Journalist talks up Leeds’ move for Nandez

Nahitan Nandez would be ‘one of the signings of the summer’ if Leeds United manage to snap him up, according to journalist Conor Clancy.

The Lowdown: Leeds linked with Nandez move

The Whites have been linked with a number of players during the summer transfer window, but Nandez’s name has appeared in more stories than most.

The Cagliari midfielder has been tipped to come in and bolster Marcelo Bielsa’s options in the middle of the park, having won 41 caps for Uruguay.

The Latest: Journalist excited by potential move

Speaking to Football FanCast, Serie A expert Clancy, editor at Forza Italian Football, spoke about Nandez’s quality and said he would be a fantastic signing for Leeds:

“If Leeds could get him, that would be one of the signings of the summer in the Premier League.

“But I do see it as increasingly unlikely that the deal will be done now.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-11/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Would be a huge coup

It doesn’t look likely that the Whites will get their man this summer, as Clancy alludes to – Inter Milan seem to be front-runners – but they should keep trying to sign the 25-year-old.

Nandez registered two goals and assists apiece in Serie A last season, but it is off the ball where he arguably stands out most, averaging 1.8 tackles and 1.5 clearances per game.

The Uruguayan could be a strong alternative to Kalvin Phillips, or someone who could partner him in midfield. The England international is such a crucial component for Bielsa but there are fears he may be relied upon too much, so we feel Leeds should pull out all the stops to sign Nandez.

Robinson drops Nuno claim at Spurs

Speaking to Football Insider, pundit and Sky Sports regular Paul Robinson has dropped a claim involving Nuno Espirito Santo as Tottenham Hotspur allegedly eye him as a candidate.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing Nuno…

After failed Tottenham talks for Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso, the Lilywhites have turned their focus to other targets.

Some names from the original shortlist have reappeared, like Brighton boss Graham Potter for example, but names like Nuno are now being considered with Tottenham’s options growing thin.

Indeed, Football Insider recently claimed that Spurs have now turned to the 47-year-old as a candidate as they plot talks behind the scenes.

The Latest: Robinson shares what he’s heard…

Speaking to Football Insider, in reaction to this development, former Spurs keeper and Sky regular Robinson has made a claim involving Nuno from his ‘sources’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Apparently, the Portuguese could demand as much as 15-20 backroom staff for the manager’s job.

“He has held talks with Crystal Palace and Everton as well but that has fallen through so something isn’t right there,” explained the ex-England international.

“I heard from my sources that he wants 15 or 20 backroom staff members coming with him but I cannot see that happening at Spurs because Daniel will not want to do that because it will be very expensive.

“There is a particular structure now at Spurs with Paratici coming in. If he wasn’t succeeding at Wolves, why would Tottenham turn to him?”

The Verdict: Intriguing claim…

This information that Nuno could demand a plethora of staff comes as intriguing, especially when you consider the differences Tottenham had with Conte in regards to backroom numbers.

Lauded as a ‘fantastic’ boss by Eygpt international Hassan ‘Kouka’ Ahmed (BBC), who worked with him at Rio Ave, Spurs must still carefully consider Nuno despite the Robinson reveal.

Tottenham are running out of time with non-international players set to return for pre-season training as soon as July 5 and chairman Daniel Levy simply must make a decision soon.

Kenwright wants Moyes at Everton

Many Everton fans have been left to slam Bill Kenwright’s ideal choice to succeed Carlo Ancelotti as the next manager ay Goodison Park.

As per Football Insider, the chairman of the Merseyside club is championing David Moyes to be the next boss after Ancelotti departed for Real Madrid.

Kenwright wanted Moyes to replace Marco Silva when he left in 2019, and retains great admiration for the West Ham United coach.

He still remains a good relationship with Moyes, although any pursuit of the Scotsman is thought to be a long shot given that he is in advanced discussions over a new contract at the London Stadium.

Although Moyes has come off of the back of a great season with the Hammers, qualifying for the UEFA Europa League, and was generally very successful with the Toffees before, guiding them to an impressive fourth-placed finish in the 2004/05 campaign, several Blues feel as if they do not want to go back to an old manager and instead focus on a new one to take them forward.

He was also largely unsuccessful at Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland by virtue of league positions (Transfermarkt), showing that he does not guarantee success, and at 58 years of age, perhaps the Toffees should be targeting a younger boss with fresh ideas.

Aston Villa: Villains enter talks for Pape Matar Sarr

French journalist Joris Crolbois has claimed that Aston Villa are the first club to enter negotiations with highly sought-after FC Metz midfielder Pape Metar Sarr.

The Lowdown: Villa’s summer spending spree

As the Villains continue to embark on their summer spending spree, they now seem to have turned their attention towards the Senegal international as they look to strengthen ahead of 2021/22 [One Football].

The Villa Park outfit have already agreed a deal for Emi Buendia and are linked with James Ward-Prowse as well.

Enjoying a fantastic start to life in Ligue 1, Sarr played 22 times in the top flight this term, notching three goals from midfield [Transfermarkt].

The Latest: Villa the only club to have ‘started talks’ with Sarr

Replying to Villa supporters on Twitter, sports journalist Crolbois (RMC Sport) remarked: “Milan has been following him since February but Villa is the only club to have started talks.”

This indicates that the Midlands side could be in pole position for his signature which will offer major excitement to the Villa Park faithful.

Crolbois continued to say that although ‘Villa is the first club’ to enter talks, ‘other clubs will certainly come’, but also offered some words of encouragement to Villa fans: “He is a player with enormous potential comparable to Camavinga of Rennes. He showed this season, especially against PSG, that he has the level of the biggest clubs in Ligue 1. Let’s see what happens in the Premier League.”

The verdict: Tackling machine

The 18-year-old may add some further bite to the Villa midfield on arrival. Comparatively to the current midfield options, the wonderkid has a higher tackling rate per 90 minutes that John McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Marvelous Nakamba and Morgan Sanson [WhoScored].

All in all, the midfielder would be an outstanding coup for Aston Villa if they were to successfully thrash out a deal. With Crolbois’ original report quoting a price tag as high as €30m (£25.8m), he wouldn’t come cheap, but Sarr is a beast in the middle of the park already, and at just 18, will surely only become better and even more valuable.

With the right coaching Sarr could be a Premier League star, potentially netting the Villains some serious sell-on value further down the line too, should his development continue at its current rate.

West Ham fans buzz over Milenkovic claim

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans are buzzing as Sky Sports share news involving Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic.

The Serbian powerhouse, standing at a colossal 6 foot 4, was a mainstay for La Viola over the 2020/2021 Serie A season – starting 34 league matches whilst averaging more clearances per 90 (3.6) than any Fiorentina man with over five appearances (WhoScored).

West Ham are said to be prioritising a new centre-half alongside the signing of a new striker and permanent deal for Jesse Lingard this summer (Claret & Hugh), with Milenkovic linked as a defensive target.

Now, Sky Sports Italia (June 23, 10:20) say that the Hammers are ‘back to pushing’ for Milenkovic this summer after they lodged a €25 million (£21.4m) offer last year.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They also say that the bid this time round from West Ham could be lower, but in any case, Fiorentina may be convinced to sell if the right amount arrives.

It’s safe to say this news has many supporters excited, with many Irons dropping takes on the development in response to West Ham Fan Zone and West Ham Central.

Leeds: Offers for Diego Llorente expected

Leeds have ‘no intention of cashing in’ on defender Diego Llorente this summer  but are set to face ‘huge’ offers from within the Premier League.

That’s according to a report from Football Insider.

The lowdown

Leeds paid £18million to sign Llorente from Real Sociedad last September.

Groin trouble, swiftly followed by a hamstring injury, kept Llorente largely out of action until late February (via Transfermarkt).

But since he returned to the starting XI for the 3-0 win over Southampton, he’s started every match.

His performances have left club staff hugely impressed, with Marcelo Bielsa reportedly regarding him as a ‘phenomenal’ talent, and his decision to start him whenever fit shows how highly he rates the defender

The Spaniard has averaged 2.2 successful aerial duels, 2.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 2.5 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season (via WhoScored).

His passing statistics are also strong, with an overall accuracy of 83.3% and an average of 2.7 successful long balls per game.

The latest

A source has told Football Insider that Leeds are aware of ‘growing interest’ in the Spanish centre-half.

He is said to fit the profile of the elite sides that are on the hunt for a centre-half, and the anticipated bids will ‘far exceed’ Leeds’ 2020 outlay, but the Yorkshire outfit still plan to resist any offers.

The verdict

Whilst a healthy profit is of course tempting – and you’d imagine Leeds will be offered somewhere around double their money – to truly reap the rewards of their recruitment they need to stand firm.

Keeping the likes of Llorente and Raphinha around for another full season could be key to a push for European football next year.

And then, with that additional revenue secured, they would be in a much stronger position to either keep hold of these players, demand bigger fees, or even perhaps pursue upgrades once more.

Noel Whelan excited by Rodgers to Spurs claim

Speaking to Football Insider, BBC pundit Noel Whelan has been left excited by reports that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will offer to treble manager Brendan Rodgers’ wages in an effort to appoint him.

Rodgers has been heavily linked with the vacant Spurs managerial role but, in a recent press conference, committed himself to Leicester in an attempt to play down the rumours.

However, a report then surfaced from Football Insider that Levy is now willing to treble Rodgers’ salary in an effort to bring him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Whelan excited by Rodgers development

Reacting to this development, Whelan has been left excited by the notion of Spurs appointing Rodgers and believes that he is definitely the right man to take Spurs forward.

“Oh my God, absolutely,” explained Whelan to Football Insider when asked if Tottenham should make a large Rodgers offer.

“To get a manager that’s probably the best British manager we’ve had for a long long time, absolutely. There’s no doubt he will make a difference. No doubt that he will treat the players in a different way to Mourinho too. You can see that.

“His style of play is exceptional, exactly what Tottenham want and would suit. His man-management skills, it looks like every player wants to play for him.

“If Tottenham can get Brendan Rodgers, that will be more beneficial to them than getting a star player. He will coach them properly, he will manage them properly, he will set them up properly.

“You can see that he is a man of fine details and he does his job to the best of his ability. That’s just proven in where they are in the league right now.”

Transfer Tavern take

It is reported that Tottenham want an attack-minded manager who can implement a style of play to excite supporters, and we believe Rodgers definitely falls into that category.

The Foxes managed the sixth-most sequences of 10 or more passes from open play out of any Premier League side in 2019/20 (Sky Sports) – evidence of his open, attacking style which puts emphasis on dominating matches.

That he has publicly dismissed Tottenham claims could make his appointment more difficult, but a big money offer from Levy could maybe force Rodgers to reconsider depending on developments.

Man linked with takeover drops EPL claim

A man who has previously been linked with a potential takeover of Newcastle United has dropped an enticing claim involving the Premier League.

The Lowdown: Irarragorri once linked with takeover

Alejandro Irarragorri was the leader of The Orlegi Sports group, a Mexican consortium who were reportedly looking to take over at St. James’ Park back in 2019.

A multi-millionaire, he has since been speaking about the opportunity of investing in a club in the English top flight, and given his previous links to the Magpies, it is certainly interesting what he has had to say.

The Latest: Irarragorri talks up Premier League move

Speaking to Sky Sports, Irarragorri has since been talking up potential investment in the division, claiming: “Are we looking to the Premier League? Yes, constantly. We are heading towards that. Let’s see how it goes.”

He did not specifically mention the Toon, but given his previous links to the North East club, one may question whether he would take the opportunity to invest on Tyneside should it come up.

The Verdict: Irarragorri one to watch

If the proposed deal between Mike Ashley and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group does not end up going through, then Irarragorri may certainly be one to watch in terms of a potential new investor.

Whether he would still be interested in taking over NUFC is another question, but the chance may come to him once more if the KSA bid falls flat on its face.

The 50 year-old is the chairman of Liga MX side Santos Laguna, who have six top flight trophies to their name, so perhaps he could be the man to finally lift the Magpies out of their slumber.

Spurs lead charge for Klopp-like Inzaghi

Tottenham Hotspur are leading the charge for one manager, if emerging reports are to be believed…

What’s the word?

According to Corriere Fiorentino Sport, Spurs are the front-runners to secure Lazio boss Simeone Inzaghi, who is out of contract at the Stadio Olimpico this summer.

He’s due to meet the club’s hierarchy this week to discuss his future and is keen to remain at the club he once played for, though he has been waiting since January 2020 to sign a new deal and interest from the Premier League outfit could throw a spanner into the works.

Fiorentina have also been mooted with interest in the report but they announced Genarro Gattuso as their new manager, which only paves the way for Spurs to make their move even more.

Shades of Klopp

As Daniel Levy’s pursuit to find Jose Mourinho’s successor rumbles on, it would not be too much of a surprise to see him return to a manager he clearly admires in Inzaghi.

Before appointing the Portuguese in November 2019, the Spurs chairman was said to have made a “desperate attempt” to secure the 45-year-old, according to Italian agent Vincenzo Morabito (via the Daily Star).

Inzaghi fits a lot of the criteria that Spurs are seeking in their next head coach – that being primarily one that is ‘attack-minded’ in his tactics and has a record in developing young players, as per the Guardian.

At Lazio, the Italian has won 53% of his matches in charge since his appointment in July 2016, whilst also averaging 1.88 goals per game. His system has allowed striker Ciro Immobile to thrive as under his stewardship the forward has bagged 149 goals in just 217 appearances.

Furthermore, Inzaghi has earned a glowing comparison to one of the Premier League’s current best, Jurgen Klopp.

Immobile has worked under both coaches, and told Football Italia:

“Klopp is a great expert in football and I always said that I’d have liked to work with him when I was in my best form. He is a complete coach, he has everything.

“Having said that, he really reminds me of Simone Inzaghi, as they are very similar in their motivational skills, albeit in slightly different ways.”

The former striker has also received high acclaim from others from in and around football.

BT Sport commentator Adam Summerton believes the 45-year-old is “pound for pound the best coach in Serie A over last five years” after delivering “outstanding” progress whilst FIFA agent Claudio Anellucci dubbed him “one of the best coaches in Europe” as he “makes the difference” and “makes the players grow.”

That final part ticks yet another box for Levy.

Inzaghi could well bring a Klopp-like presence to North London, so if he does become available for free this week, then perhaps the Lilywhites should try and tempt him into coming to the Premier League.

LFC fans boosted by Real Madrid injuries

A number of Liverpool fans have been buoyed by the news of Real Madrid’s mounting injury crisis, believing the Reds can progress past the Spanish giants in the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp’s men face a huge game on Wednesday evening as they welcome Zinedine Zidane’s side to Anfield for the second leg of their quarter-final tie. Real Madrid won 3-1 in the last week’s first leg, with Liverpool producing a disappointing performance but at least getting that all-important away goal.

The Reds will have to improve greatly on Wednesday, but news of the La Liga giants’ injuries may give them extra hope going into the game.

Lucas Vazquez has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering cruciate ligament damage in Saturday’s win over Barcelona, while Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Dani Carvajal and Eden Hazard will also be unavailable, as outlined by Semra Hunter from La Liga TV [via Sky Sports].

It means that Liverpool’s attack will come up against a much-weakened Madrid defence, suggesting that a dramatic turnaround against Spanish heavyweights could be on the cards again two years after the epic comeback against Barcelona.
