Italian journalist Stefano Benzi has now shared a big live TV update on Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij, claiming Spurs are ready to make a significant bid.

Even before the new year, the Lilywhites held an intense interest in signing de Vrij for manager Antonio Conte – coming after the central defender’s pivotal role during Inter’s 2020/2021 title-winning campaign.

Football Insider, sharing news in late 2021, even revealed that the 30-year-old told friends he was interested in a January move to Spurs – unsurprising given Conte’s presence at N17.

De Vrij’s current deal at the San Siro expires in 2023, potentially giving transfer chief Fabio Paratici a boost for potential negotiations given Inter may need to contemplate selling while they still can.

According to journalist Benzi, speaking live on Calciomercato.it TV, the Lilywhites are now ‘willing’ to table an ‘important figure’ of €40 million (£34m) for the Dutchman.

He explained: “There is a very serious interest on the part of both City and Tottenham for de Vrij and they are willing to spend an important figure: 40 million euros net.”

The Verdict: Right man?

There is little doubt Conte wants a new defender with reliable reports from The Telegraph and The Athletic both backing Tottenham’s intent to land a left-footed centre-back.

De Vrij for £34m arguably comes as a mixed bag, mainly due to his fairly seasoned age – a factor which could well mean he is hardly a long-term solution for Spurs at the back.

That being said, for around two to three seasons of Premier League action, Conte and Paratici could do far worse.

According to WhoScored, under Conte’s rule at Inter last year, he made more clearances per 90 than any member of the 52-year-old’s Scudetto-winners – all whilst proving to be a virtually untouchable member of the starting eleven.

He played the sixth-most Serie A minutes out of any Nerazzurri player over 2020/2021, leading to members of the press describing de Vrij as a ‘world-beater’ (ex-Leeds striker Noel Whelan, Football Insider).

Taking this into account, if Spurs can somehow whittle the £34m down a notch, he could be a shrewd summer capture.

Michael Clarke, the Australia captain for the three-ODI series in India, has said his century in the second game in Visakhapatnam came as welcome relief following a disappointing performance in the Tests, where he managed just 35 runs in four innings.”My performance in the Test series was not anywhere near what I would have liked,” Clarke said on the eve of the third and final ODI in Margao. “I am disappointed with my own personal performance. It was very satisfying to make a hundred the other night. A close-in view of the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) during the Ashes this year may finally convince the BCCI to change its stance over using the technology that allows players to question and reverse dismissals. Board officials, accompanied by ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat, will travel to Australia to watch the use of the system during the upcoming Ashes series.After the ICC’s Board meeting this week, Lorgat said he “had agreed with Cricket Australia to attend the Ashes matches … with representatives of the BCCI, to understand the successful application of the technology and its contribution to correct umpiring decisions.”The entire exercise is meant to serve as a test run for the UDRS at the 2011 ICC World Cup – the ICC said India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, the three World Cup hosts, had confirmed that the system would be used at the tournament subject to the “reliability” of ball-tracking technology. The Hot Spot technology, which uses expensive thermal imaging cameras, would be used in the semi-finals and final only.The ICC executive Board also announced that it would try to find sponsors for the UDRS to cover its high cost. Member nations could either pool their UDRS sponsorship rights with the ICC, and so earn sponsorship revenues after deducting costs, or try to find independent sponsors themselves.The ICC would ideally like the Ashes inspection to lead to the BCCI finally accepting UDRS for India’s series. “We certainly hope so. There is so much agreement about the UDRS among other members and hopefully India feels it is time to look at it seriously again,” said an official. The BCCI officials heading for the Ashes to give the system a thorough once-over could be chosen from a select group, with one among BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, operations in-charge Suru Nayak and the board’s chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty most probably being on the visit.An ICC official admitted that the ball-tracking technology was “not 100% secure” but added that, “we have built in margins of error in the system. To overturn a decision, the third umpire would have to have a high degree of confidence.” There is also the likelihood of the Ashes television coverage using a slightly improved version of its ball-tracker technology as well as the Hot Spot. These are meant to be the two arguments which, the ICC are hopeful, will eventually change the BCCI’s mind.ESPNcricinfo has learnt that during the India-Australia Test series, there have been discussions between players, particularly the two captains, and officials, about the UDRS and the ball-tracking technology currently being used. Controversial decisions, against Gautam Gambhir, Ishant Sharma and Michael Hussey, during the Mohali Test certainly proved that the UDRS was missed at critical junctures.India’s doubts over the UDRS rest mostly on Hawkeye’s accuracy in the assumption of heights. The use of vector graphics for ‘projectile mapping’ – predicting the course of the ball – does not, its critics believe, take into account the variety of wicket conditions which changed daily.The ICC hopes that the next few months could be a ‘turning point’ for the UDRS. It maintains that studies have proved that the DRS system increases the percentage of correct decision-making from 92% to around 97%.A superior ball-tracker and a resolution over the Hot Spot cost issue could however lead to the system being used in India next season. That is, if the BCCI wants to find a way to squeeze in a home series in 2011, as the year is dominated by away tours for the Indian team.

The Verdict: Make a move?

The Premier League champions already have a wealth of talent at their disposal in midfield, but given they could sign him for just €40 million (£33m), it appears there is little financial risk for City.

Called ‘unbelievable’ by former teammate Goncalo Santos, the player’s WhoScored stats point to someone who could actually be of use in Guardiola’s unique false-nine system.

A superb ball-carrier, Nunes completes more dribbles per 90 on average domestically than any City star has in the Premier League – backing why they’re allegedly interested.

Given his quality and fairly cheap potential sum, the Sky Blues should at the very least consider a transfer this summer.

Rangnick gave an update on Matic in his pre-match press conference:

“We are grateful we have more players available, once again. Nemanja Matic was back training today for the first time and did quite well and might be available for Sunday against Leeds, if not the next two games.”

Bailly returns to full fitness after picking up an injury at AFCON, and Varane has recovered from a bout of illness ahead of the Brighton game at the beginning of the week, both have been in full training and will be available for selection.

Rangnick will be relieved

Despite the two teams having no league position rivalry currently in the Premier League, Rangnick will be relieved to have experienced players returning to the squad with the game against Leeds likely to be a hostile and physical affair. Despite that, this Manchester side should have enough quality to comfortably beat their injury-ridden opponents.

The German coach will also be relieved with Varane returning to the side just in time for the important Champions League round of 16 clash against Atletico Madrid that Man United face in just a few days, adding in invaluable European pedigree like the four-time Champions League winner, will be a huge boost for the side.

The Red Devils have the opportunity to pull away from West Ham and Arsenal by taking all three points from Elland Road today, which would put them four points clear in fourth as the top four race tightens in the remaining months of the season. Therefore, the idea of the likes of Varane coming back into the team will be a seismic lift to everyone associated with the club.

However, taming Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds side will be no easy feat for Rangnick and his crop of players, as fierce derby games are rarely based on form.
