Rory Hamilton-Brown and Tom Maynard both hit half-centuries as Surrey made it three wins in three games as they claimed a 17-win over Leicestershire

Rory Hamilton-Brown and Tom Maynard both hit half-centuries as Surrey made it three wins in three games as they claimed a 17-win over Leicestershire in the Clydesdale Bank 40.While Hamilton-Brown and Maynard shone for the hosts at The Oval, Josh Cobb produced a fine all-round contribution for Leicestershire. Cobb, primarily a batsman, took two good wickets with his leg spin, held two stunning catches, one off his own bowling, and hit a rapid 45 but Leicestershire subsided to 189 all out in pursuit of a target of 207.Surrey had made a poor start on an Oval pitch lacking its usual pace, slumping to 45 for 3 before Hamilton-Brown and Maynard gave them some momentum in a fourth-wicket stand of 63 in 13 overs.Steve Davies gave Nathan Buck a simple return catch, Jason Roy skied Buck to midwicket and Zander de Bruyn miscued his third ball from Nadeem Malik to mid on and was caught by a leaping Wayne White at mid on.Even Hamilton-Brown and Maynard, both powerful strokemakers, struggled with their timing but Hamilton-Brown had made 57 off 61 balls with seven fours when he drove fiercely back down the pitch and Cobb held a stinging return catch.Matt Spriegel helped Maynard add 49 in 10 overs before Cobb had him caught at long off for 28 and Maynard had reached 55 off 71 balls with only two fours but 40 singles when he was bowled by Buck. Cobb took his third and best catch of the innings – a running, diving effort at long off to remove Yasir Arafat – but a brisk, unbeaten 26 from Chris Schofield lifted Surrey to 206 for eight. It did not seem to be enough when Cobb was launching Leicestershire’s reply with 45 off 36 balls, including seven fours, three of them off successive balls from Jade Dernbach, and a six, driven back over Arafat’s head. Then he pulled Gareth Batty’s third ball into the hands of midwicket and Leicestershire lost four wickets for 14 runs in seven overs.James Taylor was well caught by Davies, standing up, when he tried to cut De Bruyn, Will Jones, an Australia-born batsman making his debut, was leg before to Batty and Matt Boyce was caught at slip off Stuart Meaker. It was 111 for 6 when Jacques du Toit was brilliantly run out by Maynard’s direct hit and White was caught behind off Arafat but Paul Dixey kept Leicestershire’s hopes alive and they even had a chance of winning when Matthew Hoggard joined him in a ninth-wicket stand of 29 in three overs. Then Hoggard, who had hit three fours and a six, holed out at long on, Dixey was bowled by Meaker for a gallant 42 off 38 balls with six fours and Surrey won with nine balls to spare.

Shane Watson has questioned Tillakaratne Dilshan’s chances of forging a captaincy as successful as that of Kumar Sangakkara.

Shane Watson has fired an early salvo ahead of the Test series against Sri Lanka in August by questioning Tillakaratne Dilshan’s chances of forging a captaincy as successful as that of Kumar Sangakkara, his predecessor. The Australians will have a new captain themselves in the form of Michael Clarke, but his deputy Watson wondered aloud at Dilshan’s chances of emulating the results and the universal respect won by Sangakkara during his time as leader.”Kumar Sangakkara is as impressive a cricketer as there is in the world,” Watson told ESPNcricinfo. “He always handles himself so unbelievably well and he’s a brilliant cricketer also. So it’s going to be very hard for someone like Dilshan to live up to exactly what Kumar is as a person and also how he’s been in the captaincy, it’s going to be a big challenge for him.”Sangakkara gave up the job following the World Cup in order to prolong his playing career, leaving the captaincy in the hands of Dilshan, an undoubted talent but also a somewhat flighty performer at times during his Test career. He is also handicapped by being, at 34, a year older than the man he is replacing.Australia were fruitful in their efforts to unsettle Dilshan during the dual series away and at home in 2004, holding him to an average of 30.11, with one century, across five Tests. He was not selected in the Sri Lankan touring party that lost two matches in Australia in November 2007, instead leading the Sri Lanka A team to Zimbabwe. He has been appointed to lead the Sri Lankans on the tour of England that precedes the Australia series. The Sri Lanka series, Watson acknowledged, will be the first serious test of the new leadership axis after an undemanding first assignment in Bangladesh, where the modest hosts were swept aside 3-0 in as many limited-overs matches. “On our side of things we’ve got a big challenge as well with a new leadership group and us trying to rebuild and create a really exciting era of Australian cricket within our team.”Doubts will surround the composition of the squad as it is the first since the loss of the Ashes at home, and there are plenty of sound reasons for ushering the further regeneration of a squad that stagnated in Ricky Ponting’s final 18 months as captain. Watson, who had said the Ashes defeat would define the careers of several players “on the wrong side”, still felt there would be a selection reckoning for a series punctuated by three innings victories for England.”There’s no doubt the Ashes was there to be a defining moment for people’s careers in certain ways, and for some people it has been and others not so much,” Watson said. “Now there’s a new direction Australian cricket is heading in [and] it’s going to be interesting to see what happens over the next year or so. I really feel it’s going to be an interesting time to be able to start to generate a new era of Australian cricket, and I’m very thankful that I’m now part of the leadership group and want to be a part of creating something very special.”For so long a figure of sympathy and even occasional ridicule due to a seemingly endless string of injuries, Watson is now next in line for the captaincy behind Clarke, and is intent on sharing the hard lessons he learned while struggling over more than six years between his international debut and finally securing a Test spot of his own.”Looking back on things, I am very lucky to have been through the experiences I’ve had that turned me into the person and the cricketer I am now,” he said. “I suppose I’ve got a little bit to help younger guys coming through and improve them not only as people but also to help them make the most of playing the cricket they are as well.”

Richard Gould, the Somerset chief executive, will replace Paul Sheldon in the same position at Surrey
ESPNcricinfo staff07-Mar-2011Richard Gould, the Somerset chief executive, will replace Paul Sheldon in the same position at Surrey. Gould had been favourite for the role since Sheldon confirmed he was standing down after six years at Taunton where Somerset have been transformed on and off the field.Last season Somerset finished as runner’s up in the Championship, Friends Provident t20 and CB40 while financially they are also in a stable position while other counties struggle to make ends meet.”The role of chief executive of Somerset is one I have treasured and I hope I have lived up to expectations,” Gould said. “As a club, we have enjoyed some excellent times over the last six years and I owe an enormous debt of thanks to chairman Andy Nash for his constant support, as well as the club committee, the members, the players and the excellent staff. Somerset is a very special club.”I am excited at the challenge offered by Surrey and it is the only county that could have tempted me away from Somerset at this time. I was born in London when my Dad was playing football for Arsenal and I played at The Oval as a schoolboy, so it is another club with whom I have significant links. It is a big job and one that I am looking forward to getting to grips with.””Richard is a born leader. His term and contribution at Somerset speaks for itself,” Richard Thompson, the Surrey chairman said. “His commitment to cricket at all levels and strong commercial pedigree highlighted Richard as a standout candidate.”I look forward to working with Richard and feel confident his contribution will be significant in all aspects of Surrey cricket in the years to come. I would also like to thank Andy Nash and the Somerset committee for their co-operation in managing Richard’s departure in such an amicable and progressive fashion.”

Will two of these three play or only one?•AFP
Match FactsMarch 12, Nagpur Start time 2.30pm (0900 GMT)The Big PictureIndia haven’t lost a game yet but haven’t escaped the darts from the critics. Why hasn’t Harbhajan Singh taken wickets? Why Piyush Chawla? Why not R Ashwin? Why are the batsmen fumbling? Why do the fielders always fumble? Why is Zaheer Khan finding no support from other seamers? Why do they never bowl yorkers?South Africa have lost one game but that loss threw up the same old question. Why do they choke? The two pre-tournament favourites face each other on a batting track where conventional wisdom would dictate that the team with better bowling and fielding should prevail. However, on their day, both teams are inherently strong enough to beat any logic. Both teams have kept the team-sheet under wraps. Perhaps they really haven’t yet decided. The news from the South African camp offers hints but there is nothing conclusive. Imran Tahir is a doubtful starter but he is not ruled out. AB de Villiers’ back is better but it’s not sure whether he will keep. If he keeps, Morne van Wyk might lose his spot and they may toy with bringing Lonwabo Tsotsobe in. Johan Botha might replace Tahir. And so it goes on. The logic is easy to understand: It’s a batting pitch, so why not push AB to keep and play an extra bowler? If they hadn’t choked against England, that decision would have been far easier to make.India have their own puzzles to solve. MS Dhoni talked about going in with three seamers but he also said Ashwin might play. Barring Zaheer, India’s seamers haven’t really eased their captain’s headaches. Sreesanth was poor in the first game, Munaf Patel has looked fine but there is no guarantee that he won’t bleed runs if the batsmen take to him, and Ashish Nehra is yet to regain full fitness. Nehra was Dhoni’s go-to man under pressure but suddenly, in the middle of a mundane home ODI series against New Zealand in November 2010, his form gave away and he is yet to recapture it. The Ashwin-Chawla debate has been analysed to death and it will be interesting to see what unfolds tomorrow.Form guide(completed matches, most recent first)
South Africa LWWWW India WWTWL Watch out for…Virender Sehwag has gone relatively quiet after the first game but he can be expected to fire on a big stage. He has been over-aggressive in a couple of games but against South Africa he is likely to return to his pre-tournament mood of trying to play as many overs as possible.JP Duminy will be crucial for South Africa if they decide to go in with an extra bowler. In the recent few games, especially in the home series against India, he showed that he can shoulder the responsibility of leading the middle order. He might well be at the forefront when South Africa take their batting Powerplay and his battle against his nemesis Harbhajan could well be the key.Team newsHow the teams arrive at the final playing XI will give us an insight into their state of mind. Will South Africa attack with an extra bowler? Will India play an extra spinner? India (probable): 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni (wk/capt), 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ashish Nehra/Piyush Chawla/R Ashwin, 11 Munaf PatelSouth Africa(possible): 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers (wk), 5 JP Duminy, 6 Faf du Plessis, 7 Morne van Wyk/ Johan Botha, 8 Robin Peterson, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Lonwabo TsotsobeAs Graeme Smith said, they’ve been rolling it for four days. It will be hot and dry and dew is not expected to be a factor. Smith made it clear that the toss would have minimal effect.Stats and trivia Imran Tahir is the only South African bowler to take four or more wickets twice in a World Cup gameSachin Tendulkar has been out lbw 38 times in ODIs. Only Sanath Jayasuriya (47), and Inzamam-ul-Haq (39) have been dismissed more times. Quotes “I don’t think this is the be all and end all of the World Cup. This part is about qualifying and then going into the knockouts with some confidence. I hope it is another really good game for the World Cup..” . “If I have two bowlers who are giving 70 runs from 20 overs, I would be quite happy with them even if they don’t take wickets because ultimately the pressure turns on the batsmen to score runs in today’s format … Harbhajan is doing his job and if the batsmen are not willing to take risks, he is stopping the run-scoring opportunities and breaking the momentum.”
Sachin Tendulkar has singled out early acclimatisation to the South African weather as key to India’s performance on the tour, ahead of the first Test in Centurion on Thursday

Tackling the weather will be crucial, says Sachin Tendulkar•AFP
Sachin Tendulkar has singled out early acclimatisation to the South African weather as key to India’s performance on the tour, ahead of the first Test in Centurion on Thursday.”For me, one thing is very important and that is to get acclimatised to local weather conditions,” Tendulkar told . “Preparations have been spot on and the lengthy practice session has given us that opportunity (to get acclimatised). We have had good net sessions under the guidance of coach Gary (Kirsten).”The high-altitude conditions around Johannesburg – Centurion is about an hour’s drive away – posed a challenge, Tendulkar said. “While playing in Johannesburg you have to be extra-careful. It is a high-altitude area, so supply of oxygen is a bit of a problem.”When the tour starts and we step on the cricket field for the first time, we normally start running. While completing the first lap, one can easily feel that the body is not getting enough oxygen. Once you get used to those conditions there is no problem.”Adaptability to the quicker pitches was as much a test for the hosts as it was for India, Tendulkar said. “In South Africa, players and critics always talk about getting used to the pace and bounce of wickets here. For them, this is going to be the start of the season, so wickets are going to be a lot fresher.”
