Somerset savour Lord's demolition

The battle at both ends of the Division One table looks likely to go to the wire. But when Somerset finally set course for the west country tonight several hours after sealing a stunning victory with nearly five sessions to spare, they did so safe in the knowledge that survival is once again in their own hands.Marcus Trescothick and his team were reluctant to tear themselves away from the home of cricket, wishing to savour an innings victory – their first in a Championship fixture at Lord’s since 1983 – for as long as possible.”You never get tired of playing here,” Trescothick said. “So we’re not shooting off too quickly because we want to hang around and enjoy what we’ve achieved.”What Somerset had done, in simple terms, was to lift themselves out of the relegation places. And with home fixtures to come, starting next week, against first Derbyshire and then Surrey – the two sides below them – before finishing the campaign at Trent Bridge, top flight status is now theirs to lose. The mood was entirely different, of course, in the other dressing room at Lord’s. Middlesex’s title challenge, which looked so potent before last week’s shock defeat in Derby, is now all but over. Director of cricket Angus Fraser was in no mood to pull any punches, describing the team’s batting performance as “unacceptable”, and his men now face a real test of character against Surrey next week. But poorly though the hosts played, this match should be remembered most for a terrific Somerset performance that was a world away from many they have produced this season – and much more in keeping with what friends and foes expected of them during 2013.In danger, by just after tea on the first day, of being dismissed for less than 250, they saw their last three wickets add 238 runs with new recruit Piyush Chawla contributing a priceless century from No 9.Then, once Middlesex started batting, an attack which had looked threadbare before start of play – with Steve Kirby and Peter Trego missing through injury – put the title hopefuls under enormous pressure. At 19, Jamie Overton (who joins England next week for a possible one-day international debut) was easily the best known of the three front-line pace bowlers. But it was two 21-year-olds, Lewis Gregory and Craig Meschede, who did most of the damage – Meschede striking three times in the first innings and then Gregory claiming a first ever five-wicket haul second time around once the follow-on was enforced. The outside edge was found with regularity and almost every catch was held (five of them in the second innings by Trescothick, at second slip) as Somerset refused to give the home side a hint of respite. Their only other victory of the season had been a nerve-shredder at Derby but this one was complete in almost every aspect.”It’s amazing really – an outstanding victory,” said Trescothick. “I thought we played brilliantly well. Bar one session on the first day when we lost a few wickets and put ourselves under pressure we were pretty clinical throughout so I’m delighted.”Trescothick acknowledged that his team’s first innings fightback from 211 for 7 had been vital. “To end up with 450 was huge because the pitch was nibbling around a bit,” he said. “And then our bowlers were outstanding and we asked their batsmen a lot of questions.”Lewis Gregory has been taking the new ball in the second team and bowling nicely and we know with Craig Meschede that when he gets on a wicket that seams about a bit he can be lethal and rip through teams.””What we have to do next week against Derbyshire is get ourselves back into this frame of mind because if we play like this we can beat anyone. That’s our challenge.”As for Middlesex, this is not the first time they have lost back-to-back Championship matches – they did so against Yorkshire and Warwickshire in mid-summer. But falling to Derbyshire last week and now disintegrating against Somerset will surely prove a double too far when it comes to trying to capture the title. In some ways, they have done well to get this far into the race without slipping away because much of their batting has been suspect all season. Joe Denly has made it beyond fifty just three times with Dawid Malan failing to reach even that small milestone while averaging in the mid-teens.Neil Dexter did make a century, against Sussex, but has not added to it and No. 6 John Simpson has a best of 97 not out but not much else to write home about.”We batted very poorly in both innings – to be bowled out twice in a day on a surface like that is unacceptable,” said Fraser. “Everybody knows that. We don’t have to go ranting and raving. What you hope is that it is a one off and the challenge is to make sure that next week we play a lot better and the players show the character to come through and bat as we know they can.”

Buttler mulls over Somerset future

Jos Buttler, the England one-day wicketkeeper, is likely to leave Somerset at the end of the season after being replaced behind the stumps by Craig Kieswetter in the Friends Life t20.

Jos Buttler, the England one-day wicketkeeper, will give fresh consideration to leaving Somerset when his contract expires at the end of the season after being replaced behind the stumps by Craig Kieswetter in the Friends Life t20.Buttler, 22, was offered a new contract at Taunton but delayed signing new terms until it became apparent how much time he would be given with the gloves. He found himself in the outfield again against Northants on Wednesday night and is now bound to take further soundings over a potential move to secure a place as a No. 1 wicketkeeper.Dave Nosworthy accepted the difficult situation in comments to the Bristol Post “We want him to stay, we have chatted to him and he has got to make a decision,” he said. “Jos is a Somerset lad and we would hate to lose him – but he has to do what’s best for his career, and we find ourselves in an unbelievable situation.”It really is like having Gilchrist and Boucher in the same squad – what do you do? Craig is a top keeper and people tend to forget he has played for England very recently. Jos, similarly, is a top keeper and is just getting his opportunities at international level now. They are equally good fielders and they are equally good batters.”Buttler has been highly praised for his hitting ability during his 14 ODIs and 23 T20 internationals but his wicketkeeping is regarded as a work in progress and Somerset face an extremely difficult decision about how best to handle the impasse for the benefit of the club.Somerset chief executive, Guy Lavender, has stated that the club “will do everything in its power to see that Jos’ best interests are met” but Somerset now face a difficult decision about how much they can promise Buttler, who may miss large chunks of the season with England’s one-day side, without compromising their selection policy or the overall strength of their squad.”No assurances have been given to Jos that he would be keeping wicket in all one-day cricket,” Lavender said. “What we have committed to do is to make sure that Jos has good opportunities to keep in order to prepare for Team England duties. It is patently ridiculous to guarantee any player a place in the starting line-up for an entire season – that has to be based on performance and what is in the best interests of the team.”Born and raised in Taunton, Buttler is keen to stay at Somerset but his county’s decision to reinstate Kieswetter could force his hand. Buttler sought assurances that he would keep wicket in both one-day competitions this season, but found himself in the outfield for Somerset’s Friends Life t20 match against Northants in Northampton on Wednesday night.Somerset were initially spared a difficult decision by Kieswetter’s broken thumb that kept him out for two months from the end of April. On his return, Buttler was with England’s one-day squad. The pair were available together for the start of the Friends Life t20 and Buttler kept wicket against Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire.Kieswetter returned for Somerset on June 14 but to further complicate matters Alex Barrow kept wicket for the next four matches. On July 12, Buttler was told that Kieswetter would resume as wicketkeeper against Glamorgan with his thumb fully recovered.Lavender also expressed the view that Somerset had a responsibility to all the wicketkeepers on their books and described the sharing arrangement as “workable”.Buttler is certain to discuss the latest developments with England’s one-day coach, Ashley Giles, and his agent, the former England batsman Neil Fairbrother, before deciding on his future.Somerset are yet to receive a formal approach for Buttler and are keen for him to stay in the West Country, but informal approaches have a way of queuing up long before the end of a county season.

The lawyer of arrested cricketer Sreesanth has insisted his client is ‘totally innocent’ and that he will seek bail during the next hearing. On Thursday, a judge had remanded Sreesanth and two other Rajasthan Royals players to five days in police custody after they had been arrested by Delhi police on corruption charges.”I asked them what is the evidence you have against him, they failed to give any kind of paper against Sreesanth in the court,” Sreesanth’s lawyer Deepak Prakash said. “Please support Sreesanth, the person is innocent, we are doing a crime right now giving the wrong news about him. I clarified from him, he is never involved in this, he is totally innocent.”He never talked to any bookie,” Prakash said. “No money is received, no telephone call, nothing is established, he is innocent.”Police alleged Sreesanth had promised bookies that he would concede at least 14 runs in his second over against Kings XI Punjab on May 9 in exchange for Rs 40 lakh (US$73,024). The police alleged that Sreesanth made the appropriate signal, which was to ask for a towel that he would tuck inside his trousers before bowling the over. Prakash dismissed the charges. “A person can use a towel in any way, how is this evidence?” he asked. “It is a matter of luck. He can use a towel whenever he wants.”Sreesanth can only apply for bail after his time in police custody, which means he will have to wait at least four more days. The Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar had also suggested that the police could invoke the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, offences under which are non-bailable.

Big spenders still searching for returns

A preview of the Mumbai Indians in the lead-up to the 2013 season of the IPL

Abhishek Purohit02-Apr-2013Big PictureAnil Kumble and Ricky Ponting are mentor and captain of Mumbai Indians for the season•Mumbai Indians

If willingness to put millions behind desire was a guarantee of success, Mumbai Indians should have been IPL winners multiple times by now. Year after year, auction after auction, they have poured in the big bucks and signed the biggest names, but the prize has always eluded them. The IPL is only five seasons old, and there are more franchises that haven’t won it than those that have, but the tag of free-spending underachievers has belonged to Mumbai. Three successive seasons of making the IPL knockouts and a Champions League title haven’t quite been able to shake off that label. That’s the price you pay for assembling so many overseas and Indian stars. This season is no different. John Wright and Anil Kumble are the latest additions to the Mumbai management. Ricky Ponting is the newest captain. These are not merely big names. These are institutions, men whose achievements will resonate for generations to come. They have probably the biggest crowd-puller the game has ever seen, Sachin Tendulkar, whose presence guarantees sellouts at Wankhede Stadium weeks before the season begins. There is Kieron Pollard, to whom Twenty20 comes as naturally as cricket did to Garry Sobers. Why is such a collection of superstars still without an IPL title? It is as much a reflection on the fickleness of the format as on Mumbai’s inability to handle the pressure in knockout clashes. It is difficult to imagine a similar line-up going without success for so long in Tests or ODIs, although South Africa will readily dispute that when it comes to world tournaments. For what it’s worth, the South African flavour of the squad last season has given way to one that is overwhelmingly Australian, with four of the five buys in the 2013 auction coming from Ponting’s country, including the million-dollar Glenn Maxwell. The Indian contingent, especially the first-choice players, is perhaps the strongest in the IPL.When you have so much to play with, you are prone to tinker too much too soon if the results don’t come – Mumbai tried 24 players, the most, last season and as many as eight opening combinations. Stability is one thing Ponting will have to strive for. The results could follow. Or then again, the knockouts could prove to be the stumbling point. Regardless, the Wankhede stands will be packed and shrieking.Key PlayersMumbai were the only bidders for Ricky Ponting in the auction. They bought him at base price and made him captain. This was probably the only way for Ponting to return to the IPL. Most other franchises have settled leadership. Ponting is making the most of what is left of his playing days following the end of a great international career in December. After the IPL, he will play in England and the West Indies. No love is lost between the former Australia captain and Indian fans, and now he is leading a franchise which has Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh and Kumble.Ponting’s record suggests he isn’t a bad Twenty20 batsman at all. He has been in fine nick; more than 900 runs in the Sheffield Shield and a decent run in the Big Bash. He was one of the longest-serving captains in international cricket, and has an overflowing trophy cabinet to back his credentials. On the face of it, it seems to be a bargain buy for a splurging franchise that has had to do with reluctant and hot-headed captains in the past.Pollard was Mumbai’s second highest wicket-taker last season, behind Lasith Malinga. Harbhajan had six wickets from 17 matches; RP Singh 10 from 11 at nearly eight runs an over. Barring Munaf Patel to an extent, there was little strike support for Malinga from the other frontline bowlers. Malinga has only four overs in a T20 game, and the others will have to do better than their 2012 showing.Davy Jacobs, James Franklin, R Sathish, Aiden Blizzard, T Suman, Richard Levi, Herschelle Gibbs, Dwayne Smith … that is not some random wishlist for a Mumbai Indians XI, but the list of opening partners for Sachin Tendulkar over the previous two seasons. Only the pairing with Smith had some success. Phillip Hughes is the newest contender to open with Tendulkar, whose T20 strike-rate has also suffered along with his overall decline. Unless Tendulkar can script yet another revival in his batting, the onus will be on his partner to provide firepower at the top. Who will it be, or rather, how many more combinations will we see?Big players inUndoubtedly Ponting, although paying a million dollars for Maxwell also makes him a big signing. However, with Ponting, Pollard and Malinga likely to take three of the four overseas players’ slots, it is to be seen how many games Maxwell gets. Many have pointed to his lacklustre debut Test series in India to scoff at the price Mumbai paid for him, but if reverse logic was to be applied, Pollard should have been hailed as a potential Test great by now.Big players outThisara Perera, the hard-hitting Sri Lanka allrounder, was released by the franchise and bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for $675,000 in the 2013 auction.Under the radarFirst-class batting and bowling averages of 42.03 and 25.47 suggest that Rishi Dhawan, the 23-year old from Himachal Pradesh, has the makings of a genuine allrounder. Another allrounder, Madhya Pradesh’s Jalaj Saxena has been around for a while, and his batting has prospered in recent times, although the same cannot be said about his offbreaks.AvailabilityIf, and that is a big if, Franklin is picked in New Zealand’s Test squad to tour England, he could end up missing a substantial chunk of the tournament in May.

Northamptonshire’s hopes of taking full control of their Championship match against Glamorgan were held up by rain and the swing bowling of Jim Allenby on the second day in Cardiff.Only 17.1 overs were possible during 70 minutes of play, with Northamptonshire moving on to 145 for 5, a first-innings lead of 11. In that time Allenby gave Glamorgan hopes of a comeback with the wickets of Rob Newton and Stephen Peters. The morning session was washed out because of steady drizzle and, after an early lunch, play eventually resumed at 1.10pm with Northamptonshire on 108 for 3, 26 behind Glamorgan’s 134 all out.Captain Peters and Newton batted watchfully in the opening hour and edged the visitors into a lead. But that lead stood at just three runs when Northamptonshire lost their first wicket of the day.Newton was out leg-before to a swinging delivery from Allenby after making 39 in a 79-run partnership with his captain.Allenby struck again three overs later to dismiss Peters, who edged to Stewart Walters at second slip. Peters went for 67 having only added seven runs to his overnight score.Rain stopped play again at 2.25pm and the day was eventually abandoned at 4.45pm.

Mohammad Nabi, the Afghanistan allrounder, will lead the side in the ICC Intercontinental Cup in the UAE, after Nawroz Mangal was stripped of the captaincy following his dismal show in the limited-over series in Pakistan last month. Mangal had led the side for more than four years.Afghanistan, in the recent tour of Pakistan, failed to make an impact under Mangal, losing the limited-over series against the Pakistan ‘A’ team and various regional sides. Mangal, however, was retained in the 18-man squad named ahead of the international fixtures against Scotland in UAE, with wicketkeeper batsman Mohammad Shahzad named as vice-captain.Nabi, 28, who skipped the Pakistan tour to play in the Bangladesh Premier League, was the top wicket-taker for Sylhet Royals, taking 18 wickets in 14 matches at 19.27. This is not the first time Nabi has been handed the captaincy, as he was earlier named captain for the Asian Games in 2010 where Afghanistan finished runners-up, losing to Bangladesh in the final. They will head to the UAE to play two Twenty20 internationals against Scotland at Sharjah, starting March 3, followed by two ODIs in the ICC World Cricket League Championship. From March 12, the team will play a first-class match against the same opponents in the sixth edition of the ICC Intercontinental Cup, which is to be held in Abu Dhabi.Squad: Mohammad Nabi (capt), Mohammad Shahzad (vice-capt & wk), Karim Sadiq, Nawroz Mangal, Javed Ahmadi, Mohibullah Paak, Samiullah Shenwari, Gulbodin Naib, Hamza Hotak, Dawlat Zadran, Izatullah Dawlatzai, Aftab Alam, Mirwais Ashraf, Afsar Zazai, Shabir Noori, Shapoor Zadran, Hamid Hassan and Asghar Stanikzai
