Huddersfield Town are set to make a move for Rotherham manager Paul Warne, according to Football League World.
The Lowdown: Crucial win
Danny Schofield was relieved of his duties as Huddersfield manager in midweek following a 2-1 defeat to Wigan. The club announced that Narcis Pelach and Paul Harsley would take temporary charge for Saturday’s league game against Cardiff City, which they won 1-0 thanks to Jordan Rhodes’ early goal.
The victory takes the Terriers to within three points of climbing out of the Championship relegation zone, with Dean Hoyle continuing the search to find Schofield’s replacement.
The Latest: Warne linked with Huddersfield
According to Football League World, Huddersfield are set to make a move for Warne after being knocked back in their pursuit of Plymouth Argyle head coach Steven Schumacher.
The report adds that Huddersfield will find it ‘very hard’ to persuade Warne to join, with the Rotherham boss admitting after his team’s draw with Middlesbrough on Saturday night that he is yet to receive any contact from the Terriers.
The Verdict: Time is ticking
The 49-year-old is approaching 2,000 days as Rotherham manager and appears to be extremely happy with his current employers. Therefore, a move to the John Smith’s Stadium appears to be a fairly ambitious one, but it looks as if the Terriers will try their luck.
Hoyle and co now have the international break to bring in a new manager, and hopefully Schofield’s successor will be in the door by the time Huddersfield travel to Reading on October 1.
Leeds United employee Noel Whelan believes that summer signing Wilfried Gnonto could be ‘the bargain of the season’, as per Football Insider.
The Lowdown: Late move
The Whites both spent and received close to £100m this summer in what was a busy few months for Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta.
Leeds brought in six players over the age of 20, while also signing teenagers Darko Gyabi, Sonny Perkins and Gnonto. The Italy international was the final addition of the summer late on transfer deadline day after the Yorkshire club failed with moves for Cody Gakpo and Bamba Dieng earlier in the day.
The Latest: Whelan’s comments
Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said that he has heard good things from Thorp Arch regarding the teenager and feels that he could be ‘good value’ at Elland Road.
The 47-year-old said of Gnonto:
“The fact that he’s a full Italy international just shows how highly he’s rated. Leeds United went in for him, he’s 18 years old – it seems like he could be a real bargain, perhaps even the bargain of the season.
“From what people are saying on the training ground, he’s very bright, lively, strong, quick. He could be good value for a few goals in the first-team this season.”
The Verdict: Fingers crossed
There shouldn’t be too much pressure placed on the 18-year-old’s shoulders this season, but it would be brilliant if he could hit the ground running in Yorkshire.
You’d expect that he’ll initially be behind Patrick Bamford, Rodrigo and Joe Gelhardt in Jesse Marsch’s pecking order, but he may still get the chance to impress from the bench over the coming months.
As Whelan mentions, Gnonto is already a full Italy international and arrives with plenty of first-team experience under his belt with FC Zurich, so he could prove to be a smart addition.
Glasgow Rangers suffered a shocking defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic at Parkhead this afternoon, losing 4-0 in an incredibly one-sided encounter that will give Ange Postecoglou and his men further momentum.
The Ibrox side came into the tie trailing the Premiership leaders by two points and were looking to overhaul that deficit and leapfrog them at the top of the table with a victory this afternoon.
However, it turned out to be a terrible day at the office for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his side, with plenty of mistakes made by the backline, including a howler by goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin to allow David Turnbull to score Celtic’s fourth of the match.
The Light Blues couldn’t cope with the sheer relentlessness of the Celtic attack and were second to almost every ball.
Yet again, lessons were not learned from the 3-0 defeat in Van Bronckhorst’s first Old Firm clash as manager, and the way these matches are approached will need to change going forward.
There were plenty of poor performances, with Glen Kamara being particularly anonymous but Antonio Colak’s stood out as arguably the worst of the outfield players.
Colak was an Old Firm disaster
The striker came into the clash having scored seven goals in his previous seven matches and was arguably Gers’ biggest threat.
The match didn’t exactly go to plan however as he received a rating of just 6.1 from SofaScore, the lowest on the pitch from both sides.
He had a total of just ten touches during the match, making just one successful pass and he had three shots off target.
The Croatian also lost 80% of his total duels during the contest, failing to establish himself either in the air or on the ground.
It was a disastrous performance all round from the player, especially after a strong start to life at the club. The Old Firm derby puts pressure on both teams that many players haven’t experienced before so this could well be a reason for his display.
Rangers take on Ajax on Wednesday evening in the Champions League and Van Bronckhorst will be aiming for a massive reaction from this abject result.
Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch could start both Patrick Bamford and Joe Gelhardt against Brentford this afternoon.
The Lowdown: Shortage of attacking options
The Whites were dealt a major setback in the week with Rodrigo suffering a dislocated shoulder against Everton. The Spaniard will now be out of action for three to four weeks, leaving Victor Orta scrambling to sign a new forward before the deadline.
Teenager Wilfried Gnonto arrived from FC Zurich, but it looks as if Marsch will need to rely on Bamford and Gelhardt in the immediate future, beginning today.
The Latest: Marsch’s comments
The Independent shared a story on Friday morning, relaying comments from Marsch ahead of this afternoon’s trip to the capital.
He stated that Bamford and Gelhardt could both get the nod from the off, hinting that the latter of the two could occupy a deeper role, perhaps similar to Rodrigo’s natural position.
The Verdict: Interesting
Bamford and Gelhardt have never started a game together for Leeds – Gelhardt enjoyed his breakthrough campaign last year in part due to Bamford’s injury issues.
Therefore, starting the pair would be an interesting move, meaning one of Jack Harrison, Brenden Aaronson or Luis Sinisterra may have to make way from the starting XI to occupy both.
Some may say it could be a risk to start the pair, especially as Bamford has featured twice from the off and Gelhardt is yet to do so in the Premier League this season, with both already missing games through injury.
Surrey stumble despite resistance from Kalea Moore and Alexa Stonehouse

Lancashire Women stayed on course for the Metro Bank Cup semi-finals with a four-wicket win over Surrey at Beckenham.Grace Potts took 3 for 31 as Surrey were bowled out for 225, while Hannah Jones took 2 for 33 and was unlucky not to get two more. Kalea Moore was dropped twice off her bowling and she cashed in to make a career-best List A score of 67, while Alexa Stonehouse was the next highest scorer with 48.Seren Smale anchored the visitor’s reply with 67 not out, as they closed on 227 for 6, victory secured with 24 balls remaining. Stonehouse was the pick of Surrey’s bowlers with 3 for 34.Lancashire chose to bowl and quickly made inroads, reducing them to 60 for 5. Ailsa Lister dropped Bryony Smith off Potts when she was on 14 but two balls later Potts dismissed Smith with an outstanding one-handed return catch.Kira Chathli then went for 17, driving Kate Cross straight to Smale. Alice Capsey was run out by Fi Morris for 5 and Paige Scholfield was bowled by Hannah Jones for just a single.Jones then had Alice Davidson-Richards caught for 20 by Cross at mid-off, after she’d initially dropped her drive, but Phoebe Franklin and Moore responded with the biggest partnership of the innings to that point, putting on 61 before the former cut Phoebe Graham to Emma Lamb and was out for 25. Morris then had Alice Monaghan caught behind for 4.Moore cut Jones for a single to reach 50 and she was on 53 when she heaved Jones to the midwicket boundary and was dropped over the rope by Lister. In Jones’ final over Moore was put down again, this time on 67 and this time when Gaby Lewis missed a far more difficult chance at square leg. This time she couldn’t profit as Moore was lbw to Lamb in the next over, the 42nd.Stonehouse, who’d put on 55 with Moore, blasted a huge six off Cross but fell to Potts in the final over, holing out to Graham at mid-off and Potts then ended the innings one ball early when she had Danni Gregory caught, also by Graham, for 18.Lancashire’s openers put on 74 for the opening wicket before Lewis tried to pull out of a hook shot and edged Monaghan behind for 39.The visitors seemed to be coasting at 117 for 1, when two quick wickets opened a window for Surrey. Lamb tried to reach for a Stonehouse delivery and was brilliantly caught by a diving Franklin at backward point and Morris lofted Stonehouse to Scholfield for 6.Ellie Threlkeld went to an even better catch by Smith, who almost pirouetted to take a one-handed grab off Moore, but she made a useful 21 and by then Lancashire only needed 47.Smale eased past 50 by clipping Moore for four through midwicket. The target was down to three when two wickets gave the scoreline some respectability: Lister skied Stonehouse to Scholfield and although she was dropped, she hit the next delivery straight to Smith for 23. Collins ramped Franklin to Tilly Corteen-Coleman for a duck, but this merely allowed Cross to hit Franklin back over her head for the winning boundary.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar had a minor injury for RCB, who picked Yash Dayal, and handed caps to Phil Salt and Tim David

Kane Williamson on what it takes to be a good IPL captain
Toss Just like 17 years ago at the first-ever IPL match, RCB won the toss and asked KKR to bat first with rain and dew not ruled out at the IPL 2025 opener. RCB were hopeful of not allowing a repeat of a blowout on that night when Brendon McCullum set the tournament alight. This was the first time these two teams were kicking off the IPL season since 2008.Defending champions KKR had a new captain, and wore a new look, with at least the official team sheet not slating Sunil Narine as the opening batter. Wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock and left-arm quick Spencer Johnson made their KKR debuts, edging out Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Anrich Nortje, who was nevertheless named in the list of substitutes. Whether KKR were going to open with Narine was going to be revealed in earnest.RCB’s new captain, Rajat Patidar, got off to an auspicious start, calling correctly at the toss. He didn’t quite remember the names of the possible Impact Players, but made what is expected to be the beneficial call in evening games in T20 cricket: chase. However, there was a new aid for the sides defending – a ball change they can claim after the tenth over of the second innings.RCB handed caps to Phil Salt, who represented KKR last year, and Tim David, let go by Mumbai Indians. Suyash Sharma and Krunal Pandya were their spinners, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who had a minor injury, missed out.
With a 100% record to maintain, Liverpool travel to newly-promoted Burnley as the undeniable favourites and a certain Alexander Isak lying in wait to make his debut.
Burnley vs Liverpool team news
If Burnley are anything as resolute as they were against Manchester United before the international break, then a shock may still be on the cards. Alas, there is no denying that the prospect of squaring off against the Premier League champions is a different challenge entirely to the Red Devils these days.
Whilst there’s no guarantee that Scott Parker will field the same side as that cruel late defeat against Man United, injury doubts for Jordan Beyer and Connor Roberts, who may join Zeki Amdouni on the treatment table, could yet force his hand.
The Burnley boss told reporters when asked about the challenge that lies ahead in his pre-match press conference: “For us it comes down to control and courage.
“Control in how we play and react in every moment, and courage to step forward and back ourselves against the champions. We’ll need to be disciplined and composed, keep calm in certain moments. And we’ll need to be brave and believe in each other, which is something this squad has in abundance.”
As for the Premier League champions, the mood in their camp couldn’t be much better. New signing Isak is finally a Liverpool player and could be in contention to receive some minutes this weekend – although Arne Slot has urged fans to be patient as he gets up to speed.
The likes of Jeremie Frimpong and Joe Gomez could also complete their returns from injury, whilst the only fresh concern that the Reds have regards Curtis Jones.
The midfielder’s injury may see Dominik Szoboszlai return to his usual role in the middle of the park rather than right-back, where he thrived against Arsenal. And, in turn, Frimpong or Conor Bradley could get themselves an immediate start after the international break.

Burnley vs Liverpool recent results
Of course, the last time that these two sides met came in 2024 when Liverpool eased to a 3-1 victory at Anfield. Then, it was goals from the late Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez that saw the Reds wrap up all three points. This weekend, however, the Reds will need to rely on new stars to get the job done.

Without a defeat against the Clarets in their last five games, Liverpool last failed to beat Burnley in 2021 when their 68-game unbeaten run at Anfield came to an end in shocking fashion.
Away from head-to-head records, Burnley have endured an inconsistent start to their Premier League campaign – losing at Tottenham Hotspur, defeating Sunderland and then suffering defeat against Man United.
Liverpool, by some contrast, have won all three of their games but needed three late goals to do so. That, even if only small hope, should hand Burnley some encouragement.
Burnley vs Liverpool predictions and odds
As Premier League champions and the only side with a 100% record this season, Liverpool are undoubtedly the favourites against Burnley, with the odds reflecting that. The Reds are priced at 3/10 by the bookies, whilst the odds for Burnley to pick up a shock victory sit at 8/1 and a draw is priced at 9/2.

Although Slot’s side have needed late goals to survive a number of scares this season, their visit to Turf Moor should see the return of their dominance and perhaps even the true arrival of Florian Wirtz.
