Dendoncker is the perfect fit for Pellegrini’s midfield

West Ham have once again been linked with a move for Leander Dendoncker, and he would be a far better option than William Carvalho for the Hammers’ midfield.

What’s the story?

This week, a report from RMC Sport claimed West Ham are in “pole position” to sign Dendoncker this summer.

It feels like the Hammers have been linked with the Belgian midfielder in every transfer window since the dawn of time, but the presence of Manuel Pellegrini may finally be enough to bring the impressive 23 year-old to East London.

Another name who has been linked with plenty of Premier League moves is William Carvalho.

The colossal defensive midfielder is expected to terminate his Sporting CP contract this summer after the team was attacked by a gang of fans at their training ground, but West Ham should avoid a summer swoop.

Carvalho is a typical defensive midfielder and could do a decent job for the Hammers, but his work rate is questionable, and his limited technical ability make him much less of a threat going forward than Dendoncker.

The Belgian is younger, hungrier and far more technically gifted, and could be the perfect missing link in Pellegrini’s midfield.

Why Dendoncker?

Valued at £15.3m by Transfermarkt, Dendoncker is one of the hottest prospects in Belgium’s next “golden generation”, and would be the ideal marquee signing to get Pellegrini’s reign off to a good start.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255909″ player=”12034″ title=”Three reasons we love to hate… Germany”]

While Carvalho is elite at breaking up play and stopping opposition attacks, Pellegrini needs a defensive midfielder who can dictate the game with the ball as well as without it, and that’s where the young Belgian has the edge.

Dendoncker is a superb passer, and any team that likes to keep the ball, as Pellegrini’s Hammers will, needs a player like the 23 year-old at the base of their midfield.

He is no slouch in a defensive sense either, averaging nearly two tackles and 2.5 interceptions per game last season.

Carvalho boasts similar defensive stats, and would do the defensive side of the role for the Hammers, but Dendoncker is a truly special player, and could be a fan favourite for years to come.

Guzan desperate for Wembley appearance

Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan wants to make amends for his biggest disappointment of his career by reaching the Capital One Cup final.

The American played in every minute of the club’s run to the 2010 final before being replaced by Brad Friedel to play Manchester United in the final.

Guzan is now the club’s number one ahead of Shay Given and is hoping to help Villa get one step closer to the final with victory against Swindon Town this evening.

“Being left out for the final was one of biggest disappointments of my career,” he told the Independent.

“It was quite frustrating and a difficult pill to swallow.

“But that’s behind me and I think that has made me a stronger goalkeeper and a stronger person.

“If we can get back there to Wembley again, that would be great.”

For the Swindon clash Villa will be forced into one change following the suspension of Joe Bennett, who got sent off in the 1-1 draw with Norwich.

Rooney return to Everton hasn’t turned out like anyone hoped

As reported by The Daily Mirror, Everton are ready to say goodbye to Wayne Rooney this summer and will listen to offers for his signature when the transfer window opens.

What’s the story?

The Toffees are set for a summer of rebuilding after another disappointing season in the English Premier League, with the future of key players and even management staff uncertain under the rule of majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri.

One player that could be set for an exit is Wayne Rooney, with The Mirror reporting that the club are ready to sanction the sale of the player after a lacklustre return from Manchester United.

Rated at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, is he a player that they should be willing to part with in the close season?

Is it time for him to leave?

With 10 goals in the Premier League this term, Rooney may have had a disappointing campaign at Everton but he is still the club’s top scorer. His initial return to his boyhood heroes was positive, scoring all ten of those goals before the Christmas period.

However, with no goals in his last 16 matches, question marks have been raised about his performances, with many wondering whether he still has the ability or desire to perform at the elite level.

There’s every chance that a new manager to spark a revival in his fortunes, but if there’s money on the table for him this summer, it would be tempting to take it from Everton’s perspective, who would also get extra resources from his salary coming off the wage bill.

Proving Sir Alex Ferguson wrong made me stronger, says Liverpool star

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has stated that proving former Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has made him a stronger player, Mirror reports.

Henderson will play an important role in England’s midfield after an outstanding season for his club, in which the Reds became unexpected challengers for the Premier League title.

The Liverpool regular has been criticized by the media in recent year but claims that his selection for the World Cup has proved doubter wrong.

He is expected to play alongside Steven Gerrard with the Three Lions, the same midfield partnership he has at Anfield.

The former Sunderland player has received some harsh criticism from Joey Barton on Twitter – labelling him as the ‘fall guy’ in last summer’s U21 tournament – and Alex Ferguson, who in his biography hit out at his gait and running style.

However all this only made the 23-year-old stronger.

“In football you are going to have times where you have got to be strong, and you have got to keep believing in your own ability,” he said. “That is just part and parcel of the game.

“Hopefully I can keep progressing as a player and getting better. There were a few people who did help me – the big players at Liverpool when you’re around them help you a lot.

“But at the same time you have to deal with stuff like that on your own and try and get through it on your own. No one else can change it – except yourself, to be honest.

“There is no one more disappointed than us when we don’t have a good game or are not playing well – I just had to keep battling and try and prove them wrong.”

In regards to Ferguson’s comments about his running style, Henderson said: “I think everybody blew it up to be more than it was.

“But looking back I took it as a bit of a compliment because he said he was watching us and thinking about buying us so I must have been doing something right.

Brendan Rodgers defends Gerrard

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has hit back at recent criticism of club captain Steven Gerrard.

The midfielder has taken the brunt of the blame for the Reds’ recent poor Premier League performances, with some suggesting that the 32-year-old is past his best.

Rodgers has leapt to the defence of his skipper, who has scored two goals so far this term:

“He’s carried this club for nearly 13 years, and it’s about time there was more than Steven picking up the baton of responsibility for Liverpool, ” he is quoted by SkySports.

“I don’t want to focus too much on him, other than that he’s been brilliant since I arrived here. His inspiration and leadership within the team has been phenomenal.

“He might not have got the goals he would have wanted this season, but you can see how effective he’s been and the quality of his game.

“Against Spurs, his range of passing, his commitment and his drive into the box was superb.”

He also confirmed that Lucas Leiva may return to the squad for this weekend’s clash with Southampton:

“Lucas Leiva will return to the squad, which is great news because he’s been working very, very hard and played the reserve game last week.

“He’s been training for a few weeks and looked very good, so we’ll look forward to bringing him back in.”

TABELA DO CARIOCA

Entrega e… gol (mal) anulado!
No entanto, o Rubro-Negro colecionava chances perdidas.

Bowlers send St Lucia packing

St Lucia Zouks were eliminated from the inaugural Caribbean Premier League after succumbing to a six-wicket defeat at the hands of Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel at Sabina Park in Kingston. T&T on the other hand, booked their berth in the semi-finals by moving up to fourth place in the table ahead of Antigua Hawksbills.St Lucia, who were at the bottom of the table when the match began, needed a win to stand a chance of making it into the semis, but an incisive bowling performance from T&T, spearheaded by an economical spell of 2 for 18 from legspinner Samuel Badree, restricted St Lucia to a paltry 99 in their 20 overs.Put in to bat, St Lucia never really got going, and lost the opener Tamim Iqbal in the third over when he made room to clear the infield and was bowled by Fidel Edwards. Badree then seized the initiative by dismissing Dwayne Smith for a golden duck, and four over later, he castled Misbah-ul-Haq’s off stump with one that kept very low to leave St Lucia struggling at 36 for 3 in the eighth over.Andre Fletcher put up a fighting 46 with a strike-rate of under 80, but he made sure he scored till the end amidst the fall of two more wickets of Herschelle Gibbs and Darren Sammy. While Gibbs was caught and bowled by Kevon Cooper for a 17-ball 10, Sammy played-on to his stumps for 16 after hitting three fours. With the lack of significant partnerships, St Lucia managed 18 off the last three overs, which included only one four, to set up a small chase for T&T.Kevin O’Brien and Adrian Barath laid a strong foundation by putting up a 56-run stand to leave T&T in a very healthy position. The openers departed in quick succession when O’Brien was beaten by Tino Best to be bowled for 37, and Barath was trapped lbw by Shane Shillingford three balls later.Mahela Jayawardene and Ross Taylor also reached double figures but both were dismissed in Garey Mathurin’s successive overs as he finished with 2 for 24 from his four overs. But the lack of runs on the board eventually made the difference, as Darren Bravo and Dwayne Bravo took T&T home with 13 balls to spare.T&T will next take on Jamaica Tallawahs on Sunday which will determine the semi-final line-ups.
