, Matondo and Almada as well.

Coman has incredibly won a league title in each of his seasons as a professional footballer so far, which sets him apart from the rest of his rivals.

Despite his young age, the 24-year-old has already played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including the likes of Bayern Munich, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, which makes him a valuable backup option if the board are unable to sign Sancho in the summer.

It is understood that Matondo is viewed in the same bracket as his Welsh teammate Daniel James, and although he would be a much cheaper option than the Englishman, he would not be expected to start every game on the right wing.

While he would make a great addition to cope with the congestion of fixtures United will have to deal with next season, he doesn’t have the experience behind him to push for a place in the starting lineup.

Velez Sarsfeld forward Thiago Almada faces the same issues as his Schalke counterpart.

With that being said, this could simply be a ploy by the board to break the deadlock with Dortmund.

The Sancho saga has shown no signs of going away anytime soon, so there are bound to be plenty of twists and turns in the tale still to come.

United fans, do you think Ed Woodward will sign Sancho this summer? Let us know your views in the comments below!

Sunderland: Michael Gray launches scathing attack on Stewart Donald

Former Sunderland defender Michael Gray has issued a scathing attack on the club’s owner Stewart Donald.

The Black Cats failed to gain promotion to the Championship this year, finishing eighth in what was a curtailed League One campaign.

Failure to get themselves prompted sees the Wearsiders remain in England’s third tier for a third consecutive season and the pressure will firmly be on manager Phil Parkinson to deliver the goods next term.

Owner Stewart Donald, who took over the club in April 2018 from former owner Ellis Short, has received much criticism during his time in charge and his reign is now being heavily questioned.

More than 18 months into his tenure as the club’s owner, the wealthy businessman made clear his intentions to find a new buyer for the club, and former Black Cats player Gray has now given his thoughts.

Tweeting his opinion via social media platform Twitter, former defender Gray said:

Gray’s comments come after a recent club decision to not issue a refund to Sunderland season ticket holders until August.

Gray’s message is quite clear and, as someone who played a part in Sunderland being promoted to (and thriving in) the Premier League in the late 1990s and early 2000s, his words are likely to resonate with the Wearside faithful.

The message is simple and it is that Donald must leave….

What do you make of Gray’s comments? Should Donald sell the club now? Let us know in the comments section below…

Southampton reportedly line up puzzling Rogerio bid

[ad_pod ]

Southampton are reportedly eyeing a move for Juventus defender Rogerio, per The Mirror’s live transfer blog (January 24, 6:59pm).

The Saints and Wolves are both said to be interested in signing the left-back, who is currently on loan at Sassuolo, with a £12million asking price mooted.

What’s the word?

Rogerio has been capped at Under-17 and Under-20 level by Brazil but has yet to make his breakthrough into the first-team at Juve.

Indeed, the Brazilian spent last season on loan at Sassuolo too, and he also attracted interest from Newcastle United prior to their move for Jordan Lukaku, per Sky Sports.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has yet to dip into the transfer market in January, instead choosing to trim his squad, with depratures including Manolo Gabbiadini to Sampdoria and Wesley Hoedt to Celta Vigo.

It remains to be seen, however, if that will change with the arrival of Rogerio, with Wolves also reportedly watching developments.

Nonsensical link

This all makes very little sense.

Southampton are blessed with depth at left-back; Ryan Bertrand and Matthew Targett are already both vying for the spot on the left-hand side, while youngsters Kayne Ramsay, Yan Valery and Tyreke Johnson could all fill in there too if needed. The trio have shown in their first-team outings already that they have the ability to play if Hasenhuttl requires them to.

Bringing Rogerio in, then, goes against Saints’ strategy of bringing through their young players and there appears very little logic in adding a third senior left-back to the squad.

Southampton would do well to bow out if they are indeed tracking the Brazilian and let Wolves have a free run at him.

Quite simply, he isn’t needed at St Mary’s.

Man Utd confirm arrival of Gary O'Driscoll from Arsenal amid injury crisis that has left Erik ten Hag without nine players including summer signings Sofyan Amrabat & Mason Mount

United have said on the club's : “O’Driscoll is one of the most experienced and respected leaders in sports medicine, having served as chairman of the Premier League Doctors’ Group and a member of the FA Medical Committee. Before joining Arsenal, he spent six years as team doctor for the Ireland Rugby Union team, and performed the same role for the British and Irish Lions rugby team during two tours to New Zealand and South Africa. Gio Reyna and Gregg Berhalter buried the hatchet – but what can the USMNT boss really expect from the injury-prone Borussia Dortmund playmaker?

The coach and player have had their meeting, but there's still a lot of work to be done to rebuild the playmaker physically and mentally

Gio Reyna is back. Well, almost back at least. It's been a while since we've seen the United States men's national team star making things happen for club or country, but as the calendar turns towards October, it appears that Reyna is nearly ready.

First up will be Borussia Dortmund duty, as the German club has some big early-season games coming up. Hoffenheim, who sit one place above Dortmund in the Bundesliga table in the early stages of the season, are next up on Friday, before a marquee Champions League clash with Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah and AC Milan five days later. That will come amid a week that has seen Reyna linked to the Serie A giants, adding further intrigue to a Group-of-Death match that needs little more.

Coming soon, though, is the big moment: the USMNT reunion. The U.S. has massive matches coming up, friendlies against Germany and Ghana that should provide big tests. All eyes, though, will be on Reyna, who for the first time since everything went down following the 2022 World Cup, will be reunited with national team boss Gregg Berhalter.

The big question is what that looks like going forward. The two have spoken but, heading towards U.S. camp, what condition is Reyna in, both physically and mentally? Having dealt with some setbacks on and off the field this year, what can Reyna do over the next few months to make sure he ends 2023 on a high?

GettyNearing a return

It's been about three months since we last saw Reyna on the field. That came in the CONCACAF Nations League, when he helped lift the U.S. to a trophy with his fantastic play from a new midfield position.

A foot injury suffered during that pursuit, though, derailed the start of the season. He missed Dortmund's tour of the U.S. and the start of the Bundesliga season. The good news is that he's almost ready to return.

Reyna has been on the bench for each of Dortmund's last two matches, one in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain and one in the league against Wolfsburg. He hasn't yet stepped foot on the field, but it seems that moment is coming. He's nearing a long-awaited return.

AdvertisementGetty/GOALThe Berhalter situation

While his return on the club level will be a welcome sight for Dortmund fans, those that support the USMNT will be eagerly awaiting Reyna's next call-up. Part of that is due to what he can do on the field, as Reyna seems tailor-made for the new role he played in the Nations League. The other part? Pure intrigue. What in the world will all of this look like under Berhalter?

We all know the story by now. Blackmail, meddling, betrayal… a big old mess. The moment that Berhalter was rehired, the big question became how, and when, he'd patch things up with Reyna.

Unfortunately, that moment didn't come during Berhalter's first camp in September. Reyna missed the matches against Oman and Uzbekistan due to his injury, delaying the reunion. At that point, though, Berhalter said he'd yet to sit down with Reyna and have the inevitable clearing-of-the-air required for the two to work together.

"Those are conversations that I look forward to and it's just understanding sensitivities around it," Berhalter said ahead of September camp. "He's a young player. I think for everyone involved, it's been a lot for the last six months and we just want to do it in the best possible way to put him in position to help the team in a way that we know he can. Unfortunately, he was ruled out for this camp, but I look forward to continuing to monitor his progress at Dortmund and hopefully getting him back into camp in October."

Ahead of that October camp, that conversation has now happened, and that's important news for the USMNT.

Getty ImagesA vital meeting

Details are scarce about the meeting that has occurred, but U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker confirmed to reporters that both Reyna and Berhalter have had a productive conversation.

"I think both Greg and Gio are in a good place to move forward," Crocker said. "Clearly there's been a lot of emotions over the last 12 months. The common connection is they both want the program to be successful and that's the starting point and there's a clear way forward, a professional way of working and they're both ready."

That conversation was the first step, and it's likely the first of many. Fixing what was broken will take time and trust. It will be the biggest challenge of Berhalter's tenure, for sure.

It all begins in October, and the hope is that Reyna will be fit enough to contribute during his first camp back involved. "Gio's looking forward to the next camp, as soon as he's fit," Crocker said, "and Gregg's looking forward to working with him."

Role going forward

While Berhalter was gone, Anthony Hudson and B.J. Callaghan offered a glimpse into what life could look like this cycle for Reyna. Having been played primarily on the wing throughout Berhalter's first tenure, Reyna was shifted to a central position during his absence, playing a big part from that role. His assist for Folarin Balogun's first USMNT goal was sublime, showing what he can do to create in that position.

Now, we'll have to find out if he's convinced Berhalter of that, as playing Reyna centrally would require a massive shift for the USMNT. It would require one of Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie or Yunus Musah to be benched, which would be a massive call considering that group's success. Considering Adams' own injury issues, though, maybe this window is the perfect chance to give that a look and offer the new Bournemouth midfielder a chance to grow at his new club.

It'll be a storyline to watch going forward, and one that may never give us a definitive answer. Reyna's role could be entirely situational, one based on opponent, his team-mates and, most importantly, his health.

'A lot of things can happen' – USMNT star Christian Pulisic on uncertain Chelsea future, return to the USMNT & how he's navigating career-defining summer

The U.S. men's national team winger spoke to reporters about numerous topics as he faces what could be a career-defining transfer season.

It's going to be a career-defining summer for Christian Pulisic. As the transfer rumors continue to swirl, linking him to seemingly every top country in European soccer, the American star has arrived at national team camp, a place that has long been one where he can escape whatever disfunction he's experiencing at club level.

For years, the U.S. men's national team has been Pulisic's home away from home, his chance to reset, refocus and, most importantly sometimes, play a big role on the field and off of it for his country.

However, as he joins the U.S. for the upcoming Nations League semifinal against Mexico, there's really no escaping the shadow of this summer. His Chelsea future is uncertain, to put it lightly, and everyone from the U.S. to England is wondering and projecting where he'll play his club soccer next season. His decision, whatever it may be, will have lasting ramifications as the 24 year old gears up to be the face of the USMNT once again for the 2026 World Cup on home soil.

Speaking to media on Monday, Pulisic didn't provide any answers, and it's likely because he doesn't have them – at least not yet. With a difficult Chelsea season now in the rearview mirror, Pulisic is now fully focused on the USMNT.

With the national team, Pulisic will have a chance to lift a trophy in the coming weeks to begin the summer on a high. It comes, once again, as a welcome change for Pulisic, who admitted that things haven't quite gone to plan at Chelsea as a potential move looks more and more likely.

Getty Images'Right now, I'm a Chelsea player'

The rumors have swirled dating back to January, when an untimely injury ended any hopes of a move away from Stamford Bridge. But, with Mauricio Pochettino incoming and with a seemingly endless squad of players all fighting for playing time, it seems the time may be now for Pulisic to find a new home.

He's been linked with some massive clubs, with Manchester United, Newcastle, AC Milan, Juventus, Napoli and Atletico Madrid reportedly among his suitors. Reports say Pulisic will even be willing to take a pay cut to facilitate a move to a club that will be more willing to give him the playing time he needs.

For now, though, Pulisic remains a Chelsea player, and he says he isn't looking too far ahead of that at the moment.

"It's been an interesting journey at club level for me," he said. "I thought it was a great couple of years, and the last couple of years just haven't gone at all how I planned it to be. Right now, my focus is obviously here with the national team. And like I've said before, I'm just excited to just to get back playing and just enjoy myself and do what I love to do out on the field.

"From there, this summer, we are obviously going see what happens. It's obviously very early. As of right now, I'm a Chelsea player and I'm planning to go back but a lot of things can happen and a lot of things can change."

AdvertisementGettyApproaching the summer

Even if he considers himself a Chelsea player, Pulisic is aware of the speculation. Even if he won't talk about what's happening behind the scenes he does know that, at least externally, there is a lot of doubt about his Chelsea future.

Pulisic was asked if the last Chelsea game of the season could just be the last Chelsea game of his career, and he says he'll deal with that thought process when the time comes.

"It's a tough one," he said. "Like I said, right now, it's really in the back of my head. I'm not even thinking about it per se right now, like 'Where do I want to be next season?' or whatever. Right now, I'm focused on the national team. I want to be here, I want to win games. That's my sole focus right now.

"When the time comes, obviously, I need to also rest after this game a bit, get away from the game a bit and enjoy my breaks and my family, all those kinds of things, and then, once it's time to make decisions and then see what options I have, then I'll deal with it then."

Despite all of the rumblings about his future, though, Pulisic says that he's in a fairly good place. The USMNT camp presents a chance to spend time with some friends, including Matt Turner, who chimed in that he was excited to spend time with the winger.

He's also made sure to stay off of the internet for some time, avoiding as much external chatter as he can about his own career.

"I don't keep any social media on my phone anymore, so I probably don't see as much as you guys think I do," he says. "I don't know what's going on, like people will text me sometimes like 'You're going here?' and I'll be like, 'I don't even know that!', so they know more than me a lot of the times.

"But I'm a good, man. My family is healthy. I'm blessed. I'm having a really nice and I'm happy to be here with the boys, with Matty. I'm doing great."

(C)Getty Images'It's been tough to enjoy the game'

While Pulisic didn't have many answers about the future, he was willing to admit he hasn't been very happy with the immediate past.

It was a tough season for everyone at Chelsea, with the club going through three managers en route to a 12th-place finish. It was particularly tough for Pulisic, though, who, due to injuries and managerial decisions, played just over 800 Premier League minutes this season.

This campaign served as just the latest difficult moment at Stamford Bridge for Pulisic, whose career at Chelsea has had peaks and troughs, to say the least. A return to the national team, once again, gives him a chance to escape that up-and-down cycle for a little while.

"It's been a really tough season, for me personally and for our team, of course, at a club level," Pulisic said. "So for me, it's just about coming in here and having a fresh start and being able to be a part of a team that, hopefully, can come out and win some games. I'm really excited to be here and just to get some minutes on the field and just get back to being that confident player that I that I know I can be and just find my footing again and just enjoying the game because it feels like it's been tough to do that."

Getty ImagesUSMNT's coaching shakeup

The USMNT Pulisic returns to is a new-look one. Everyone knew that Anthony Hudson's tenure would come to an end sooner or later, but even Pulisic was stunned to see it end so soon.

"It's all come as a bit of a surprise for us, some of the changes, just as much as it is for you," he said, "so we're dealing with it as best we can."

Hudson departed the U.S. ahead of a busy summer as he decided to take a new opportunity in the Middle East. As a result, the baton will pass to B. J. Callaghan to lead the team into the Nations League and Gold Cup before a permanent hire is made.

Callaghan has been an assistant with the U.S. since 2019, and Pulisic has been familiar with him since his youth days in Pennsylvania. In theory, little should change for the U.S. until a new coach is hired.

"We've spoken and given our input as much as we can," he said of the coaching search. "It's not our job as players to appoint a manager or whatever the deal is. We're just here to come out and perform as best we can, no matter who the coaches are. We're excited to be here and represent the crest. That's how we look at it."

Pulisic has previously said that he believes Gregg Berhalter should remain a candidate to stay on and, when asked if he still believes that the now-ex-USMNT boss could be brought back, the American winger said he does.

"I think he should be considered," he said. "I think he did a great job with the team. He's brought us a long way. A lot of guys in the team especially would agree with that."

Pernille Harder, what a player! Winners and losers as Chelsea supersub changes the game in Women's FA Cup final triumph over Man Utd

The Dane came off the bench to set up Sam Kerr for the Blues' winning goal at Wembley on Sunday, giving them a third Women's FA Cup title in a row

Sam Kerr was once again the match-winner at Wembley on Sunday as the Chelsea star scored the only goal to defeat Manchester United in the Women's FA Cup final. It was a goal set-up for her by Pernille Harder, who changed the game for the Blues from the bench and could've been on the scoresheet herself moments earlier.

But this was a final as tight as the 1-0 scoreline suggested, with United having plenty of chances before the deadlock was broken.

GOAL breaks down the winners and losers from Wembley…

When Harder came off the bench just before the hour mark, it felt like a substitute that could change the game. It was indeed.

Within minutes, she almost scored from her first touches of the ball, and soon after that she set up the game's first goal, playing a perfect pass across the box for Kerr to finish.

The Dane's contract expires this summer and all signs point to her leaving the club, with Bayern Munich having been recently linked with signing her. This, then, was a memorable contribution to add to her successful spell in London.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLOSER: Leah Galton

Another star of United's excellent season, Galton thought she'd opened the scoring in the first few seconds on Sunday, but was to be denied by the offside flag.

A huge chance would come her way again in the first half, United's biggest of the game, but she could not convert Alessia Russo's cross from close range.

The one that fell to her in the dying moments was more difficult, as Ann-Katrin Berger spilled a cross at her feet, but there's no doubt she'll be thinking about that one before the break for a while. It could've changed the entire day had she buried it.

GettyWINNER: Sam Kerr

The Queen of Wembley. That should be Kerr's official title at this point.

Ahead of this game, she expressed her love for the iconic venue, one fuelled by her success at it. "I’ve never been there and not won a trophy," she said. "Fingers crossed this weekend is the same."

Thanks to her strike, it was. This was Kerr's fourth trip to Wembley and it brought with it her fifth goal and her fourth trophy. The Chelsea star is the woman for the biggest occasion and she continues to prove that time and time again.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Marc Skinner

United head coach Skinner has done some excellent things this season. After all, it's he and his team that sit top of the Women's Super League.

But his substitutions on Sunday raised plenty of eyebrows. Nikita Parris was her team's stand-out player but would barely make it past the hour mark as Rachel Williams came on in her place. She didn't complete a pass in the final third in her 30 minutes on the pitch.

With just over 10 minutes to go, he then opted to replace Ella Toone with Aoife Mannion. The England international had been one of United's most creative players and, ticking into the final stages, felt like someone who could create something. It was another one that was questionable, as was the decision to wait until stoppage time to bring on centre forward Martha Thomas.

That Emma Hayes brought on Harder with such perfect timing was quite the contrast, though United are not at the stage yet of having the luxury of a world-class talent like that among their subs.

Rating Liverpool's season so far: Darwin's development, Fabinho's struggles and Salah keeps on scoring

The Reds have endured a difficult start to the campaign, but brighter days lie ahead…

A season which promised everything has so far turned out to be a fairly mixed bag, as far as Liverpool are concerned.

As the Premier League breaks for the World Cup, the Reds sit sixth in the Premier League table, 15 points off top spot and facing a battle even to finish in the top four.

So consistent and so reliable for so long, Jurgen Klopp’s side have been anything but so far. They may have secured qualification for the Champions League last 16 with some comfort, but domestically theirs has been a campaign of disappointment, with moments of promise overshadowed by a series of underwhelming performances and morale-sapping defeats.

Already, they have lost twice as many league matches (four) than in the whole of last season, but the recent trend, at least, is upward, with a first away win of the campaign at Tottenham followed up by a 3-1 victory against Southampton on Saturday.

The expectation is that they will improve after the World Cup, when key players should return from injury and when they have traditionally come on strong in recent years, but the fact that the idea of a title challenge at Anfield already feels like it is off the table tells you just how much they will need to.

Here, GOAL takes a look at the first three-and-a-half months of 2022-23…

Getty Images`Best player

It was Luis Diaz who carried the fight in the opening weeks of the season, the Colombian showing the kind of energy, skill and determination that so many of his colleagues were lacking. He departed injured against Arsenal last month, but should be back by the time the league resumes on Boxing Day.

In Diaz’s absence, Mohamed Salah has been the man to step up to the plate. The Egyptian is on 14 goals for the season, including seven in the Champions League, two at Tottenham and the all-important winner against Manchester City. Where would Liverpool be without their Egyptian superstar?

Considering they’ve had a 9-0 win and a 7-1 win, it says a lot that the victory over Manchester City at Anfield in October takes this by some distance.

Liverpool arrived into that game low, having been beaten at Arsenal the previous week, but the sight of Pep Guardiola, Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne and Co. seemed to stir something in Klopp’s men.

They delivered a display of immense concentration, defensive solidity, teamwork and counter-attacking quality to hand the champions their first loss of the season.

Another award for Salah, whose winner against Manchester City was a masterpiece, showcasing all of his unique talent.

Reading the flight of Alisson’s long pass was one thing, but to ease Joao Cancelo out of the way while simultaneously bringing the ball under his spell, and then to show the speed and composure to run clear and slot home in front of the Kop, said it all. A very special footballer.

Well the field for this one is a little narrow, but it’s fair to say that Darwin Nunez has already made quite the impression on Reds fans, good and bad.

The good is that the Uruguayan looks capable of scoring bagfuls of goals, that he has personality and work ethic and serious potential.

The bad is that he marked his Anfield debut with a red card for headbutting Crystal Palace’s Joachim Andersen, which cost him the chance to build momentum early in the season.

Still, a return of nine goals in nine starts is more than decent. Expect him to get better and better as the season goes on.
