BCCI to take call on Praveen's conduct breach

India seamer Praveen Kumar could be in trouble for a “serious” breach of the players’ code of conduct in a Corporate Trophy game

Praveen Kumar swore at an opposition batsman while playing in the Corporate Trophy•AFP

India seamer Praveen Kumar, who is on the comeback trail after missing most of the Ranji season due to the recurrence of a tennis elbow injury, could be in trouble for a “serious” breach of the players’ code of conduct in a Corporate Trophy game. The BCCI is expected to decide on what action, if any, is to be taken against him next week.On February 4, Praveen had sworn at an opposition batsman while playing for Oil and Natural Gas Limited (ONGC) in the Corporate Trophy: he hurled swear words at Income Tax batsman Ajitesh Argal despite the on-field umpires warning him. The umpires subsequently charged him for a code of conduct breach and match referee Dhananjay Singh found him guilty on two counts.According to the match referee’s report, which is in possession of ESPNcricinfo, Praveen pleaded guilty on both charges, under clause 2.2.8 and 2.4.2. “As per the BCCI guidelines, the penalty imposed for the offence is a 100% fine of the match fee under Level-2 (for repeating the offence within 12 months) and a serious warning not to indulge in such acts in future. For the other offence, you are charged during the same ball. The matter has been referred to chief administrative office [CAO] of the BCCI for further action, since it is charged under Level-4,” Dhananjay Singh wrote in his report, which was submitted to the BCCI.As per the BCCI procedures, after the report has been submitted, the CAO is supposed to take a call on the matter within seven days. So, Ratnakar Shetty is expected to decide on how the case will move forward during the coming week. If Praveen, who is contracted with the BCCI, is found guilty, he could be banned for up to four matches.”Whatever the action or decision will be, the board won’t discuss it in public,” a BCCI official said.Besides submitting the report, Dhananjay Singh has also written a letter to BCCI’s game development manager, KVP Rao, questioning Praveen’s mental condition. He wrote: “I would like to report to you that at present Mr Praveen Kumar is not in a mental frame to play the game. He is very aggressive and gets hostile with little trigger. He is very abusive and passes very filthy comments to his own team-mates, opponents and even to spectators. During the first match also (ONGC v CAG on February 1) he had a spat with spectators at the international stadium in Raipur. It was told to me by the other match referee Mr Prakash Bhatt. Even his own team-mates are keeping some distance from him.”The episode highlighted Praveen’s tendency to lose his temper frequently. In 2008, he had allegedly come to blows with a doctor during a fracas in Meerut, his hometown. During India’s tour to the West Indies in 2011, Praveen was involved in a spat with spectators in Port of Spain. Soon after, during the series in England where he proved his worth as a Test bowler, he had reacted angrily to fans’ taunts during a tour game in Northamptonshire.

Cook recognises size of task

England captain Alastair Cook said his team will have to improve a lot to pull off another long-awaited series win

Alan Gardner10-Jan-2013Somewhere between Alistair Cook’s admission that defeat in England’s two one-day warm-up games was “not an ideal start” and his reference to the Champions Trophy, to be held in England in June, as “high on our priorities” it was possible to sense what the five-match ODI series against India means. With the commencing of England’s split coaching arrangement – Ashley Giles taking over from Andy Flower in charge of the limited-overs sides – an inexperienced squad and a recent one-day record in India featuring far more winces than wins, Cook will be looking for incremental gains in a testing environment. England’s last – and only – ODI series win in India came in 1984-85 and although Cook led his team to a first Test series victory in 28 years last month, a history-making repeat would be even more outlandish.England enter the series as the No. 1-ranked ODI side, after winning 12 of their 14 completed matches in 2012, but they were whitewashed 5-0 on their last two visits to India, in 2011 and 2008, and lost 5-1 in 2006. If England returned to India last week full of festive cheer, following their success in the Tests and a last-ball win to draw the T20 series before Christmas, it was rudely knocked out them by defeats to India A and Delhi. Cook was spared watching both by a bout of illness that kept him out of the first match but acknowledged England must work hard to compete.”I didn’t see the first game and in the second game I think we improved a lot,” Cook said. “For us to win, I think, it showed the challenge we are going to have in our hands. Our skill levels will need to improve a lot. It’s going to be hell of a challenge, like the Test series in a way. We have to do something that no English team has done for a while.”Although England’s batsmen faltered chasing 229 against India A, with only Ian Bell making a significant contribution, and then the bowlers not defending 294 against Delhi, Cook had only positive things to say about Giles’ initial impact on the squad. “He has done well, it’s obviously been testing conditions for him so far. It’s very early days but he has done well. These things take time for him to get used to everyone but I think he is an excellent coach.”The surface at Rajkot is likely to be conducive to run-scoring and while there may not be much green on the pitch, there will be more than a tinge of it to England’s attack, which is missing James Anderson, Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad. Despite the new ODI rules on bouncers and fielders in the circle and the pace at England’s disposal, particularly in the shape of Steven Finn and Stuart Meaker, Cook said it was important that his bowlers did not get carried away.”I think in these conditions, these rules will have less of an impact than say in Australia or England on bouncier pitches,” he said. “I captained the other day and having five men up was obviously different. And it’s tough to bowl on these wickets, there is always a boundary option with the other man up. It’s about trying out your skills and trying to make it as hard as possible for the opposition to get that boundary.”There is very little margin for error. We found that out the last time we were here and in the two warm-up matches. Here, you get punished if you are off line and length. So that’s tough on bowlers in these conditions and these quick outfields as well, there are going to be high-scoring games. We’ve got to try and nail those skills and keep those freebies down as much as you can.”We have got an inexperienced side, a few experienced players missing through injuries and rotational policy. So, it will be a real big test to us as players and real good test to these guys who have been around now a bit on the international scene to try and step up.”But for all the talk of taking early wickets, keeping it tight and developing strength in depth, England are already looking beyond this series. Cook, a man once considered unsuited to ODI cricket, is now in charge of a side that can approach the Champions Trophy with genuine hopes of winning the tournament and filling a significant gap in the cabinet. “I think it’s very important,” Cook said. “I don’t think we have won any 50-over ICC tournaments as an England side. So as a group of players, having returned home and in conditions which we are comfortable, we will try and win that. So, it’s very high on our priorities.”

Haryana shot out for 66 by Odisha

A round-up of the first day’s action of Group B matches in the Ranji Trophy

Haryana’s batsmen continued their horror run in the Ranji Trophy: two weeks after being shot out for 55 by Vidarbha, they crumbled to 66 all out against Odisha in Lahli. Astonishingly, they did put up a decent batting performance in between these two massive failures, posting 334 against England in a tour match.Odisha coming off a washout against Tamil Nadu and a resounding defeat against Delhi, had just the day they needed to start getting their campaign back on track. Basant Mohanty, their senior quick bowler, did much of the damage, finishing with five wickets as only two Haryana batsmen managed to make it to double digits – Abhimanyu Khod (12) and Rahul Dalal (21).Odisha capitalised on the advantage provided by their bowlers, reaching 177 for 6 with the help of 40s by their captain Natraj Behera and Biplab Samantray. Quick bowler Mohit Sharma turned in his best first-class figures of 4 for 37 to make sure Odisha didn’t completely run away with the game.
Scorecard
Tamil Nadu’s formidable top five faltered badly against Maharashtra in Chennai, but the home side were rescued by a trio of half-centuries from the lower-order. Less than a week after a high-scoring draw against Karnataka at the same venue, Tamil Nadu lost M Vijay and S Badrinath for ducks, and their other two big-name players – Abhinav Mukund and Dinesh Karthik – also couldn’t make much of a contribution.Baba Aparajith, one of the heroes of India’s Under-19 World Cup win, also fell cheaply, leaving Tamil Nadu at 87 for 5 in the first session. Fast bowler Shrikant Mundhe did the early damage, striking in each of his first three overs.Maharashtra who had had to wait 118 overs to get five wickets in their previous Ranji match, had as many wickets within 31 overs this time. If they were thinking of rolling over Tamil Nadu early, they were thwarted by a 110-run sixth-wicket stand between R Prasanna and Yo Mahesh, who went on to his highest first-class score. No. 8 Malolan Rangarajan then lifted Tamil Nadu towards 250 with his maiden first-class half-century.
Scorecard
Karnataka’s bowling had as many as three debutants but they didn’t fade against a strong Uttar Pradesh batting line-up that was fresh off making 669 for 7 against Maharashtra, and beating a full-strength Delhi outfit in the first round. Fast bowler HS Sharath had the best day of the trio, running through the middle order to finish with 5 for 60, to ensure Karnataka didn’t miss the services of the injured Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun. That UP didn’t have too bad a day despite the failure of Suresh Raina was thanks to the experienced Mohammad Kaif, who gritted it out for a patient century even as the rest of the specialist batsmen stumbled. They were reduced to 40 for 4 after the first hour, but with several lower-middle order batsmen chipping in with 20s and 30s, Kaif put together a string of partnerships that gave the UP score some respectability.
Scorecard
Delhi captain Shikhar Dhawan might begin to wonder whether his decision to field on a dead track was the correct one or not after Baroda reached 252 for 3 on the first day at the Feroz Shah Kotla with minimum difficulty.Baroda, led by their stand-in captain Ambati Rayudu in place of the injured Yusuf Pathan, showed that the conditions weren’t too tough at the Kotla. Rayudu ended the day on 83 and 25-year-old Abhimanyu Chauhan was with him on 82 to make it a long day for Delhi’s bowlers. For more, read the full report.

All-round SA A win tri-series

Colin Ingram’s third half-century in four games and Wayne Parnell’s late flourish helped South Africa A to emerge victors in a tight the tri-series final in Harare

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jul-2012
Scorecard
Colin Ingram’s third half-century in four games and Wayne Parnell’s late flourish helped South Africa A to emerge victors in a tight the tri-series final in Harare. Ingram, the most prolific run-getter in the series with 240 runs, scored 61 off 91 balls but Zimbabwe found a way back as South Africa lost quick wickets. However, Parnell, who came in a No. 8, drove South Africa home with a quick 30.Zimbabwe, who were put into bat, made slow progress for most of their innings after the openers departed with only 27 on the board. However, No. 6 Regis Chakabva’s 62-ball 51 towards the end pushed Zimbabwe towards a competitive total. His stands of 44 with Elton Chigumbura and 39 with Richmond Mutumbami stabilised the innings after half their side were out for 109 before important runs by the lower-order helped Zimbabwe to 199. Fast bowler Chris Morris and left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso took two wickets each with economy rates of 2.30 and 3.50 respectively.South Africa appeared to have the target in reach after a confident start. At 121 for 3, South Africa were in control, but four wickets for 40 runs gave Zimbabwe an opening. However, Parnell’s quick runs helped South Africa maintain their unbeaten run in the tournament.
