The ICC’s chief executives’ committee has instructed Sri Lanka Cricket and the Bangladesh Cricket Board to incorporate and implement anti-corruption codes for domestic cricket in line with the ICC’s international code. In the SLC’s case, it must comply with the rules before the Sri Lanka Premier League in August this year.In October 2010, the ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat had asked all ICC members to adopt a domestic anti-corruption code. This followed the spot-fixing controversy in June 2010 during a Test match between England and Pakistan at Lord’s. The PCB revised the code of conduct for its players later that same year, with a strong emphasis on anti-corruption. Cricket Australia, the ECB and the BCCI have taken steps to establish their own anti-corruption units to monitor domestic cricket in their respective countries. An ICC release said: “At the meeting, the CEC, after hearing that neither the BCB nor SLC have incorporated domestic anti-corruption codes, recommended that the ICC Board instruct these Boards to implement codes forthwith and, in the case of SLC, certainly before the start of the Sri Lanka Premier League Twenty20.”The cricket committee also asked the BCB to deliver a “comprehensive report” about allegations of corruption during the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League. Prior to the tournament, the former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza, who led the Dhaka Gladiators team, reported he’d been approached over spot-fixing. A Pakistani citizen, Sajid Khan, was arrested during the tournament, following a game between Chittagong Kings and Barisal Burners in Mirpur, in relation to match-fixing claims. The Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA), the players’ lobby in England, subsequently expressed concern over the organisation of the league. The cricket committee stated it “considered the importance” of having a uniform set of anti-corruption regulations across all Full Member countries to avoid inconsistency and any “potential jurisdictional loopholes”.

Pakistan win a thriller, Zol ton not enough for India

A round-up of the second day of matches at the Asia Cup 2012

India Under-19s almost pulled off a dramatic chase of 288 against Pakistan Under-19s but fell one run short at the Kinrara Academy Oval in Kuala Lumpur. Needing 17 to win off the final over, Rush Kalaria, who was batting on 24, started with a six but was caught at long-off off the next ball. Two boundaries and a single came off the next three, leaving India needing two off the final delivery. Mohsin Sayyed, however, could only drive it back to the bowler, giving Pakistan their second victory of the competition.Vijay Zol was unbeaten at the other end on 109. Zol’s stands with his captain Unmukt Chand and Akshdeep Nath were the backbone of India’s innings. He had also added 51 in five overs with Kalaria for the seventh wicket to keep up with the asking rate after India had lost 3 for 32 to slip to 226 for 6.Pakistan on the other hand paced their innings wel. A stand of 213 for the second wicket between Man of the match Sami Aslam, who scored 121, and Imam-ul-Haq, who scored 88, guided them to an imposing total. The group B contest between Sri Lanka Under-19s and Bangladesh Under-19s was not such a high-scoring match. Having made 363 against Qatar on the opening day, Bangladesh slumped to 83 for 8 in their chase of 184 and were finally bowled out for 140 after a 55-run stand for the ninth wicket. Sri Lanka’s spinner Amila Aponso took four wickets to rip through the Bangladesh middle order and he was well supported by offspinner Tharindu Kaushal, who took three wickets. It was a bowlers’ match and left-hand batsman Sandun Weerakkody was the only half-centurion, scoring 69. Bangladesh legspinner Noor Hussain took four wickets, and medium-pacer Dewan Sabbir three.Malaysia Under-19s were also bowled out for 140 by Nepal Under-19s and were beaten by 107 runs in their group A match. A five-wicket haul by Rahul Vishwakarma ensured the hosts were outclassed; they had been reduced to 111 for 8 at one stage.Nepal’s innings of 247 revolved around Sagar Pun, who had an 84-run partnership with R Pulami Magar and the first-wicket stand of 74 between Subash Khakurel and Pradeep Airee. Pun eventually made 71, enough for Nepal to put the game beyond Malaysia.Afghanistan Under-19s produced a commanding performance with bat and ball to thrash Qatar Under-19s by 191 runs. They amassed 308 and then dismissed Qatar for 117.Afghanistan had significant partnerships for the first and second wickets, and their middle order contributed as well. Shabir Noori and Noor-ul-Haq scored half-centuries but no one went on to make a hundred. After that batting performance, Javed Ahmedi, Noori and Aftab Alam ran through the Qatar line-up. A third-wicket partnership of 53 between Taha Muhammed and Tamoor Sajjad was the only stand of note as Qatar wickets kept falling at regular intervals.

Selectors to discuss ODI future with Younis Khan

Pakistan’s chief selector Iqbal Qasim has said the panel will discuss Younis Khan’s ODI future with him after the completion of the ongoing tour of Sri Lanka

Pakistan’s chief selector Iqbal Qasim has said the panel will discuss Younis Khan’s ODI future with him after the completion of the ongoing tour of Sri Lanka. Younis was left out of the fifth one-dayer, which Pakistan lost to concede the series 3-1, after making only 10 runs in three innings in Sri Lanka.Younis, 34, was dismissed for 5, 4 and 1 in the ODIs, falling to Thisara Perera twice and Nuwan Kulasekara once. He was part of the dramatic collapse that cost Pakistan the fourth match in Colombo, where they lost seven wickets for 13 runs. Younis had made only 67 runs in four innings during Pakistan’s previous one-day assignment, the Asia Cup in Bangladesh.”It’s the duty of the senior cricketers to lead the team, to carry the team and to drive it forward, but if one of your senior players is struggling then that puts pressure on the team,” Qasim told . “Let the tour of Sri Lanka finish and then we will definitely discuss his future plans with him [Younis]. Younis has of course already requested not to be selected in T20s, I don’t know what he has in mind regarding 50-over cricket.”I’m sure we will have an amicable chat about his future, as Pakistan needs him for Test cricket for the future. Experience is an invaluable commodity in cricket but you have to be out in the middle performing, which unfortunately Younis has not been doing in 50-over cricket of late.”Apart from Azhar Ali, who scored 217 at an average of 54, Pakistan’s batsmen struggled to post imposing totals in Sri Lanka. Qasim said their all-round performance had also been “below par”.”It’s difficult to put Sri Lanka under pressure in their conditions and the variable weather conditions did not make things easy for Pakistan either,” he said. “However we should not make excuses, the overall performance of the team was below par.”Qasim said the team lacked consistency in all disciplines, their performances veering from exceptional one day to ordinary the next. In the final ODI, Pakistan were shoddy in the field, with several dropped catches and missed run-out opportunities allowing Sri Lanka to win in the last over. “This inconsistency has been hurting Pakistan cricket for many years and it’s about time it was eradicated,” he said. “One day the fielding is outstanding, the next game it’s very poor and the boys are dropping simple catches. The same with the batting, one day it clicks, the next day it misfires.”Mohammad Sami is an example of this inconsistency, one day he bowls very well and helps the team to victory, the next day he bowls poorly and costs the team the game. It doesn’t matter what your game plan is going into the game – it’s very difficult to impose that game plan onto the opposition if you are inconsistent.”Despite the defeat in Sri Lanka, Qasim said the selectors would avoid making major changes for the series against Australia in August and the World Twenty20 in September. “You cannot chop and change ahead of a World Cup. There is no point selecting a player for a couple of games and then discarding him,” he said. “I think it’s too late to experiment now ahead of the T20 World Cup and I would expect that most of the personnel in the T20 squad in Sri Lanka recently will be retained.””I don’t think we should panic in this format and make major adjustments to the T20 squad. I think that slowly and gradually our philosophy in both the 50-over format and the twenty over format will bear fruit, but everyone has to be patient.”Edited by Carlyle Laurie

Afghanistan were outplayed by Netherlands in Sharjah, going down by nine wickets

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Mar-2012
ScorecardAfghanistan were outplayed by Netherlands in Sharjah, going down by nine wickets. A four-wicket haul by Peter Borren, the right-arm seamer, restricted Afghanistan to 153, before Alexie Kervezee smashed an unbeaten 83 to chase the target within 27 overs.Afghanistan lost the early wicket of Karim Sadiq, caught behind trying to pull Borren. Javed Ahmadi tore in to Mudassar Bukhari the following over, hitting him for a six and two fours. Ahmadi, however, didn’t last long as he became Borren’s second victim, caught at short midwicket off an inside edge to his pads. Borren was on a hat-trick when he trapped the captain Nawroz Mangal lbw. Afghanistan were in trouble at 54 for 4 before the tenth over and needed a recovery stand.Asghar Stanikzai and Mohammad Nabi then added 53 for the fifth wicket at just under four an over. Pieter Seelar, the left-arm spinner, broke the partnership when he had Stanikzai caught behind for 25. The boundaries dried up for Afghanistan and Samiullah Shenwari tried to slog but was caught at long-on, giving Borren his fourth wicket. Tom Cooper got rid of the top scorer Nabi for 41, also caught at long-on, before cleaning up the tail to finish with 3 for 11.Stephan Myburgh got Netherlands’ chase off to a good start, hitting three fours in the first over. Izatullah Dawlatzai got the only wicket to fall, getting Myburgh out leg before on 23. Michael Swart and Kervezee then combined to add 107 for the second wicket. Kervezee smashed 13 fours and a six in his 63-ball knock, while Swart was unbeaten on 42 with four fours and a six.

Jayawardene blames top order for loss

Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lanka captain, has blamed the failure of the top order for the defeat against Pakistan that has left them on the brink of elimination from the Asia Cup

Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lanka captain, has blamed the failure of the top order for the defeat against Pakistan that has left them on the brink of elimination from the Asia Cup. He and Tillakaratne Dilshan had provided a fast start, but Jayawardene holed out in the sixth over attempting to clear extra cover. Dilshan’s go-at-everything brand of batting led to the next wicket, as he top-edged a pull. Dinesh Chandimal fell to a wonderful slip catch by Younis Khan and Lahiru Thirimanne was dismissed chasing a wide one. On a good pitch, and after winning the toss, Sri Lanka were stumbling at 65 for 4, and they eventually limped to an insufficient 188.”I think it was quite obvious [where we failed]: with the bat,” Jayawardene said. “When you win the toss and bat first, the challenge is to get a good score on the board that the bowlers can bowl at; a par score on this track would have been around 250. We didn’t get anywhere near that. Our bowlers had to do something magical if we had to win from there. I thought they bowled really well, gave everything they had but it wasn’t good enough.”Jayawardene also stood by his decision to bat first, a move that was questioned because the pitches in Mirpur have appeared to be better for batting in the evenings. Jayawardene, though, said the pitch actually gets slower and that with the extra bowler – Lasith Malinga had replaced Chamara Kapugedara in the XI – Sri Lanka felt they could defend a decent total.”By playing the extra bowler, we could have defended a competitive total. But the wicket gets slower and slower as the day progresses, and we thought that if we scored 250-plus, it would have been hard for them to chase with six batsmen.”Kumar Sangakkara and Upul Tharanga, now a regular at No 6, added 96 valuable runs to rebuild the innings after the top-order troubles, but Sri Lanka lost their way again when Tharanga was dismissed off the first ball of the batting Powerplay.”Kumar [Sangakkara] and Upul [Tharanga] were batting well. But the sort of ball that Upul got, it wasn’t possible to take full toll of the Powerplay,” Jayawardene said. He also refused to use tiredness as a reason for Sri Lanka’s two losses in the Asia Cup – they had played five games in 10 days in Australia before coming to Bangladesh. If India beat Bangladesh on Friday, Sri Lanka’s last game against the hosts will become academic.Edited by Dustin Silgardo
