Better signing than Disasi: £24m titan is now pushing to join Sunderland

While a much-changed side slipped up in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, it was Sunderland’s wasteful finishing that cost them on the road at Burnley at the weekend.

Regis Le Bris’ Black Cats were lethal, on the contrary, when swatting West Ham United aside 3-0 to kick off the new Premier League campaign. But, at Turf Moor, nine efforts on the Clarets’ goal would go begging, with Eliezer Mayenda, in particular, guilty of fluffing his lines when failing to fire home a point-blank effort early into the first half.

The defence wasn’t without its faults in Lancashire, either, as both of Burnley’s on-target efforts on the day were tucked away, leaving Le Bris with a whole host of late targets on his shopping list to improve the Wearside outfit all across the pitch.

Sunderland pushing to sign £24m titan

The Frenchman will just pray his team can find consistent results moving forward, knowing performances such as the one dished up at Burnley could result in an instant collapse back down to the Championship.

In a bid to introduce more star quality to the ranks, Sunderland are now being tipped to make a last-ditch £30m move for RC Strasbourg attacker Dilane Bakwa, on top of also being interested in the prospect of snapping up Chelsea reserve defender Axel Disasi to add more Premier League-recognised defenders to the group.

Sunderland are also still in the hunt for long-term target Jhon Lucumi from Bologna to bolster at the back, with another twist in the tale reported by journalist Eduardo Burgos, via X.

Despite lining up for his current employers during their opening contest in Serie A, the Colombian – who looks to be available for a fee around the £24m region – is still pushing for a move at the final hour, with Sunderland even opening back up negotiations with Vincenzo Italiano’s men to finally get a deal over the line.

Jhon Lucumi for Bologna.

If the deal finally were to have legs, this would be a far more impressive purchase to seal than going after Disasi, especially if Lucumi is open to relocating to English shores for less than the Chelsea reserve centre-back’s price tag.

Why Lucumi would be a better signing than Disasi

Unfortunately, despite showing promising early signs at Stamford Bridge, Disasi has become another forgotten man in Enzo Maresca’s overloaded camp.

The former AS Monaco colossus would shine in spurts for Chelsea when used frequently during the 2023/24 season, with an unerring 91% pass accuracy averaged across his 31 Blues league encounters, as per Sofascore.

However, he has also been prone to a lackadaisical error on the ball in the first team picture at Chelsea, as seen in this costly moment last season that saw now Chelsea attacker Liam Delap run away with confidence, before teeing up Omari Hutchinson to gift Ipswich Town a shock 2-0 lead.

The same lax errors seeping into his game on Wearside would be potentially detrimental to Sunderland’s survival chances, with Lucumi far more well-versed in what it takes to be a success at a challenging top-flight level in the Serie A, away from Disasi, who has largely flattered to deceive at Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, last season saw Lucumi solidify his position as one of Bologna’s main starters, with a formidable ten clean sheets picked up as Italiano’s men finished in a comfortable ninth final spot.

Le Bris will be dreaming of similar secure finishes down the line at the Black Cats, with Lucumi actually trumping Disasi’s assured passing numbers at his Chelsea peak when also averaging a 92% pass accuracy last campaign, leading to analyst Ben Mattinson hailing the South American as “ice-cold” for his composure with the ball at his feet.

Bologna's Jhon Lucumi in action against Angel Di Maria in the Champions League.

The towering 6-foot-2 titan can also put his lofty frame to good use with 3.9 duels won on average, meaning he might well prove to be an ideal replacement for Daniel Ballard, too, if the Northern Irishman is resigned to another stay in the Stadium of Light treatment room after coming off injured at Burnley.

While Disasi was once previously dubbed a “monster” for his heroics at Chelsea by journalist Rahman Osman, it’s clear now that his stock has worryingly declined in West London.

On the other hand, for roughly £6m less than the Frenchman, Sunderland might well be able to poach a stronger alternative target in Lucumi, who is still very much stuck in his Bologna prime.

Talking before the defeat at Turf Moor, Le Bris admitted that Sunderland still want to make new additions before the September 1 deadline.

When asked on potential signings out wide, Le Bris added: “There’s a lot of speculation which is positive for everyone. Same answer. If it’s possible to reinforce the squad with the right profile we’ll move forward, but it’s not just our question. It’s a question of the player and the club, so we’ll see.”

A new centre-back is also wanted, especially as Dan Ballard went off injured against Burnley. Jhon Lucumi of Bologna has been heavily linked with a move to Sunderland, however, another defensive target with Premier League experience is wanted by the Black Cats.

Sunderland make contact to sign Lloyd Kelly

According to reports from Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, Sunderland have made an enquiry to sign Juventus centre-back Lloyd Kelly. Formerly of Newcastle, Kelly’s loan move to Turin became permanent over the summer for £15m, but a return to the Premier League is possible.

Newcastle United'sLloydKellybefore the match

As well as the Black Cats making contact over a transfer, Crystal Palace have followed suit as they view Kelly as a replacement for Guehi, who is being heavily linked with a move to Liverpool.

Juventus have even identified Paris Saint-Germain’s Lucas Beraldo as a replacement for Kelly, so a last-minute move back to England could be on the cards.

Kelly, previously of Bristol City and Bournemouth before his move to Newcastle and subsequent transfer to Juventus, has played 64 times in the Premier League and was once called “incredible” by former manager Gary O’Neil.

Therefore, if Sunderland miss out on Lucumi and Crystal Palace keep hold of Guehi, Kelly, similar to O’Nien, could be an ideal option for Le Bris, making this one to watch.

Tottenham's new stance on signing Morgan Gibbs-White amid Forest legal threat

Tottenham are facing a significant delay to their deal for Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White, with the Premier League rivals threatening legal action over what they perceive to be an illegal approach from Thomas Frank’s side.

£138k-a-week Brazilian very keen to join Tottenham amid Gibbs-White twist

Daniel Levy wants two more additions in midfield.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 11, 2025

Spurs were thought to be on the verge of welcoming Gibbs-White to north London as Frank’s second major signing after Mohammed Kudus, who completed a £55 million switch from West Ham on Thursday evening.

The 25-year-old was even scheduled to have a medical at Hotspur Way on Friday, and Daniel Levy was ready to trigger his £60 million release clause. However, Forest’s threat of a complaint to the Premier League is now threatening the transfer, as first reported by Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett.

“More on Morgan Gibbs-White. Nottingham Forest have reported Spurs to the Premier League this afternoon for making an illegal approach and have threatened legal action,” wrote fellow journalist Ben Jacobs on X.

“Spurs have received communication asking them to cease contact with Gibbs-White. Forest declined to comment, but sources say the club believe Spurs tapped up Gibbs-White and could challenge the manner in which the £60m clause was learned of. The Premier League will now investigate leading to the deal being delayed and potentially in doubt.”

In more positive news for supporters, there is an expectation from some reliable media sources that Forest will eventually be powerless to stop the deal from happening, so it could just be a case of having to wait for Gibbs-White to officially seal his move from the City Ground to north London.

In any case, this is a very bizarre, evolving situation – and one which has barely ever been seen before in recent years.

Tottenham's stance on signing Morgan Gibbs-White amid legal threat

Taking to X, Alasdair Gold shared his own piece for football.london, pleading for just “one normal day” at Spurs following a rather hectic last week.

In his article, the reliable Tottenham correspondent reported that they’re still very keen to pursue a deal for the ex-Wolves sensation, despite it currently sitting in limbo, and there is a feeling within Forest that they will just have to stand aside for Gibbs-White to seal his move to N17 – even if they’re preparing legal action.

The likelihood right now is that Spurs will eventually sign Gibbs-White, which would allow Levy to make the statement double signing of Kudus and the Three Lions ace for a total fee of around £115 million.

Elsewhere, it is believed that Tottenham are still keen on signing Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, who is pushing to leave the Gtech Community Stadium.

Even better than Paixao: Leeds hopeful of sealing signing of £50m striker

Leeds United appear to be turning their attention towards targets at the top end of the pitch after signing three defenders to bolster their options at the back.

Gabriel Gudmundsson, Jaka Bijol, and Sebastiaan Bornauw have arrived at Elland Road to improve Daniel Farke’s rearguard, whilst striker Lukas Nmecha has also joined on a free transfer.

The Whites are now ready to target players in the attacking areas of the pitch in order to build a team that is capable of avoiding an instant relegation from the Premier League.

Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Symth recently revealed that the Championship champions have made contact with the agents of Feyenoord winger Igor Paixao.

The reporter then added that the Whites are willing to pursue a deal for the Brazilian forward in spite of the fact that he is currently rehabbing from an injury.

What Igor Paixao could bring to Leeds

If Leeds can follow up on this interest by getting a deal over the line for the Feyenoord sensation before the end of the summer transfer window, Farke could have an exciting left winger at his disposal.

Igor Paixao for Feyenoord.

The 25-year-old flanker ended the 2024/25 campaign with an eye-catching haul of 18 goals and 19 assists in 47 appearances in all competitions for the Dutch side, which included 16 goals and 14 assists in the Eredivisie.

Paixao is a right-footed left winger who likes to cut inside from the left to deliver goals and assists on a regular basis, which he did to great effect in the Netherlands last season.

Leeds need a player who brings those qualities to the team after Manor Solomon returned to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last season, after he spent the term on loan at Elland Road.

As you can see in the table above, Paixao has the potential to offer similar levels of quality to the Israel international as a scorer and a creator of goals, albeit he is more geared towards scoring than creating in comparison to the Spurs winger.

However, the Brazilian has not played in a European league outside of the Netherlands and there is no guarantee that his form will translate over to England, as Luis Sinisterra has produced eight goals and three assists in 51 games in the Premier League since his move from Feyenoord.

This is why the Whites could land an even better player for their attack amid their interest in a star who has already proven themselves in England.

Leeds hopeful of signing Premier League striker

According to LeedsUnitedNews, the club have made ‘progress’ in their pursuit of a deal for Fulham centre-forward Rodrigo Muniz ahead of next season.

The Whites are interested in adding the Brazilian marksman to their squad to lead the line for them in the Premier League, and are continuing to pursue a move for the Cottagers ace.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

This latest report claims that Leeds are ‘hopeful’ of concluding a deal for the 26-year-old number nine, who has indicated that he would be interested in a move to Elland Road.

It states that Muniz wants to be the main man if he moves to a new club, having played second fiddle to Raul Jimenez at Craven Cottage last season, and that could work to Farke’s advantage.

LeedsUnitedNews adds that the club are stepping up their efforts to sign the Fulham attacker, who has been valued at £50m this summer, and are ‘edging closer’ to a deal.

Why Muniz would be a better signing than Paixao for Leeds

Whilst Paixao would be an exciting signing for Leeds, because of the numbers he put up in the Netherlands last season, Muniz would be an even better signing for the club because he is a proven Premier League talent.

As aforementioned, there is no telling how the Feyenoord attacker will adapt to life in England. There is no guarantee that he will deliver 18 goals and 19 assists for Leeds, given Sinisterra’s struggles after making the same switch from Feyenoord to West Yorkshire a few years ago.

Fulham's RodrigoMunizcelebrates scoring their third goal

This means that he would be a risky signing for the club to make, but with the potential to be an excellent addition, whilst Muniz would be a fairly ‘safe’ move for the Whites to complete this summer.

The Fulham striker has been there and done it in the Premier League, proving that he can score goals against the standard of defenders in the English top-flight, which is why he would be such a crucial signing for Leeds.

As you can see in the table above, Muniz has scored 17 goals in just 26 starts in the division since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, rotating with Jimenez at Craven Cottage.

Leeds could offer him the chance to be the main man, starting almost every game if fit and available, and that could provide him with the opportunities to hit double figures for goals, given his impressive output in limited minutes at Fulham.

These statistics show why Muniz is an even better player for Leeds to target this summer because he has a track record that suggests that he can hit the ground running and deliver quality on a regular basis in the Premier League.

Personal terms done: Leeds in talks to land bigger signing than Longstaff

Leeds United have agreed personal terms with a star who would be a bigger signing than Sean Longstaff.

ByDan Emery Jul 17, 2025

Again, that is not to say that Paixao will be a bad signing, as they could both arrive and form a lethal partnership at the top end of the pitch, but there appears to be far less risk attached to a move for the Fulham striker.

A bigger loss than Raskin: Talks ongoing for Rangers star to leave Ibrox

Players have returned for pre-season training with Glasgow Rangers as Russell Martin prepares his group ahead of the Champions League qualifying clash next month.

The Light Blues have less than a month to prepare for their two-legged tie, as they look to make their way through to the next stage of the qualifiers and bring regular top-class continental football to Ibrox.

Martin has a lot of work to do on the coaching pitch to ensure that the players at Rangers know what their roles are and how they will play his system effectively, but he also has a lot of work to do in the summer transfer window.

For example, Cyriel Dessers could be on his way out of Glasgow before the end of the window amid reported interest from AEK Athens, who have been pushing to sign him, and Feyenoord.

It now remains to be seen whether or not the Nigeria international will still be at Ibrox by the time their Champions League qualifiers get underway.

He may not be the only star to move on from the Scottish Premiership giants this summer, though, as Nicolas Raskin has also been linked with an exit.

Why losing Nicolas Raskin would be a blow for Rangers

The Belgium international is attracting plenty of interest after his performances in the 2024/25 season for the Light Blues, as a number of Premier League teams are reportedly keen on signing him.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, Aston Villa, and Leeds United are all reportedly eyeing up the former Standard Liege talent, who is valued at £25m by the Scottish side.

Raskin joining one of those three teams this summer, despite the money that could be involved in a deal, would be a big blow for Martin because of the quality that he would be losing from the XI.

In the 2024/25 season, the Belgian central midfielder was particularly impressive in the Premiership with his displays in the middle of the park for the Gers.

As you can see in the table above, Raskin carried a threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals for his side, which shows that Martin would be losing a quality operator at the top end of the pitch.

However, Rangers could lose another player who would be an even bigger miss than the midfield star because of his attacking contributions for the team this season.

European team hope to sign Rangers star

According to reports on the continent, Ligue 1 side Lille now “hope” to finalise a deal to sign Morocco international Hamza Igamane from Rangers before the end of the summer transfer window.

The reporter claims that talks are ongoing between the two clubs to reach an agreement on a transfer fee, as the French team seemingly close in on the Gers centre-forward.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Tavolieri adds that the 22-year-old has already agreed personal terms with Lille, with a verbal agreement now in place, and this suggests that the only hurdle left to jump over is the transfer fee.

Igamane is reportedly valued at a fee of around £15m by Rangers and it remains to be seen whether or not the French side will be willing to pay that much money for the versatile attacker.

This latest update from Tavolieri suggests that Lille are confident that they can get a deal done for him, given that they hope to finalise terms over a transfer for the striker, and losing the forward would be an even bigger loss than Raskin for Martin.

Why losing Igamane would be a big blow for Rangers

If Igamane seals a permanent transfer to Lille this summer then the Light Blues would be losing their most efficient finisher and goalscorer ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The Moroccan star enjoyed a terrific first season in Glasgow with the Gers, scoring 16 goals in 46 matches in all competitions for the Scottish giants, and showcased his quality in front of goal.

Dessers ended the Premiership season as the top scorer for Rangers with a haul of 18 goals from 19.4 xG, which shows that he was wasteful in front of goal with the quality of chances that came his way.

Igamane, who only started 23 of his 33 league appearances for the club, provided far more quality as a finisher with the chances that he had in the Premiership for the Gers.

At the age of 22, Igamane also has plenty of time left to develop and improve even further under Martin’s coaching, if he stays. Whereas Raskin is a bit older and closer to his prime at the age of 24.

Reported fees of £25m for Raskin and £15m for Igamane also suggest that Rangers would not get as much value out of a sale for the striker, in comparison to the midfielder.

Therefore, selling the Moroccan forward would be an even bigger loss for the Gers because they would be getting £10m less for a player who offered more game-changing quality in the final third, and who has more time ahead of him to improve further.

With Robin Pröpper and Leon Balogun on their way out of Rangers, are they about to sign a potential new captain to replace James Tavenier?

This is why Martin should be hoping that Lille fail to finalise a deal with the club in the coming days and weeks, as Igamane could be a key player for him next season.

Arsenal confirm "very popular" 22-year-old has now joined another club

Arsenal are making an effort to restructure and revitalize their squad ahead of an all-important 2025/2026 campaign, with Mikel Arteta under some pressure to deliver a trophy after five years without major silverware, discounting the Community Shield.

Mikel Arteta set for a vital season with Arsenal silverware expected

Arteta delivered the FA Cup at the end of his first campaign in charge, but since then, Arsenal have had precious little to shout about despite some very close calls.

Arsenal registered an incredible 89 points during the 2023/2024 season, which would have been enough to win the Premier League title in many of the previous campaigns, but Man City’s imperiousness ultimately thwarted Arteta.

It was a similar story during the 22/23 campaign, but Arsenal were miles off this year’s eventual title winners Liverpool, having missed out on the domestic crown by a seismic 10 points.

The Gunners have also failed to deliver in all other domestic and European cup competitions since 2020, with Arteta now facing a vital next season where he simply must deliver glory to the Emirates after many years of building an elite-level squad.

“There’s no doubt next season the pressure will be on Arteta massively in terms of winning something and winning something big,” said Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.

“If they don’t do that, the Arsenal board will have a massive issue, because they won’t want to change the manager, but there will be lots of people saying ‘five or six years without a trophy’ and they will be looking at how many managers can make that next step.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetaduring a lap of appreciation after the match

“The problem with changing Mikel Arteta is that Arsenal could easily become what Chelsea are now, a team finishing second year in, year out, to a team not getting into the Champions League.

“That’s the big conundrum Arsenal will have in 12 months if they go close again but don’t get over the line. It feels like next season has to be the season.”

Trimming the deadwood and making room for vital new additions is imperative, and they’ve now managed to get previous highly-rated youngster Marquinhos off the books for good.

Arsenal confirm Marquinhos has joined Cruzeiro permanently

The 22-year-old Brazilian, according to Arteta, was actually a “very popular” player behind-the-scenes at London Colney, but he could never quite cement himself as a part of the manager’s long-term plans on the field.

Marquinhos has been on loan at Brazilian side Cruzeiro since January, which included an obligation to buy based on certain conditions, and that now appears to have been triggered.

Arsenal announced on Monday that Marquinhos has joined Cruzeiro on a permanent deal, bringing an end to his three-year stay at N5, which initially brought so much promise, only for the forward to be deemed surplus.

“He’s very popular, with no English, just with his smile and attitude,” said Arteta about Marquinhos in 2022.

“He has earned the respect and admiration of everybody here.”

Marquinhos’ move to Cruzeiro was initially under threat, according to some reports in South America, but he’s now officially set to start a new chapter back in his homeland.

"One of the best coaches ever" front runner to replace Juric at Southampton

“One of the best coaches ever” is now a front-runner to replace Ivan Juric at Southampton, who have already identified a number of managers as potential targets, according to a report.

Southampton part ways with Juric after relegation

The Saints’ relegation from the Premier League was finally confirmed on Sunday, following a 3-1 loss at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, although in truth the writing has been on the wall for quite some time, after a disastrous campaign.

Juric inherited a difficult situation at St. Mary’s, with Russell Martin being sacked in December, at which point his side were already nine points from safety, but there were very few signs of improvement after the 49-year-old’s arrival.

With just seven games left to go, the soon-to-be Championship side need to collect two more points to avoid breaking an unwanted record, with Derby County’s 11 points in the 2007-08 campaign currently the lowest total in Premier League history.

Next season, the aim will undoubtedly be to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt, and the board have now started to identify managers who could give them a very good chance of doing exactly that.

According to a report from The Boot Room, Southampton have a number of options in mind, including Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, but Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior is believed to be one of the front-runners.

BlueCo may not make it easy for the Saints to snap Rosenior up, however, as they are determined to keep hold of the up-and-coming manager, with Strasbourg faring very well in their pursuit of qualification for the Champions League.

As such, Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Rohl could be a more attainable target, given that the German coach has a relatively affordable £5m release clause included in his contract with the Owls.

Rosenior impressing in Ligue 1 with Strasbourg

It is little wonder Southampton are keen on appointing the Englishman, given the job he has done at Strasbourg this season, with his side currently in fourth place, just three points behind second-placed Marseille.

The 40-year-old has orchestrated a phenomenal turnaround, with Strasbourg finishing 13th under the helm of Patrick Vieira last season, and he has previously been hailed for his ability on the training ground.

Clinton Morrison praised the work the Strasbourg boss did during his time as Derby County’s caretaker manager, saying: “I actually think he’s a top manager,”

“I spoke to a few people at Derby. He was unlucky to lose his job, the players respected him. He’s one of the best coaches ever.”

However, with Strasbourg on course to qualify for the Champions League, it seems unlikely that Rosenior would be willing to manage a Championship side next season, particularly with BlueCo so eager to keep hold of him, so Rohl could be a more realistic appointment for the Saints.

Conway and Santner outdo Hope's 109 to seal it for New Zealand

The hosts took an unbeatable 2-0 lead against West Indies in the three-match ODI series

Another New Zealand-West Indies game, another last-over finish, another heartbreak for West Indies. For the longest time, the stars seemed to be aligning for West Indies. After Shai Hope’s unbeaten 69-ball 109 took them to 247 for 9 in the rain-reduced 34-overs-a-side contest, the visitors would have fancied their chances. And they were in this, particularly when New Zealand found themselves at 194 for 5, needing another 54 runs off 29 balls. But then, as it has so often happened in the white-ball leg of this tour, Mitchell Santner came clutch and took New Zealand to a five-wicket win, giving them an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. With the equation coming down to 40 off 18 deliveries, Santner took on Matthew Forde, who, by then, had gone at only four runs an over. Santner carted Forde for 4, 6, 4 to take 18 runs off the 32nd over. Santner then smashed Shamar Springer for four and six in the second-last over, leaving New Zealand eight runs to win off the 34th.Related

It could still have been anyone’s game, but Jayden Seales bowled a chest-high no-ball, which Tom Latham calmly glided over the wicketkeeper. Then Santner fittingly sealed the chase with a crash through extra cover as New Zealand prevailed with three balls to spare. Seales was distraught, flinging his cap to the floor, sinking to it himself, and needing help from several of his team-mates to come off the field. As has been the case all through the series, the second ODI ebbed and flowed all the way through. Chasing 248, Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra found the going tough on a treacherous Napier surface. But once the duo settled down, the runs started to flow. They added 106 runs off 99 balls, New Zealand’s first century opening-wicket stand in ODIs in 74 innings since February 2020.They were quite scratchy early on, though, against some tight West Indies bowling. Forde got the ball to move both ways as Conway played out a maiden first up. Ravindra got going with a couple of runs before Conway got off the mark with a crisp square drive through point. There were a couple of very tight leaves, while both batters were beaten several times outside off with the exaggerated movement as New Zealand squeaked to 13 for 0 after five overs.Conway took the attacking route when he thrashed Seales through point, while Ravindra deposited him over deep midwicket for the first six of New Zealand’s innings. Romario Shepherd was introduced into the attack right after the powerplay, but was unable to stem the flow of runs.Rachin Ravindra had a century opening stand with Devon Conway•AFP/Getty Images

Ravindra, by now in full flow, pulled Forde over cow corner before Conway went after Justin Greaves, pulling him over deep square leg. Springer was dumped over the leg side fence twice in an over as New Zealand started catching up. Ravindra reached his sixth ODI fifty in style by slog sweeping Roston Chase for six. However, Ravindra fell soon after, when, in a bid to up the scoring rate, he sliced Greaves to backward point, where Chase timed his jump to perfection. Will Young, short of runs, came in at No. 3, and failed to inject any momentum into the chase. He was beaten multiple times, and fell 14 balls into his innings, slog sweeping to deep square leg.Mark Chapman came and went as the hosts lost three wickets in a hurry. Conway, meanwhile, stood firm and continued to rack up boundaries regularly. He reached his fifty off 54 balls, and stepped on the accelerator with the required rate climbing. Just when it seemed Conway would break his century-drought, he fell for 90, thrashing a cut off Springer straight to point. With the required rate now past ten an over, Latham and Santner joined forces. They took their time to settle in, targeting the short square boundaries on both sides. It wasn’t until the 31st over, with the required rate in excess of 13, when Santner flipped the switch, and, along with Latham, took New Zealand over the line, helping them register their 11th straight bilateral ODI series win at home.Earlier, West Indies captain Hope showed his class as he single-handedly propelled his team from 130 for 6 in 24 overs to 247 for 9 in 34, on the way notching up his 19th ODI century.Shai Hope made 109 not out off 69 balls•AFP/Getty Images

The match, supposed to start at 2pm local time, was delayed by close to three hours due to rain and a wet outfield. When the toss did eventually take place, Santner, with a smirk on his face, had no hesitation in bowling first. From the outset, it was clear that batting would be hard work. Kyle Jamieson got the ball to move heaps as West Indies played out three maidens in the first four overs. After multiple wafts and across-the-line attempts, Ackeem Auguste pumped Matt Henry straight over his head in what was the first commanding shot of the day in the fifth over. But West Indies soon lost John Campbell, whose difficult innings was ended by Jamieson. He got a length ball to move away from off stump, and Campbell, looking to flay him across the line, only managed a thick leading edge that nestled into deep third’s hands.West Indies, having managed just 18 runs in the reduced powerplay of seven overs, targeted Blair Tickner, brought into the side in place of Jacob Duffy. Auguste first clubbed him over his head before Keacy Carty sliced him over point for four more.Carty’s innings was, however, short-lived as he fell soon to Jamieson, whose opening spell read 5-2-12-2. West Indies continued to go after Tickner as Hope got into his groove. He first hooked Tickner to the vacant deep midwicket fence, and then laced him through covers to bring up 6000 ODI runs. Among his compatriots, only Viv Richards has got to this mark quicker, by one innings (141 vs 142).Nathan Smith made an impact with the ball•Getty Images

West Indies lost Auguste soon, with his attempted pull spooning straight up for Jamieson to take a catch running back from midwicket. That didn’t impact Hope and the incoming Sherfane Rutherford, who refused to curb their aggressive instincts. Hope pulled Santner deep over midwicket, while Rutherford thumped Nathan Smith twice into the stands to get West Indies moving again. However, two quick wickets got New Zealand back into the game. Santner first got rid of Rutherford while Smith breached Chase’s defences with a peach of an indipper that decked back to castle his off stump. While Greaves also fell relatively early, Hope continued on his merry way.He reached his fifty off 42 balls, and just went up a gear. At 130 for 6 after 24 overs, Hope took charge and belted the bowlers all across McLean Park. He got decent support first from Shepherd, who pumped Henry for two sixes in three balls, and then dumped Tickner over deep midwicket.Once Shepherd fell, Forde took Jamieson to the cleaners, thrashing him for three fours and a six. Hope moved through his 90s in a flash, crashing Henry for back-to-back fours before reaching his first ODI century against New Zealand with the straightest of straight hits in the final over of the innings. Arms aloft, he soaked in the applause, finishing with 13 fours and four sixes. But it wasn’t enough.
