Arthur reveals two-series strategy

Australia’s former coach Mickey Arthur has revealed the tourists planned to inflict damage and gain intelligence on England in the away series before pushing hardest to regain the Ashes in the return bout at home

Australia’s former coach Mickey Arthur has revealed the tourists planned to inflict damage and gain intelligence on England in the away series before pushing hardest to regain the Ashes in the return bout at home. He also said the 3-0 scoreline would not have changed irrespective of selections because “that is what we’ve got at the moment”.While the new coach Darren Lehmann had stated before the series that his objective was simply to “win, win, win”, there had been some suggestions that Cricket Australia would be content with a competitive showing in England, provided the home matches would reap a winning result. Arthur confirmed that he and the captain Michael Clarke had been talking in terms of using the first series to prepare for the second.”We had a goal that I will reveal. We wanted to try to push England really hard in England, but we wanted to win in Australia, this is what Michael and I wanted to do,” Arthur told ABC Radio. “We didn’t go into the series ever to lose it, but we wanted to develop enough intelligence on all the England players, we had a lot but there was going to be some current stuff we could use.”We were going to really push them close, give the players in our team the confidence to see that England could get beaten, and then go for them in Australia. That was how we wanted to go about our escapade there. You could have put anybody in [the team], the results were going to be the results because that is what we’ve got at the moment. That is the current crop of players. But as coaches it’s such a good challenge because there’s so much unfulfilled potential that you can make better.”Arthur was not the only senior CA figure pushing this view before the start of the series, and some players are understood to have been taken aback by the attitude when they assembled together in Bristol before the tour officially began. It remains to be seen whether the current leadership of Clarke and Lehmann have managed to glean enough from this series to help them at home.Looking back on his time as coach, a period ended suddenly in England before the Ashes tour and then played out acrimoniously in a legal battle with CA over severance payments, Arthur said a 4-0 defeat in India and its associated disciplinary problems had been a major blow. For that he cited the BCCI’s desire to avenge an identical series ledger in Australia in 2011-12, duly preparing pitches to suit the purpose.”India was a really tough tour for us in so many ways. I’ve been privileged to tour India a couple of times and those were the worst conditions that I’d ever seen,” Arthur said. “They hijacked us, and they clearly wanted revenge for the 4-0 series win we had got when they toured here the last time.”One goes back to the Perth Test where the wicket was green and we played to our strengths and won the Test in two and a half days. They clearly wanted retribution for that and produced some of the toughest conditions I’d ever seen. They went out of their way to prepare those conditions and I can’t argue with that.”Despite the circumstances of his departure, Arthur said he had been watching the Ashes series very closely. Too closely, perhaps, for members of his family, who had asked him why he could not let it go. “I’ve been watching every ball of the Ashes,” he said. “My family has been saying ‘let it go’ and I can’t. I’ve spent too much time with these boys trying to make them better cricketers, I’ve got to watch it.”I am talking to the television. The funny thing as a coach is with a trained eye and knowing the psyche of all the players, I can sit and watch something developing and know what’s going to happen an over later. I’m going ‘don’t do that again, keep hitting straight, they’re trying to set you up for the lbw … keep hitting straight, oh across the line, damn lbw again’.”

Buttler mulls over Somerset future

Jos Buttler, the England one-day wicketkeeper, is likely to leave Somerset at the end of the season after being replaced behind the stumps by Craig Kieswetter in the Friends Life t20.

Jos Buttler, the England one-day wicketkeeper, will give fresh consideration to leaving Somerset when his contract expires at the end of the season after being replaced behind the stumps by Craig Kieswetter in the Friends Life t20.Buttler, 22, was offered a new contract at Taunton but delayed signing new terms until it became apparent how much time he would be given with the gloves. He found himself in the outfield again against Northants on Wednesday night and is now bound to take further soundings over a potential move to secure a place as a No. 1 wicketkeeper.Dave Nosworthy accepted the difficult situation in comments to the Bristol Post “We want him to stay, we have chatted to him and he has got to make a decision,” he said. “Jos is a Somerset lad and we would hate to lose him – but he has to do what’s best for his career, and we find ourselves in an unbelievable situation.”It really is like having Gilchrist and Boucher in the same squad – what do you do? Craig is a top keeper and people tend to forget he has played for England very recently. Jos, similarly, is a top keeper and is just getting his opportunities at international level now. They are equally good fielders and they are equally good batters.”Buttler has been highly praised for his hitting ability during his 14 ODIs and 23 T20 internationals but his wicketkeeping is regarded as a work in progress and Somerset face an extremely difficult decision about how best to handle the impasse for the benefit of the club.Somerset chief executive, Guy Lavender, has stated that the club “will do everything in its power to see that Jos’ best interests are met” but Somerset now face a difficult decision about how much they can promise Buttler, who may miss large chunks of the season with England’s one-day side, without compromising their selection policy or the overall strength of their squad.”No assurances have been given to Jos that he would be keeping wicket in all one-day cricket,” Lavender said. “What we have committed to do is to make sure that Jos has good opportunities to keep in order to prepare for Team England duties. It is patently ridiculous to guarantee any player a place in the starting line-up for an entire season – that has to be based on performance and what is in the best interests of the team.”Born and raised in Taunton, Buttler is keen to stay at Somerset but his county’s decision to reinstate Kieswetter could force his hand. Buttler sought assurances that he would keep wicket in both one-day competitions this season, but found himself in the outfield for Somerset’s Friends Life t20 match against Northants in Northampton on Wednesday night.Somerset were initially spared a difficult decision by Kieswetter’s broken thumb that kept him out for two months from the end of April. On his return, Buttler was with England’s one-day squad. The pair were available together for the start of the Friends Life t20 and Buttler kept wicket against Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire.Kieswetter returned for Somerset on June 14 but to further complicate matters Alex Barrow kept wicket for the next four matches. On July 12, Buttler was told that Kieswetter would resume as wicketkeeper against Glamorgan with his thumb fully recovered.Lavender also expressed the view that Somerset had a responsibility to all the wicketkeepers on their books and described the sharing arrangement as “workable”.Buttler is certain to discuss the latest developments with England’s one-day coach, Ashley Giles, and his agent, the former England batsman Neil Fairbrother, before deciding on his future.Somerset are yet to receive a formal approach for Buttler and are keen for him to stay in the West Country, but informal approaches have a way of queuing up long before the end of a county season.

St Lucia Zouks were eliminated from the inaugural Caribbean Premier League after succumbing to a six-wicket defeat at the hands of Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel at Sabina Park in Kingston. T&T on the other hand, booked their berth in the semi-finals by moving up to fourth place in the table ahead of Antigua Hawksbills.St Lucia, who were at the bottom of the table when the match began, needed a win to stand a chance of making it into the semis, but an incisive bowling performance from T&T, spearheaded by an economical spell of 2 for 18 from legspinner Samuel Badree, restricted St Lucia to a paltry 99 in their 20 overs.Put in to bat, St Lucia never really got going, and lost the opener Tamim Iqbal in the third over when he made room to clear the infield and was bowled by Fidel Edwards. Badree then seized the initiative by dismissing Dwayne Smith for a golden duck, and four over later, he castled Misbah-ul-Haq’s off stump with one that kept very low to leave St Lucia struggling at 36 for 3 in the eighth over.Andre Fletcher put up a fighting 46 with a strike-rate of under 80, but he made sure he scored till the end amidst the fall of two more wickets of Herschelle Gibbs and Darren Sammy. While Gibbs was caught and bowled by Kevon Cooper for a 17-ball 10, Sammy played-on to his stumps for 16 after hitting three fours. With the lack of significant partnerships, St Lucia managed 18 off the last three overs, which included only one four, to set up a small chase for T&T.Kevin O’Brien and Adrian Barath laid a strong foundation by putting up a 56-run stand to leave T&T in a very healthy position. The openers departed in quick succession when O’Brien was beaten by Tino Best to be bowled for 37, and Barath was trapped lbw by Shane Shillingford three balls later.Mahela Jayawardene and Ross Taylor also reached double figures but both were dismissed in Garey Mathurin’s successive overs as he finished with 2 for 24 from his four overs. But the lack of runs on the board eventually made the difference, as Darren Bravo and Dwayne Bravo took T&T home with 13 balls to spare.T&T will next take on Jamaica Tallawahs on Sunday which will determine the semi-final line-ups.

TABELA DO CARIOCA

Entrega e… gol (mal) anulado!
No entanto, o Rubro-Negro colecionava chances perdidas.

Swann leaves New Zealand on brink of defeat

England sentenced New Zealand to a morning of misery at Headingley as they increased their lead well beyond 400 and set-up a declaration on the fourth afternoon in Leeds.

The Report by George Dobell27-May-2013
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAlastair Cook brought up his 25th Test century and seventh as captain•AFP

England will nervously draw back the curtains in their hotel rooms on day five in Leeds. Having earned themselves a dominant position against New Zealand they will feel only rain can thwart them as they look to clinch a 2-0 series victory. For that reason there was, perhaps, a perverse pleasure for New Zealand as England extended their second innings beyond lunch on the fourth day. While New Zealand could have few realistic hopes of surpassing England’s target – they would have to set a new world record to do so and on a pitch offering turn and variable bounce to the bowlers – the tactic did perhaps present New Zealand with enhanced prospects of a draw. With rain forecast to curtail the final day of the Test, New Zealand may not need to survive three full sessions on the final day. So, as England plundered their bowling on the fourth day, New Zealand could, at least, take comfort in the thought that every ball they were forced to remain out in the field was a ball less they were required to survive with the bat.England’s tactics have taken some criticism. Some say they should have enforced the follow-on, some say they should have batted with greater urgency on the third evening and some say that, with an eye on the weather forecast, they should have declared far earlier. Having earned such a vast lead, the decision not to have attacking fields – there were three men on the boundary at times – was also puzzling. But the fact is that had bad light not brought an early close on day four – and at a ground with floodlights play may well have continued – they might have won this game in three days (the first day was lost to rain). For many years, England supporters would have been delighted with such a scenario. It perhaps speaks volumes for the progress they have made that more is now demanded.Bearing in mind New Zealand had only scored 449 runs in the series for the loss of 30 wickets, it did seem an abundantly cautious tactic. No side has ever made more than 418 to win a Test in the fourth innings and only four teams have ever made more than 400 to win in the fourth innings. New Zealand’s highest chase is 324, made against Pakistan in Christchurch in 1994. Perhaps, however, England also had an eye on exhausting the New Zealand attack ahead of the ODI series that beings later this week.If New Zealand are saved by the weather on day five, they will also owe thanks to Ross Taylor who produced a fine counterattacking innings to shore up his side just as it appeared they might suffer a familiar collapse and the game could end a day early. Demonstrating an application and technique that his team-mates would do well to emulate, Taylor cut and drove well and, by playing deep in his crease or using his reach to stretch a long way forward, negated Graeme Swann for much of the afternoon. He had some nervous moments. Not only did he take a thumping blow to the arm off the hostile bowling of Steven Finn, but he was given out by umpire Steve Davis on 60, caught behind off Swann by one that went on with the arm. The decision was subsequently overturned on appeal with replays showing the bat had brushed only the pad.Taylor apart, though, New Zealand struggled once again. Peter Fulton’s miserable series – 36 runs at an average of 9.00 – ended when a delivery from Stuart Broad reared from just back of a good length, took the shoulder of the bat and looped to gully and, later, Dean Brownlie’s stubborn innings was ended by a brute of a bouncer from Finn that followed the batsman and took his glove as he sought to protect his face. It was a delivery of which Curtly Ambrose would have been proud. In between Finn’s wickets, Swann struck twice. In his second over, Kane Williamson, moving right across his stumps in an attempt to get outside the line, was beaten by some sharp turn and given out leg before by Davis. Williamson called for a review but replays suggested the ball had hit him in line and would have just clipped the top of leg stump.Hamish Rutherford impressed for a while. He drove a couple of sweetly-timed fours off Broad – first off front and then back foot – before punching one back past Finn and then flicking Swann through midwicket for another four. But in attempting to play one that slid on with the arm, Rutherford was caught at short-leg via an inside edge and his pad by the alert Joe Root.Later, Swann had Martin Guptill edging one that did not turn, caught at slip off the outside edge, before Taylor’s fine innings was ended by a full delivery that may well have deceived the batsman in the flight, beat his drive, turned and hit the stumps. Swann became the first spinner to take eight wickets in a Headingley Test since Derek Underwood did so in 1972.Earlier England sentenced New Zealand to a morning of misery as they increased their lead well beyond 400. Upping the tempo noticeably after a ponderous end to the third day, England scored 133 runs in 29 overs (4.59 runs an over) in the session taking full toll of a New Zealand attack lacking the injured Trent Boult.Alastair Cook, who resumed on his overnight score of 88, soon completed his 25th Test century and seventh in 11 Tests as captain. Fluent on the drive, quick to cut and merciless off his legs, Cook added 134 in 41 overs with Jonathan Trott. No England player has scored more Test centuries than Cook and only Graham Gooch, with 11 in 34 Tests, Peter May, with 10 in 41, Andrew Strauss and Michael Vaughan, with nine each in 50 and 51 Tests respectively, and Mike Atherton, with eight in 54, have scored more as captain.Trott’s acceleration was more noticeable. It had taken him 69 deliveries to score his first 11 runs on day three, but on the fourth morning he allowed himself to take more risks and was dropped on 40 when reverse-sweeping Kane Williamson. Later he whipped Tim Southee through midwicket and reverse-swept another four off the part-time spin of Martin Guptill. In all Trott scored 65 runs from 93 balls in the session but fell second ball after lunch chasing a wide one. By the time he was out, he had become the highest run scorer in Test cricket in 2013 to date.Cook eventually fell as he attempted to hit the off-spin of Williamson over the top, while Ian Bell fell in similarly selfless fashion as he mis-hit a slog-sweep. But it hardly mattered. Joe Root produced an outrageous reverse-sweep off the pace of Wagner that flew to the boundary and hit three fours in his first 13 balls before falling in the race to set-up the declaration. There was further good news for England on day four as Kevin Pietersen returned to the nets, beginning his comeback from a knee injury.
