Why have Pakistan done well in England?

Since 1987, their record shows they have been competitive with the very best teams on tours there

Osman Samiuddin04-Aug-2020The English cricket summer has long held a central place in the Pakistani cricket calendar. But you could argue now that it has become a mere subset of the Pakistani cricket summer. Including this year and the next, when Pakistan are scheduled to visit for a limited-overs-only series, they will have toured England six summers in a row.The frequency and familiarity have helped Pakistan’s modern* Test record in England, which stacks up remarkably well, and not just among subcontinental sides. They’ve won three more Tests in that period than India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh combined. Their win-loss ratio is third, behind only Australia and South Africa.*Pakistan’s modern era in England begins in 1987, when they won their first Test series in England. They had already had a few closely contested series by then, including a 1-1 draw on their very first tour, and narrow losses in 1971 and 1982.ESPNcricinfo LtdA better measure than individual matches is series results, and here, Pakistan stand out. Only Australia have won more series in England in that period, and Pakistan have won as many as India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh combined. And though they haven’t won a series since 1996, they have drawn their last two series (in a period where, for instance, India have lost their last three series, and resoundingly).England is less imposing a place than, say Australia or South Africa, for all teams. Still, Pakistan have stood out. Why? What is it about England that brings out their best?Start as you mean to go on
Pakistan’s record in the first Tests of series in England is exemplary, second in win and non-loss percentages only to Australia and South Africa.

Time and game-time in the country before the Tests does help. In 1987, Pakistan played 13 games before drawing the first Test; 11 in 1992 before drawing the first Test; and eight in 1996 before winning the first Test. But in this century, which doesn’t allow for those luxuries, it is a little more complex.Since 2000, Pakistan have drawn a first Test after four games (2006) and lost one after three games (2001). In 2010 they played nine games before the first Test against England, (including two Tests against Australia) and were resoundingly beaten. In 2016 they only played two warm-up matches, but had spent a month together in a tough conditioning camp in Pakistan, and they won the first Test. In 2018 they played four games – including a hard-fought Test win over Ireland – before winning the first Test at Lord’s.What is clear is that those earlier Pakistan sides were simply better than England. This century that balance has changed and so too have first Tests become a little more difficult to predict. It’s all about the pace
From headliners through to support acts Pakistan’s fast bowlers have thrived in England. In stark contrast to their performances in Australia or South Africa, and perhaps because of strong experiences in county cricket, Pakistan’s pacemen have intrinsically known what to do on English surfaces.

The interplay between the average and strike rate is interesting. While the former is, literally, middling in comparison to other teams, the strike rate is second best (excluding Ireland). It can never be reduced to such simple conclusions, but it does tie in to the theory that Pakistani fast bowlers, historically, have been willing to attack for wickets at the cost of runs, and in England that has paid off.Spin it to win it
Instinctively, you’d recall Mushtaq Ahmed in the ’90s, Saqlain Mushtaq in 2001, and Yasir Shah in 2016 and think spin has been vital for Pakistan in England. It has, though not in a straightforward way. Overall Pakistan’s spinners average 40.51 per wicket, with a strike rate of 85.6. For a country with as rich a tradition of spin to only have three spinners average under 40 in England (one of whom – Saqlain – has only played one Test) suggests they have not known how to bowl there.ESPNcricinfo LtdBut as the figures of other teams show, England isn’t an easy place for spinners. Take out the two greatest of all time – Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan – and no visiting team has really thrived with spin.ESPNcricinfo LtdWhat Pakistan have done is consistently selected and played good spinners in England – only Australia, thanks to Warne, have more total spin wickets in this time – in the knowledge that when conditions are right, they’ll do what is expected of them. Like Mushtaq in 1992 and 1996, Saqlain in 2001, or Yasir in 2016.The meat’s in the middle
Pakistan’s openers are a horror story in England. Their average opening partnership since 1987 is 25, the lowest among all top nations other than India. Per player, their openers average lower than all countries other than Zimbabwe and Ireland. They’ve also burned through more opening pairs than any other side (18) and it has become more acute since 2006, when they famously went through four opening pairs in one series.Girish TS/ESPNcricinfo LtdIn that crisis, however, has been opportunity for Pakistan’s middle order. Ultimately it is this engine that is as much responsible for Pakistan’s record in England as the fast bowlers. Pakistan’s middle order averages 38 in England in this time, which compares well to the hosts’ own: 38.82.Girish TS/ESPNcricinfo LtdOnly Australia’s and South Africa’s middle orders average more in the same period. That is testament to the quality of middle-order players Pakistan have brought over the years, as duos (Javed Miandad and Saleem Malik) or triumvirates (Inzamam-ul-Haq, Ijaz Ahmed and Malik, or Inzamam, Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan). No surprises that when you look at Pakistan’s best batsmen in England – who have scored 400 runs or more – seven of the top nine are middle-order batsmen, and only Azhar Ali (who has opened and played in the middle) averages under 40.Girish TS/ESPNcricinfo LtdLondonistan
It will have escaped no Pakistan fan’s attention that they are not playing a Test in London on this tour. Eight of Pakistan’s ten Test wins in England since 1987 have been at The Oval or Lord’s (and ten out of 12 overall).Whether that is to do with the conditions, or the part of the summer that they play there – Pakistan have won Tests in May, June, July and August – is not clear. One of their two wins outside the capital did come at Old Trafford (in 2001) though, where they begin the series on Wednesday. With inputs from Rajesh S, Shiva Jayaraman and Gaurav Sundararaman

Romano: Leeds make contact to sign “outstanding” £21m attacker in January

Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Leeds United have received a response after making contact to sign an “outstanding” attacker in the past few days.

Leeds showing fight in battle for survival

Heading into a tricky three-game run against Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool, Daniel Farke would’ve been fearing the worst, given the widespread speculation about his future, but his side have managed to amass a very respectable four points.

Even in the 3-2 loss at the Etihad Stadium, the Whites showed heart, fighting back from 2-0 down, which will be very encouraging for Farke, and the 2024-25 Championship title-winners remain outside the relegation zone for the time being.

That said, it is still very close near the bottom of the Premier League table, with both Nottingham Forest and West Ham United starting to pick up better results since hiring new managers.

Consequently, it is little wonder Leeds have started looking at new signings ahead of the January transfer window, recently making an approach for Tromso star Jens Hjerto-Dahl, and they have now set their sights on £21m summer Como signing Martin Baturina.

That is according to Romano (via Leeds United News), who said: “Baturina is a player Como still wants to focus on, they’re not thinking about a January exit. I’ll tell you the behind-the-scenes story. In the last few days, Leeds has been in touch, the teams are starting to move.

“Leeds has proposed opening talks with Como and the player’s agents about a possible transfer, even a permanent one. Leeds would have practically repaid Baturina to Como,”

“The response I understand from both Como and the player was ‘No, thanks’. Baturina wants to stay at Como, he believes in the project Como is happy with Baturina, with how he trains, the potential he has.

“Baturina continues to work hard, but the door has been closed for Leeds. In short, it also marks some clarity regarding the rumours that have been circulating about the future of the Croatian midfielder.”

"Outstanding" Baturina could have bright future ahead

Leeds will be frustrated they didn’t receive the ideal response after making a move for the 22-year-old, given just how impressive he was at Dinamo Zagreb, registering 22 goals and 39 assists in 165 outings, while he has also now scored his first goal for Croatia.

Scout Ben Mattinson has also waxed lyrical about the attacking midfielder, saying a little over a year ago: “His vision and weight of pass is outstanding.”

However, the former Dinamo Zagreb man hasn’t exactly hit the ground running since moving to Italy, being benched for the majority of Como’s Serie A matches this season, having recorded just one goal contribution in his first seven outings.

As such, Baturina clearly isn’t the finished article just yet, so it is not majorly disappointing that Leeds appear to have missed out.

West Ham get Crysencio Summerville injury update after eight-word message from insider

West Ham have been handed an injury update on Crysencio Summervile after the winger missed their 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last weekend.

The Hammers have rediscovered hope in their battle against relegation after an impressive three-game unbeaten streak that has breathed new life into their campaign under new manager Nuno Espírito Santo.

The turnaround began with a crucial 3-1 home win over Newcastle at the start of November, ending a dismal 248-day wait for a London Stadium victory. Lucas Paqueta’s strike and Sven Botman’s own goal overturned Jacob Murphy’s early opener before Tomas Soucek sealed the points in stoppage time.

The victory was significant not just for the three points but for demonstrating resilience after falling behind early, a scenario that had previously prompted capitulations against Chelsea, Tottenham and Brentford.

Six days later, West Ham delivered another comeback against Burnley, grinding out a vital 3-2 victory. After Zian Flemming’s header put the visitors ahead, Callum Wilson equalised before halftime with his eighth career goal against Burnley. Soucek then produced another crucial intervention, bundling home with thirteen minutes remaining before Kyle Walker-Peters wrapped up all three points just minutes from full-time.

The momentum continued at Bournemouth, where Wilson tormented his former club with two excellent first-half goals. Although Nuno’s side surrendered their two-goal advantage through Marcus Tavernier’s penalty and Enes Unal’s late equaliser, the 2-2 draw extended their unbeaten run to three matches.

West Ham have now got eleven points from their last twelve games, climbing out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

Nuno has brought defensive organisation and tactical discipline that was absent under his predecessor Graham Potter. Wilson’s form has been crucial too. Despite initially not being fancied by West Ham’s boss (ExWHUemployee), the summer signing has now bagged four goals in his last three matches.

Jean-Clair Todibo and Max Kilman have improved recently as well, among others, with vice-chair Karren Brady’s decision to push for Nuno’s appointment now paying dividends.

Nuno is on record suggesting that Summerville will be a crucial player for West Ham, and the winger had started every Premier League game for West Ham’s new boss before last weekend’s draw.

ExWHUemployee shares Summerville injury update out of West Ham

Nuno will be keen to have him back to face Liverpool this weekend, and the consensus is that may well be likely.

However, ExWHUemployee has shared an update erring on the side of caution.

Writing via his Patreon, Ex claims that, while Summerville’s injury is perceived as minor, an eight-word message from one of his sources suggests that there is a degree of uncertainty.

If Summerville isn’t fit enough to take part against Liverpool, Nuno will likely call upon Brazilian talent Luis Guilherme, as he did against Bournemouth last Saturday.

Gerrit Cole Has Inspiring Message for Yankees Fans After News of Tommy John Surgery

In what's a massive loss before the regular season even began, New York Yankees ace starting pitcher Gerrit Cole will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will miss the entire 2025 campaign.

While the news is a gut punch for Cole, the Yankees organization, and the club's fans, the 2023 Cy Young Award winner is in a strong frame of mind. Shortly after news broke of his need for season-ending surgery, Cole took to his account on Instagram and shared an inspiring message.

“I have a lot left to give, and I’m fully committed to the work ahead. I’ll attack my rehab every day and support the 2025 Yankees each step of the way,” Cole wrote. “I love this game, I love competing, and I can’t wait to be back on the mound—stronger than ever.”

Cole, 34, was shut down a year ago after experiencing right elbow discomfort, and he did not make his '24 season debut until June. But he rebounded to have a solid season, pitching to a 3.41 ERA in 95 innings in the regular season, then helping the Yankees win the franchise's first American League pennant since 2009 in the postseason, in which the veteran righthander recorded a 2.17 ERA in 29 innings.

Cole, who grew up a Yankees fan, inked a nine-year, $324 million contract with New York back in December of '19. He opted out of his contract in November of '24 but he and the Yankees agreed to continue with the deal as presently constructed, which means he's owed an additional $144 million through 2028.

In five seasons with the Yankees, Cole has pitched to a 59-28 record and a 3.12 ERA with 915 strikeouts in 759 innings.

Ex-Chelsea star Oscar considering retirement after sudden collapse and diagnosis of condition

Former Chelsea star Oscar is reportedly considering retirement after being hospitalised with a heart issue. The 34-year-old is said to have fallen ill during a bicycle test at current side São Paulo and since then, he has been diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, where the blood pressure drops too low, causing people to faint. Now, reports suggest the Brazilian is weighing up whether or not to end his career.

Oscar recovering in hospital

After spending eight years playing in China, Oscar rejoined São Paulo on a deal until 2027 at the end of last year. Following that move, he said: "I'm happy to be back in Brazil and to be able to play for São Paulo, which is the club where I started out, where I made my base and where I grew up. I thank you for the affection I have received on social media these past few days and I will do my best to achieve great things together."

Fast forward to the present, and the veteran may have kicked his last ball for the club after this health scare on Tuesday.

The Brazilian team said on Thursday: "Midfielder Oscar remains hospitalized at Einstein Hospital Israelita, where he was admitted on Tuesday afternoon after presenting an intercurrence with cardiological changes during exams carried out at SuperCT. An extensive investigation carried out at the hospital confirmed the diagnosis of vasovagal syncope. Oscar remains clinically well and stable, hospitalized in a cardiology unit, and this Friday will undergo an electrophysiological study."

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesEnd of the road for Oscar?

Following the incident, Oscar – who started his career at São Paulo way back in 2008 – posted in an Instagram story: "Everything will be alright, God willing."

While he is seemingly staying upbeat, Brazilian publication Globo states that Oscar – who moved to Shanghai in 2017 in a £60 million ($79m) move that reportedly pocketed him around £400,000 a week – is mulling over whether or not to retire from football. They add that it may be more likely he hangs up his boots, rather than continuing.

The report states: "According to a specialist heard by Globo, the problem is not life-threatening and can be solved with medication or simple surgical intervention, where a ganglion is cauterized to avoid getting out of control. Also, according to the expert, Oscar may be able to return to football if everything goes well and he feels comfortable to do so. For now, Oscar still has no discharge forecast. At the age of 34, he evaluates with his family whether he will announce his retirement or continue in football. The biggest tendency is for him to leave professional football."

What is Oscar's condition?

According to the NHS, vasovagal syncope is common, can affect anyone, and is often a temporary problem affecting the body's control system (autonomic nervous system). It is a common cause of fainting that occurs due to a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure, leading to reduced blood flow to the brain. Certain triggers affect the nerve messages, and as a result of this issue, you can feel weak, sick, sweaty, and light-headed – and that can lead to losing consciousness. If you have this problem, people are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, not to stand still for long periods, and to avoid overly warm environments. If you get warning symptoms, sufferers should lie down and squeezing firmly on a ball may be helpful.

AFPWhat comes next for Oscar?

Football fans will be eagerly awaiting to hear from Oscar, who played 203 times for Chelsea and scored 38 goals between 2012-17 before joining Shanghai Port, again and whether or not he will continue his playing career. After making more than 500 appearances in club football, playing 48 times for Brazil, and winning trophies in England, China, and his home country, he may decide that for the good of his health, it is time to move on to something different. However, the Brazilian may still have another chapter to write in his footballing journey.

Man Utd preparing £87m+ bid for "truly fantastic" attacker loved by Modric

Manchester United look to be on an upward trajectory under INEOS and could now submit a sizeable bid for one of the world’s best attackers in January.

Man Utd summer signings deliver again in win over Brighton

Ruben Amorim has endured his fair share of criticism since arriving at Old Trafford. However, he will now feel vindicated in his decision not to change his complex 3-4-3 system after stringing together three consecutive Premier League victories.

Brighton & Hove Albion played some fine football at times at Old Trafford on Saturday. Nevertheless, this sometimes worked to their own detriment, and the Red Devils duly capitalised on a day where Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo were unrelenting.

False dawns have been a frustration in recent years, though this time feels different. There is a togetherness that seems to have been forged after a £225 million transfer spend at the club, and Gary Neville believes Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo’s previous experience of top-flight football has helped drastically amid both making an instant impact since arriving in Manchester.

He told Sky Sports: “With Cunha and Mbeumo, the risk of those signings was removed because in the sense they had played in the Premier League before and they had the hunger to deliver at a different level.

“Mbeumo looks like he belongs. He looks hungry and that he wants to score goals. Manchester United have something to build on. Cunha and Mbeumo will win a lot of matches for Manchester United.”

While the summer arrivals take a lot of the credit, January will be just as important if Manchester United want to make a fist of continental qualification.

Amorim could raid his old club Sporting to sign Ousmane Diomande, though he may also have designs on making a headline signing at the other end of the field.

Man Utd preparing bid for Rafael Leao

According to reports in Spain, Manchester United are preparing a bid in excess of £87 million to sign Rafael Leao from AC Milan, while Liverpool and Manchester City are also lurking in the background, hoping to make their move.

Talks have been initiated with his camp, and the Serie A giants are unlikely to sell for any less than what the Red Devils are keen to put forward, and the final decision will be left with him to determine whether a transfer to the Premier League would be a smart move at this stage in his career.

Tammy Abraham with Rafael Leao at AC Milan.

Starting the campaign in fine form, Leao has scored four times in his opening five appearances across all competitions. Veteran AC Milan midfielder Luka Modric described him as a “truly fantastic” asset to the Rossoneri earlier this week, and it is easy to see why when you delve into his underlying numbers.

Fotmob shows that he has placed five of his nine shots on target in Serie A this season, providing evidence that his record in front of the target stems from acute awareness of his surroundings.

Ultimately, Leao is someone who could lift Manchester United into another dimension, though it remains to be seen whether they have the financial clarity to pull off such a move in mid-season.

Arne Slot comes under fire, Jude Bellingham decides El Clasico and a new star is born at Bayern Munich: 10 biggest winners and losers from the weekend

We're two months into the season now, and it feels like things are starting to take shape around Europe. Some title races are looking like they will be closer than others, with some surprise contenders in the mix, while other presumed challengers are beginning to struggle, casting doubt on the futures of their managers and star players.

In terms of headlines, there were shock defeats for some of the Premier League's biggest fish, a dramatic Clasico in Spain and lead changes at the top of both Serie A and Ligue 1. The top two teams met in both the Netherlands and Scotland, too, meaning there were plenty of winners and losers for GOAL to pick from when looking back at the weekend's action…

Getty Images SportWINNER: Arsenal

Surely – – this is Arsenal's year to get over the hump. After three successive second-placed finishes in the Premier League, the Gunners came into the campaign under pressure to finally deliver a first league title since the Invincibles reigned supreme in 2004, and they could hardly have put themselves in a better position through the first quarter of the campaign.

Mikel Arteta's side have looked a class apart, especially over the past month, though they have also been helped by the failures of others. That was certainly on display over the weekend as, while the Gunners laboured to a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace that again came about thanks to a set-piece, all three of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea slipped to defeats. Arsenal subsequently find themselves four points clear at the top, with surprise package Bournemouth their nearest challengers, followed closely by Tottenham and newly-promoted Sunderland.

There is obviously still a long way to go, but given Arsenal have already got daunting trips to Anfield, Old Trafford and St. James' Park out of the way and come out the other side with a healthy lead, it already feels like it would take an almighty collapse for them to throw this one away.

AdvertisementAFPLOSER: Arne Slot

The most damaging of those defeats for Arsenal's title rivals was undoubtedly Liverpool's 3-2 loss at Brentford. There had been hope that the Reds had turned a corner following their 5-1 thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt in midweek, but the Reds' frailties that have dogged them throughout the opening months of the campaign returned on Saturday as they again defended shambolically while showing little to no cohesion in attack.

Four successive league defeats has left the defending Premier League champions seven points off the summit and, in some quarters, cast doubt on the future of manager Arne Slot. The Dutchman could do no wrong in guiding Liverpool to the title in their first post-Jurgen Klopp campaign last term, but Slot has looked short of answers so far this term, with it clear he neither knows his best starting combination nor is able to avoid panicking when it comes to trying to change games with his substitutions.

Liverpool have regularly finished games with five forwards on the pitch this season as they chase winning or equalising goals, and things came to a head at the Gtech Community Stadium when, having already made four attacking substitutions, Slot was forced to withdraw Florian Wirtz for the final five minutes and replace him with Joe Gomez as his previous changes had ended up neutralising Dominik Szoboszlai's impact, with the Hungarian having been shifted to right-back in the shuffle.

With games against in-form Aston Villa and Manchester City to come in the league before the November international break, Liverpool will have to massively raise their game to not fall totally out of the title race – that is, if they haven't already.

AFPWINNER: Jude Bellingham

The biggest game of the European weekend was undoubtedly El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona, and it was Los Blancos who ran out 2-1 winners to stretch their lead atop La Liga to five points as Xabi Alonso's revolution begins to take shape at Santiago Bernabeu.

One player who has had to wait patiently to get their season going is Jude Bellingham, but if his performance on Sunday was anything to go by, then the England midfielder is set to become a key piece of what Alonso is trying to achieve in the Spanish capital. For the third time in five La Liga meetings with Barcelona, Bellingham scored the winning goal, though his strike – much like his winner against Juventus in midweek – owed more to being in the right place at the right time to tap home rather than any individual brilliance.

His assist for Kylian Mbappe's opening goal, however, was Bellingham at his best. Picking up the ball just inside the Barca half, the Madrid No.5 produced a turn that sent Pedri for a hot dog and gave himself the time and space to produce an inch-perfect through-ball for Mbappe to run onto and fire past Wojciech Szczesny.

That was the highlight of an all-action display from Bellingham, who is showing few signs of any lasting damage from his shoulder surgery over the summer. With that in mind, it is crazy to think that there are those who believe England might be better off without him at this summer's World Cup. Surely Thomas Tuchel isn't one of them?…

Getty Images SportLOSER: Lamine Yamal

On the other side of the Clasico divide, all eyes were understandably on Lamine Yamal ahead of kick-off. Not only did the teenage sensation carry with him Barcelona's best chance of victory, especially with Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski out injured, he also poked the Madrid bear by claiming in the days leading up to the game that Real are a team who "steals and complains", which many felt was Yamal referencing the pressure Los Blancos regularly put on referees and match officials.

Unsurprisingly, the Bernabeu faithful did not take well to such comments, and Yamal was mercilessly booed whenever he picked up the ball. Whether that affected the 18-year-old, or whether he is still not fully fit after a couple of injury issues of his own, only he will know, but Yamal was miles off his best level on Sunday. His passing and shooting was wayward and he was mostly locked down by Alvaro Carreras when he attempted to dribble inside and create an opportunity for the visitors.

Yamal's miserable day was capped when he became the target of Madrid's post-match wrath, as Dani Carvajal, Thibaut Courtois and Vinicius Jr were all seen berating the youngster at full-time, presumably because of the slanderous nature of his pre-match comments. Yamal will be the hero of plenty of Clasicos in his career, but this was one he will look back on with plenty of regrets.

West Indies' historic chase ends in heartbreak as Bangladesh seal World Cup spot

West Indies have missed on the Women’s ODI World Cup by a fraction – literally – after they successfully chased 167 against Thailand in 10.5 overs but still needed to score the runs a little quicker to overhaul Bangladesh’s net run-rate. West Indies needed to reach 167 in 9.6 overs or win with a boundary that would take them to 171 in 10.5 overs. In the end, their net run-rate was 0.013 behind Bangladesh’s, which denied them a place at this year’s World Cup.This is the first time in six editions, since the year 2000, that West Indies will not be part of a Women’s World Cup and comes after they finished as losing semi-finalists in 2022. Bangladesh, who qualified ahead of West Indies, will play in their second successive World Cup despite losing to Pakistan by seven wickets in the final fixture of the qualifier. Bangladesh also lost to West Indies in their campaign while West Indies’ opening defeat to Scotland and 65-run loss to Pakistan were ultimately responsible for them falling short.Related

After Pakistan secured their World Cup spot on Thursday, the final place was decided in the last match in dramatic fashion. West Indies chose to field first, while Pakistan were chasing 179 against Bangladesh. Pakistan reached the target inside 40 overs but had they taken 45 overs to get there, West Indies would have no possible scenario to go past Bangladesh’s net run-rate while chasing. West Indies also gave themselves far more to get than they would have liked after they had Thailand 85 for 6 in the 27th over and a target of 120 looked possible.Natthakan Chantham kept the tail together for partnerships of 33, 14, 19 and 15 for the seventh to tenth wickets as Thailand batted until the 47th over to set West Indies a target of 167. Afy Fletcher’s career-best 4 for 20 will be but a footnote in a painful chapter of West Indian cricket’s history.By the time West Indies’ chase began, they knew exactly what they needed to do to qualify for the World Cup and it was a tough task. To leapfrog Bangladesh, they had to score 167 runs in ten overs, with a little bit of wriggle room. If the West Indies hit a six when the scores were level, they could have taken 11 overs, which meant their scoring rate had to be at least 15.64.Thailand started with a no-ball in an over that also included a dropped catch (Hayley Matthews on 3) and a wide but West Indies got no boundaries off Phannita Maya initially and the required run-rate was already pushing past 17.5. Matthews hit the third ball of Nattaya Boochatham’s first over for six and so began a parade of boundaries. Matthews was on 22 when she was caught off a no-ball and got to fifty off 21 balls, one more delivery than the world record in women’s ODIs held by Deandra Dottin while Qiana Joseph contributed 26 off 12 balls before she was caught at fine leg, trying to clear the boundary. By then, West Indies were 81 in the sixth over and, with Matthews still there, on track to break Bangladesh’s hearts.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Big-hitting Chinelle Henry was promoted to No. 3 and took two balls to get her eye in before hitting her first six. She combined with Matthews for 24 runs off nine balls and West Indies seemed in control but when Matthews was caught at short third, the nerves started showing. West Indies needed 62 runs off four overs when Matthews was dismissed.Shermaine Campbell joined Henry and understood her role was to rotate strike but the singles only added pressure. Henry smashed 20 runs off five balls in the ninth over to leave West Indies needing 31 off six balls to qualify. They got nine off the first three balls before Campbell was run out and the pressure cooker close to exploding. Henry closed out the over with a six and a four and West Indies ended the Powerplay on 156 for 6, 11 runs away but with balls running out. They took a single off the first ball of the 11th over and then Henry was run out which meant they needed to score more than the target in order to surpass Bangladesh’s net run-rate. After Aaliyah Alleyne hit a four off her first ball, she took a single, which put West Indies on 162 after 10.4 overs. A four off the next ball would have tied the match and then they would have needed six of the final ball to get to 172 and past Bangladesh. Instead, Stafanie Taylor hit the next ball for six to end the game with West Indies’ total on 168. She punched her bat straightaway as West Indian tears flowed and their World Cup dream ended.Scant consolation will be that no team before them had even scored ten runs an over in an innings in Women’s ODI history (over 1400 matches). Only one team has scored 15-plus runs per over in an innings in men’s ODI history (nearly 5000 matches) – 15.83 by New Zealand against Bangladesh in 2008, who scored 95 for 0 in six overs to finish a chase of 94. That they managed to score at 15.50 and still fell short of a World Cup will be difficult to digest in days to come.[File photo] Muneeba Ali top-scored in Pakistan’s chase•Asian Cricket Council

It was far less complicated for Pakistan, who completed a stellar run of five wins from five with their most comprehensive performance in the last game. They were especially untroubled by Bangladesh, who they had on the ropes at 21 for 3 inside seven overs and 178 for 9 after 50.Bangladesh had no individual half-centuries or partnerships worth more than 44 and posted their first score under 200 of the tournament. Fatima Sana was excellent with the new ball and struck twice. She bowled Fargana Hoque and then had Nigar Sultana out lbw for 1 to finish with 12 tournament wickets, the joint second-most of the qualifiers behind Matthews.Ritu Moni’s 48 and Fahima Khatun’s 44* ensured Bangladesh got past 150 but they needed much more. Marufa Akter gave them a good start when she removed Shawaal Zulfiqar lbw with a pinpoint inswinging yorker but it was all Pakistan from there.Sidra Amin and Muneeba Ali put on a second-wicket stand of 80 and Muneeba scored her second half-century of the competition before Muneeba and Aliya Riaz shared a 74-run third wicket partnership. Riaz’s fifty was her third of the tournament and suggests her promotion to No. 4 could be permanent.Pakistan reached the target after 39.4 overs which brought Bangladesh’s net run-rate down from 1.033 to 0.639. They had no idea then how crucial it was that they didn’t dip any lower. It will doubtless concern Bangladesh that they did not beat either of Pakistan or West Indies but those are worries for another day as they celebrate reaching the World Cup.The ICC has confirmed to ESPNcricnfo that the tournament will follow a hybrid model, in line with the agreement reached by the BCCI and PCB earlier this year. Pakistan will play their games outside India. For West Indies, it will be a long trip home with the 2026 T20 World Cup next in their sights.
