Players not convinced by split innings

Cricket Australia could be sorely disappointed if it hopes its new split-innings format will eliminate the slow-moving middle overs from one-dayers

Cricket Australia could be sorely disappointed if it hopes its new split-innings format will eliminate the slow-moving middle overs from one-dayers. The concept was trialled in England’s county second XI competition this year and it often resulted in a cautious brand of “handbrake” batting at the end of the first innings and the start of the second.Cricket Australia’s format will give teams only 10 wickets across the entire match, so the first innings could be a grind as the top order builds a platform without losing too many batsmen. The Victoria legspinner Bryce McGain has been playing with Essex this month and said the feedback he received from the men involved in the county trial was that momentum was difficult to generate.”The tactics that they used here – and I spoke to quite a number of guys who experienced it – was that they really wound back those last four or five overs because they didn’t want to lose a wicket,” McGain told Cricinfo. “Then when you went back in, the batsmen had to get back in so it took four or five overs to get things started again.”The experience that the English players had was that when you’re building momentum it actually put a handbrake on. It will be interesting to see how it pans out. Maybe the Australians will do it tactically a little bit different, but it will certainly make it interesting.”The Australian board is adamant that moving to a split-innings 45-over format was prompted by feedback from the public, but the players remain unconvinced about the changes. The Australian Cricketers’ Association said 78% of its surveyed members were against the idea, and there have been mixed responses in the Twitter-sphere.Graham Manou, who took part in a split-innings practice match this week, wrote on his Twitter page: “Well I’m certainly going to need some convincing that the split 40 over games are good cricket and more importantly spectators.”One of Australia’s most successful one-day bowlers in recent history, Nathan Bracken, tweeted: “Not a massive fan of it. Could make some games very boring if a team gets a bad start.”But it was not all negative reaction from the players. Aaron Finch, the young Victorian batsman who established himself as a strong limited-overs cricketer last summer, wrote that the format was “Something new and exciting for both fans and players! Can’t wait”.One of the major sticking points for Australia’s ODI players is the decision to implement the new format a few months before a 50-over World Cup. Australia’s World Cup squad will be announced in December, before the seven-match one-day series against England, meaning that fringe players have virtually no chance to press their claims in the regular format.During the planning stages, Michael Hussey was a vocal critic of the move and last month he questioned Cricket Australia’s timing. After the Lord’s Test against Pakistan, the Australian squad was briefed by James Sutherland on some of the possible changes, which were at that stage unconfirmed.”We’ve got to be a little bit careful,” Hussey said in July after the briefing. “We’ve got to make sure we try and get as many players prepared for the 50-over World Cup as we can. I’m not sure the timing is great. There’s a lot of young guys out there that would see themselves as a chance of making the World Cup squad and they probably need as much exposure to 50-over cricket as possible.”

Nunes makes Man City transfer decision

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, via Sport Witness, some major Man City transfer news has emerged involving Sporting Lisbon star Matheus Nunes.

The Lowdown: Guardiola blown away…

After Pep Guardiola’s side hammered Sporting 5-0 away in the first leg of their Round of 16 Champions League Round tie, one opposition player who seemingly blew away City’s boss was in fact Nunes.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-newest-updates/” title=”Man City newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Speaking to media afterwards, the Sky Blues head coach lavished praise on Sporting’s in-demand midfielder, even going on to claim he is ‘one of the best players in the world today’.

Guardiola’s rave review of the 23-year-old has prompted links to signing him in the summer window with A Bola (via SW) now sharing a promising transfer development out of Eastlands.

The Latest: Man City hold discussions…

According to their sources, City chiefs have apparently held ‘informal’ discussions with Sporting over a transfer for Nunes.

In perhaps the most exciting part of this story, the player himself is very keen on moving to Manchester, with there even being suggestions he ‘dreams’ of signing for Guardiola.

It’s also pointed that both Sporting and City’s ‘privileged relationship’ could boost them further in an attempt to land Nunes.

The Verdict: Make a move?

The Premier League champions already have a wealth of talent at their disposal in midfield, but given they could sign him for just €40 million (£33m), it appears there is little financial risk for City.

Called ‘unbelievable’ by former teammate Goncalo Santos, the player’s WhoScored stats point to someone who could actually be of use in Guardiola’s unique false-nine system.

A superb ball-carrier, Nunes completes more dribbles per 90 on average domestically than any City star has in the Premier League – backing why they’re allegedly interested.

Given his quality and fairly cheap potential sum, the Sky Blues should at the very least consider a transfer this summer.

Pollard committed to West Indies cause

Kieron Pollard has reiterated his commitment to West Indies despite becoming a Twenty20 cricketer for hire as he travels the world playing the shortest format

Kieron Pollard has reiterated his commitment to West Indies despite becoming a Twenty20 cricketer for hire as he travels the world playing the shortest format. However, the allrounder added that drastic changes were needed to the way the game was run in the Caribbean.Pollard drew an angry response from the West Indies Cricket Board after he declined a place on the A-team tour of England in favour of his Friends Provident t20 deal with Somerset, but he believes he was completely within his rights to make that decision because we wasn’t on a retainer contract with the WICB.”I don’t want go into that too much, it’s a fairly unique situation I found myself in,” he told Cricinfo. “Things haven’t gone smoothly in West Indies in recent times and a lot of things need to be fixed. But it was about me being a professional sportsman and I will always be committed to the West Indies team whenever I am called up.”It’s my dream to play Test cricket and that will never change,” he added. “At the moment it is Twenty20 which has presented itself as my opportunity, but if the chance comes to put the whites on that will be a dream. I’m still young and would love to play for West Indies in all formats.”Pollard has been a great success at Somerset with 248 runs at a strike-rate of 177.14 and has claimed 20 wickets at 12.45, but he added the results of his county stint have no bearing on how he feels about shunning West Indies A. “I would have stood by my decision even if I hadn’t performed well for Somerset. At the end of the day the decision has been made and I will stick by it.”He has certainly left a mark around the county scene. On his debut against Middlesex, at Lord’s, he hit 89 off 45 balls which included a mighty six onto the roof of the pavilion. “It was big,” he said. “I don’t know how many metres, but it was a great start.”Pollard has taken his Twenty20 skills around the world over the last year. He was an overseas player for South Australia, has an IPL contract with Mumbai Indians and now can also add Somerset to that list. In a few weeks the West Indian domestic Twenty20 begins and, depending on his county commitments, Pollard is due to appear for Trinidad and Tobago.”It’s just the way it has happened for me,” he said. “I’m not contracted by West Indies and the Twenty20 format is something that suits my game. I don’t know how many more will follow, but some players might think of it as an option.”Trinidad and Tobago are the leading Twenty20 side in the region and will be early favourites to reach the Champions League which will be staged during September in South Africa. That would leave Pollard having to chose between his IPL team and his home team having already told South Australia he won’t play for them.”I’m looking forward to playing for Trinidad and qualifying for the Champions League,” he said, “and if that situation arises then I’ll make the decision who to play for. I’m going to give my all for Trinidad and Tobago.”Kieron Pollard is playing for Somerset in the Friends Provident t20. Batty and Hamilton-Brown seal thumping victory

Middlesex’s Adam-Gilchrist inspired resurgence came to an abrupt end as they disappointed a big Lord’s crowd with an abject batting performance against local-rivals Surrey

Middlesex’s Adam Gilchrist-inspired resurgence came to an abrupt end as they disappointed a big Lord’s crowd with an abject batting performance against local rivals Surrey.Following Gilchrist’s elevation to captaincy, Middlesex have won three games on the bounce but today it was a captain at the opposite end of his career, 22-year-old Rory Hamilton-Brown, who impressed ending unbeaten on 73 to seal a comfortable nine-wicket victory. For the crowd who arrived at a sun-drenched Lord’s to see one of the season’s marquee fixtures, it was a drab show. Plenty was expected from the big-hitting and big-money Australian duo of Gilchrist and David Warner but the crowd were instead treated to a farcical spectacle where Owais Shah had to decline singles throughout the last five overs in order to protect No. 11 Pedro Collins and see out the 20 overs. Thanks to an array of thoughtless shots from those around him, Shah had little choice. The pitch may have offered some spin but the Middlesex batsmen could only blame themselves as they came and went in a procession. The innings brightly when Warner muscled successive fours and then a six, scattering the crowd in the second tier of the stands at midwicket, off Andre Nel’s first over. But two balls later he was out, miscuing an ugly heave to Andrew Symonds at cover, which set a suicidal tone that Middlesex were unable to escape from.Gilchrist was marooned at the non-strikers end, facing one ball in the first three overs, and watched a skittish innings from Neil Dexter come to a predictable end when an ambitious drive off Chris Tremlett skewed gently to mid off. When he finally did get to face, Gilchrist picked up a length ball on leg stump off Tremlett and deposited it into the midwicket crowds. Two overs later, however, it was all over has he top-edged a sweep down to long on to become the first of four victims for Gareth Batty.Wobbling at 48 for 3, the home side needed a period of quiet consolidation. Instead there were two soft dismissals as Dawid Malan and Scott Newman donated their wickets to Symonds. It left Shah watching the lower order fall and he was unable to either work twos or find the boundary in the closing stages, as the last five overs yielded a paltry 25.Though early wickets may have given Middlesex hope, especially since Surrey’s batting has been insecure all season, they never looked in contention. Gilchrist tried all he could to rouse his men; cajoling, clapping and reprimanding endlessly, but was unable to sprinkle his stardust on any of the bowlers.Instead Hamilton-Brown played an array of crisp drives and pulls, including a six that matched Warner’s for power and distance, rocketing into one of the corporate boxes. Steven Davies offered a glimpse of his good form this season, hitting a front-foot pull through mid on off Collins that was almost reminiscent of the Middlesex captain, before limply chipping Tom Smith’s left-arm spin to cover. With 50 up by the end of the Powerplay, Hamilton-Brown and Mark Ramprakash could afford to knock the ball around quietly. There was a three-over period which cost just 13 when Shaun Udal partnered Smith, but just when Middlesex threatened to build some pressure, Hamilton-Brown broke the shackles with a six that cleared long off. From then on the game was a formality. In a chanceless 96-run stand with Ramprakash, Hamilton-Brown passed fifty off 36 balls and fittingly thumped an extra-cover drive to seal victory with three overs to spare.

Celtic: Ange drops Juranovic update

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has dropped a promising update on the condition of Josip Juranovic.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by The Celtic Way, the 56-year-old Bhoys boss revealed that the right-back missed the Hoops’ 3-2 victory over Aberdeen on Wednesday evening as a result of illness, before going on to suggest that the 26-year-old could be in line to make a return to first-team action this weekend, and if not, the Europa Conference League clash against Bodo/Glimt next week.

When asked about the Croatia international’s absence, the Greek-Australian manager said: “He’s got an illness mate. [He’ll be back at] the weekend, hopefully, and if not he will definitely be back for the midweek fixture next week.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how important a part of the Celtic squad Juranovic has become since his £2.5m move to Parkhead last summer, the news that the defender does not look as if he will be sidelined for any real length of time is sure to have left the Bhoys fanbase buzzing.

Indeed, over his 20 Premiership outings this season, the £3.6m-rated Croatian has helped his side keep eight clean sheets, scored two goals and created four big chances for his teammates, in addition to making an average of 1.4 key passes, one interception, 1.6 tackles, 1.5 clearances and winning 3.1 duels per game.

These returns have seen the 26-year-old average a rather extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 7.25, ranking him as the joint tenth-best player in the top flight of Scottish football this term.

As such, it is clear for all to see that the return of the £16k-per-week Juranovic will come as a massive boost to Postecoglou and his side, particularly with the European clash with Bodo/Glimt coming up for the Hoops next week.

NUFC: Waugh drops big update on defender

A big Newcastle United transfer update has emerged on the final day of the January window regarding the future of Jamal Lewis.

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh, the Magpies are set to sanction a temporary exit for the former Norwich academy product.

He tweeted: “Another outgoing possibility for #NUFC before window closes is Jamal Lewis, whose opportunities will be limited by Matt Targett’s arrival. It’s understood #NUFC will let Lewis go out on loan, but unsure where yet.”

Deadline day error

PIF are heading for a deadline day error with this decision to allow the Northern Ireland international to leave the club on loan.

Prior to his recent injury, he showed signs of promise at left-back. In the 1-0 win over Burnley (one of only two Newcastle victories in the league this season), the defender recorded a solid SofaScore rating of 7.0. He won five of his nine ground duels in that game whilst making an impressive four clearances, one interception, one block and four tackles throughout the clash, as per SofaScore.

At the age of 24, he also has plenty of time left to develop his game. This means that he could benefit from a direct battle with seemingly impending arrival Matt Targett for the left-back spot, and it could push both of them on to improve themselves, whereas that may not be the case with Matt Ritchie.

The 32-year-old Scot has been poor this season in the Premier League, and fans will surely be frustrated if he ends the window as the back-up to Targett instead of Lewis. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.66 in the Premier League this term, showing that he has been able to deliver consistently reliable performances in the Newcastle side, which is why supporters will surely not want to see him kept in place of the ex-Canaries defender.

Therefore, PIF would be making a glaring deadline day error if they sanction an exit for Lewis instead of trying to cash in on Ritchie. Eddie Howe could enjoy having Targett compete with the Northern Irishman at left-back as it could give him plenty of options from which to choose, rather than hoping that the former stays fit so that Howe is not forced to call on the veteran ex-Bournemouth player.
