Tamil Nadu, Mumbai struggle on opening day

Round-up of the first day of the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy Super League

Haryana continued their dream season after being promoted from the Plate League this year, surging to 293 for 2 on the opening day of their quarterfinal clash against Tamil Nadu at the Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium in Rohtak. On a track that was expected to aid seamers through the season, Tamil Nadu chose to field, but were left to rue their decision by stumps.Things began brightly for the visitors, with first-change seamer Sunil Sam removing Rahul Dewan in the eighth over. Thereafter, it was a long day of toil for Tamil Nadu as Nitin Saini and Sunny Singh ground their attack with centuries. Tamil Nadu did not make matters easy for their bowlers; two of their most senior players – Dinesh Karthik and S Badrinath – dropped Saini on 11 and 28 respectively. The second-wicket pair raised 241 before R Ashwin got rid of Sunny for 102, his tenth first-class ton. Ankit Rawat saw away the last nine overs of play with Saini, who marched on to 137 off 283 balls. With a batsman of Hemang Badani’s pedigree to follow, Haryana have the opportunity to raise a really big score and put the more-fancied Tamil Nadu under pressure over the course of the match.Pankaj Singh was not overawed by defending champions Mumbai, taking six wickets as Rajasthan dismissed the visitors for 252 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Pankaj struck almost immediately after Mumbai chose to bat, trapping Onkar Gurav lbw for no score. He followed that up by bowling Sahil Kukreja for 10 and three overs later, when Sumit Mathur bowled former India opener Wasim Jaffer, also for a duck, Mumbai were in some trouble at 53 for 3. Rohit Sharma could only make 21 before becoming Pankaj’s third wicket, and Ajinkya Rahane, who had batted for two and half hours, then fell to Deepak Chahar for 60, leaving Mumbai gasping at 116 for 5.Former India allrounder Ajit Agarkar and Abhishek Nayar attempted to rescue their side, adding 61 for the sixth wicket, but Pankaj struck again to remove Agarkar for 36 and Iqbal Abdulla for 5, to earn his fourth five-wicket haul of the tournament. Chahar chipped in again with the wicket of Nayar, who also 60. Ramesh Power hung around to make 25 before becoming Pankaj’s final wicket, giving the seamer figures of 6 for 64. Aakash Chopra, fresh off a triple-hundred, and Vineet Saxena then took Rajasthan to 17 for no loss.Munaf Patel helped give Baroda the upper hand against Railways at the Moti Bagh Stadium in Vadodara, taking four wickets as the visitors slumped to 181 for 8, before Yere Goud and Nileshkumar Chauhan staged a mini-recovery to carry their side to 241 at the close of play. Railways surprisingly opted to open with left-arm spinner, Murali Kartik, but the move paid off as he went on to make a fluent 57, striking nine fours and two sixes. His dismissal to Yusuf Pathan, who has had a great season with the ball, however, triggered a collapse, with 109 for 2 quickly becoming 125 for 7. Munaf picked up three of the wickets to fall, having Prashant Awasthi caught for 34 before bowling Mahesh Rawat for 5 and Dhiran Salvi for a duck. Jai Prakash Yadav then joined hands with Goud to add 56. Left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt snapped up Yadav for 42, but Chauhan resisted stoutly for 87 minutes and remained unbeaten on 31, while Goud’s three-and-a-half-hours vigil yielded 44.Karnataka’s bowlers proudced an all-round display to knock over Madhya Pradesh for 200, with only opener Jalaj Saxena’s half-century proving to be any resistance at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. Saxena and Naman Ohja put on 42 for the first wicket, and appeared to have things under control, but Vinay Kumar got Ohja to edge one behind. Mohnish Mishra was then caught and bowled by Sunil Joshi for 14, before Devendra Bundela (7) and Abbas Ali (0) fell in quick succession.Saxena then became one of Sreenath Aravind’s three victims, having made 73, to leave MP stuttering at 118 for 5. Ankit Sharma provided some lower-order impetus, making an unbeaten 41, but got little support from the rest of the batsmen. Aravind ended with 3 for 35, while Joshi and Vinay picked up two wickets apiece. Robin Uthappa and KB Pawan then guided the visitors to 35 for 0.

Spurs plotting Milinkovic-Savic swoop

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian media outlet Noi Biancocelesti (via Sport Witness), who claim that Antonio Conte would love to bring the Lazio midfielder to north London this summer, with the 52-year-old said to have been incredibly impressed by the 27-year-old after facing him on numerous occasions during his time at Inter Milan.

However, the report goes on to state that the likes of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester United are also interested in the Serbia international, with the latter even believed to have submitted a £68m offer.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

On Lazio’s part, it is said that club president Claudio Lotito is willing to listen to all offers for the midfielder, in the hope that something of a bidding auction is launched for the former KRC Genk starlet.

The next Dembele

While Milinkovic-Savic has been an extremely consistent performer for Lazio ever since his €9m (£7.5m) move to the Stadio Olimpico back in the summer of 2015, the box-to-box midfielder has undoubtedly taken his game to another level this season.

Indeed, over his 34 Serie A appearances this term, the £63m-rated Serbian has been in breathtaking form, scoring ten goals, registering 11 assists and creating ten big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.0 shots, making 1.3 key passes and completing 1.2 dribbles per game.

The £95k-per-week talent has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 1.0 interceptions, 1.9 tackles, 49.7 passes, 1.2 clearances and winning 7.1 duels – at a success rate of 52% – per fixture.

These returns have seen the player who David Amoyal dubbed “unreal” average a quite astonishing SofaScore match rating of 7.29, not only ranking him as Maurizio Sarri’s best performer in the Italian top flight but also the fifth-best midfielder and the tenth-best player overall in Serie A as a whole.

As such, being a player who is deadly in the final third, accomplished with the ball at his feet and extremely strong in the tackle, should Fabio Paratici and Conte go on to secure a deal for Milinkovic-Savic, they could well have landed Tottenham’s next Mousa Dembele – a player who possessed an extremely similar skill-set to that of the Lazio dynamo.

Indeed, it would certainly appear as if the 27-year-old would make a fantastic addition to Conte’s current options in the middle of the park, however, with United, Madrid, Munich, PSG and Juve all believed to be keen on the 30-time capped international, Paratici will certainly have his work cut out if he is to land Milinkovic-Savic this summer.

AND in other news: Conte now plotting THFC bid for “refreshing” £34m-rated gem, he’d be a “great signing”

Rangers played a blinder over Joe Aribo

Under Steven Gerrard, Rangers made some excellent signings that made up the backbone of the team which eventually won their first Premiership title in a decade last year.

One of these was Joe Aribo, who was incredible during the undefeated league season and has also been a key player this term as a historic run to the Europa League final has got Gers fans everywhere dreaming of continental glory.

The 25-year-old signed for Rangers in the 2019 summer transfer window on a free transfer, but the club had to pay £300k due to cross-border transfer rules. His market value currently sits at a whopping £9m, so the Gers still have the ability to make a stunning profit on the player.

With Aribo’s contract due to expire at the end of next season, Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be aiming to tie down the Nigeria international to a long-term deal in order to stave off potential Premier League interest.

His performances this season have been excellent, especially prior to the New Year, and despite Rangers falling away domestically after the winter break, the club’s European run will surely inflate fees for the likes of Aribo.

Among positional peers in Europe’s top leagues, the £45k-p/w star sits in the 99th percentile for aerial duels won (3.22) and the 97th percentile for interceptions (1.88), illustrating that his all-round game is one of the finest in the country.

His attacking abilities have also been demonstrated during the current campaign, as he has contributed eight goals and ten assists in 54 matches in all competitions so far.

Former Charlton team-mate and now Aston Villa regular Ezri Konsa previously lavished praise on Aribo, dubbing his playing style “unique”, and that comment is fair. The 25-year-old makes the Rangers team better when he plays and offers a different dynamic to Van Bronckhorst’s side.

There’s no guarantee that the 25-year-old will be in Scotland next season given the aforementioned transfer interest, but whatever happens over the summer, Rangers will be able to demand a huge fee for him. Either way, they hit the jackpot by picking up Aribo for a song three years ago.

Falta pouco: Igor Rabello avalia ataque e defesa do Botafogo

– Nosso time está encaixado, conseguindo jogar. No último jogo eles (Volta Redonda) tiveram chances. A gente tem trabalhado bastante a parte defensiva. No ofensivo, uma hora vai sair o gol – garante Rabello.

Qual seria a grande virtude do Glorioso até aqui?

-Complicado, lamentamos a perda dele.

Partida

O Lara jogando no erro, estatura baixa. Estamos vendo as equipes argentinas.

Newcastle: Howe drops update on Lewis

Eddie Howe has given a promising update on Newcastle United’s Jamal Lewis and his progress in his recovery from a long-standing groin problem.

What’s the latest?

The Newcastle manager took to his pre-match press conference ahead of the Norwich City clash on Friday, to reveal more information on Lewis’ condition.

Howe told the press (via Newcastle’s Twitter account): “He’s had a few operations and recently had another one. We hope this one has fixed his long-standing groin problem. It’s been frustrating for him because he’s not felt 100%. I’d love to see him back in pre-season and show us the player he can be.”

Howe will be buzzing

Lewis was cut from Newcastle’s 25-man squad in February to make way for new signings, so he will have the opportunity to really work on his fitness and recover ahead of pre-season when he can then start working on earning his place back in the team which will surely have Howe buzzing.

The 24-year old’s left-back position is currently being covered by Aston Villa loanee Matt Targett, and, despite many reports suggesting that the loan move will be made permanent this summer, The Athletic is now reporting that the Magpies manager is undecided on the signing.

When you compare the pair over their careers, Lewis has made 121 appearances, whilst Targett has made 130. Lewis has maintained a better pass accuracy and higher success rate in tackling than his position competitor, however, the 26-year-old offers more success in his dribbling and is more successful in winning aerial duels.

Even if Targett was to sign on a permanent deal, Lewis will still be needed to cover and rotate into the left defensive position, and considering how young he is, he is likely to be considered a long-term prospect in the position at St James’ Park.

Newcastle have almost completed their great escape from relegation this season securing 40 points in the Premier League table after a win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night and will take on Norwich City this afternoon at Carrow Road – with Howe surely hoping they can continue to climb the table into a comfortable position.

Spurs: Journalist drops big De Vrij update

Italian journalist Stefano Benzi has now shared a big live TV update on Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij, claiming Spurs are ready to make a significant bid.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye move…

The Netherlands international will be no stranger to Spurs supporters given he has been linked for a pretty long time.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Even before the new year, the Lilywhites held an intense interest in signing de Vrij for manager Antonio Conte – coming after the central defender’s pivotal role during Inter’s 2020/2021 title-winning campaign.

Football Insider, sharing news in late 2021, even revealed that the 30-year-old told friends he was interested in a January move to Spurs – unsurprising given Conte’s presence at N17.

De Vrij’s current deal at the San Siro expires in 2023, potentially giving transfer chief Fabio Paratici a boost for potential negotiations given Inter may need to contemplate selling while they still can.

The Latest: Benzi shares live TV update…

According to journalist Benzi, speaking live on Calciomercato.it TV, the Lilywhites are now ‘willing’ to table an ‘important figure’ of €40 million (£34m) for the Dutchman.

He explained: “There is a very serious interest on the part of both City and Tottenham for de Vrij and they are willing to spend an important figure: 40 million euros net.”

The Verdict: Right man?

There is little doubt Conte wants a new defender with reliable reports from The Telegraph and The Athletic both backing Tottenham’s intent to land a left-footed centre-back.

De Vrij for £34m arguably comes as a mixed bag, mainly due to his fairly seasoned age – a factor which could well mean he is hardly a long-term solution for Spurs at the back.

That being said, for around two to three seasons of Premier League action, Conte and Paratici could do far worse.

According to WhoScored, under Conte’s rule at Inter last year, he made more clearances per 90 than any member of the 52-year-old’s Scudetto-winners – all whilst proving to be a virtually untouchable member of the starting eleven.

He played the sixth-most Serie A minutes out of any Nerazzurri player over 2020/2021, leading to members of the press describing de Vrij as a ‘world-beater’ (ex-Leeds striker Noel Whelan, Football Insider).

Taking this into account, if Spurs can somehow whittle the £34m down a notch, he could be a shrewd summer capture.

In other news: Source: Tottenham edge closer to ‘top signing’, he really wants to join Conte! Find out more here.

West Ham: Moyes interested in Jovic

West Ham United are interested in a deal to bring Luka Jovic to the London Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report from Spain (via Sport Witness), who claim that David Moyes’ side will go head to head with Tottenham Hotspur in a bid to secure the signing of the Real Madrid centre-forward at the end of the current campaign.

The report goes on to state that the 24-year-old himself is desperate to depart the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, while Carlo Ancelotti is also more than willing to part ways with the Serbia international – with the LaLiga side reported to be demanding a €30m (£25m) fee for the striker.

Imagine him & Antonio

Considering West Ham’s rather desperate need for a new centre-forward this summer, with Michail Antonio having been the Premier League side’s only recognised senior striker ever since the sale of Sebastien Haller back in January 2021, it is not difficult to understand why Moyes would be interested in a move for Jovic ahead of the Hammers’ 2022/23 campaign.

While it is true that, following his €60m (£52.4m) move to Madrid back in the summer of 2019, Jovic has struggled to make any real impact at the Bernabeu – featuring for a grand total of just 1487 minutes, the equivalent of 16 and a half matches, over his near three-year spell in Spain – the 24-year-old has nevertheless proven previously just how talented a player he is.

Indeed, over his 32 Bundesliga appearances in his final campaign with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2018/19, the £16.2m-rated forward was in devasting form, scoring 17 goals, providing five assists and creating seven big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of three shots and making 0.9 key passes per game.

These metrics saw the player who Mladen Krstajic dubbed a “dangerous” talent average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.14, ranking him as his club’s third-best performer in the top flight of German football.

However, it was not only domestically that Jovic impressed that season, as the £152k-per-week hitman was also in deadly form over his 14 Europa League fixtures, bagging ten goals, registering one assist and creating two big chances for his teammates, with these returns seeing the Serbian – who Zvezdan Terzic predicted to “explode” back in 2014 – average a SofaScore match rating of 7.26.

As such, should Jovic be able to refind this level of form following a potential switch to West Ham this summer, alongside Antonio, Moyes will have finally formed an extremely dangerous attacking duo at the London Stadium – something that has been a huge issue for the Hammers over the last year and a half.
